2010 Emmys: Who Should Win & Who Will Win

8/28/2010 1:00pm EDT
2010 Emmys
It’s a transitional year for the Emmys, meaning this is one of the more exciting races in recent memories. The flood of new nominees (brought on by a stellar development slate) means that we can no longer rely on the predictable Emmy voting to determine winners. Instead, this is a year where we can see many newcomers emerging and starting a whole new slate of predictable nominees.

Yes, that was a little cynical, but it’s the sad truth of the Emmys – habits are hard to break for the voters. Luckily, this year the virgin nominees have afforded them an extensive choice for brand new habits.

7/16/2010 2:28pm EDT

Kyra Sedgwick made an alarming first impression on Tom Cruise - the actress prompted police to interrupt a star-studded dinner at his home when she accidentally pressed the star's secret panic button.

The Closer star was invited to a small gathering at the movie star's Beverly Hills mansion, and decided to take a wander around the home after dinner. However, her snooping fun came to an end when she made the embarrassing mistake of pressing a random button she found in one room, because she was so curious about its purpose.

She explains, "I saw this little button and it wasn't attached t...

Spotlight On Michael C. Hall

9/4/2009 1:42pm EDT
Michael C. Hall
Michael C. Hall stars as Ken Castle in the eerie, action filled thriller Gamer, opening today. Michael takes us back to his southern roots playing a billionaire who creates the video game "Slayers" which allows players to use real prisoners as avatars to fight in a live combat game. Gamer, which also stars Gerard Butler, Amber Valletta, John Leguizamo and Kyra Sedgwick, is set in the future where video games and high tech entertainment have taken high priority in the world.

Michael C. Hall may be fairly new to the movie scene, but he is one of the most talented actors in the business. B...

Top 10 Acting Performances By Athletes

8/27/2009 10:35am EDT
Cam Neely as Seabass
A director getting the optimum performance out of an actor is not unlike a coach getting a great performance out of an athlete. One has to use the right guy in the right scene with expert timing. These are situations where one could film countless scenes of all different kinds, and getting laughs so big with these athletes would seem impossible - they're almost perfect. Remember, the fellas on this list appear here because they got the biggest laughs, not because they were the best actors or in the best movies. While Something About Mary is a funnier and better movie than many on this l...

Emmy Nomination Surprises, Snubs And Shouldn't Be Nominated

7/16/2009 3:17pm EDT
How I Met Your Mother
To paraphrase Ned Flanders, apparently an Emmy nomination is easier to get than an acceptance letter from Arizona State.

This morning, Emmy tried to one-up Oscar's new rule of ten by including six nominees in the acting categories and a whopping seven in the series categories. Yes, if you made a television series this year, or appeared on one, chances are you heard your name called in North Hollywood this morning.

With so many nominess, it seems impossible that any deserving performances or series were left out. Right? Sadly, no. And, of course, there are plenty of nominees who sh...

'The Closer' Recap: 'Half Load'

7/7/2009 10:15am EDT
The Closer
The Closer opens with Fritz and Brenda driving to give away Kitty's toys. Gabriel calls her with a new crime scene and Fritz drives her. The murder took place at a community center, and the first person to find the body is Father Jack. Reggie Gray, the victim, had no known enemies- according to the Father. Realizing that this would take awhile, Fritz leaves Brenda at the scene and goes off to take care of Kitty's worldly goods. Brenda and the team try to allow the Father to let them search Reggie's room. As the team disperses with assignments, Sanchez takes Brenda up to the top of a c...

'The Closer' Recap: 'Walking Back the Cat'

6/30/2009 4:46pm EDT
The Closer
For those sci-fi geeks out there, watch for David Hewlett in this episode! Now on with the show. The opening for this episode is strikingly without crime- Brenda is laying dinner out as Fritz walks in. Fritz walks in, unfortunately holding Kitty's ashes. Brenda, of course, breaks down with this dead body unlike her many others. They finally sit down to a now cold dinner, the credits still rolling, and Fritz slyly tries to get Brenda's help on a case. The music cues on this show are dead on and highlight the well timed cast. The next day, she is talking Pope into taking the case while ...

'The Closer' Recap: 'Red Tape'

6/23/2009 9:45am EDT
The Closer
Opens as every cop drama should- in a bar. Gabriel is meeting Taylor, having asked him for information on Irene. The subtlety of the personal threads throughout seasons is quite special in this show and it is well appreciated, as it is more realistic than purely episodic shows. Back to the bar, and their conversation is cut short with a shooting outside the bar. Gabriel runs out and shoots into the street, shooting a guy he thinks was firing shots at him. As the crime scene is established, Captain Raydor moves in with intent. Mary McDonnell, well known for her role as Laura Roslin on ...

'The Closer' Recap: 'Blood Money'

6/16/2009 9:45am EDT
The Closer
The Closer opens on a surveillance camera set in LAX. As the credits cut in, Chief Pope is briefing the crew on a case involving a real estate agent Mr. Summers, who is now missing. We find, via the wife's trip to the bank, that he is being held hostage and for a large ransom, over a million dollars and it led to the loan of Detective Mikki Mendoza to PHD; she does not make a great first impression on Brenda, as she mistakenly interrupts her. Also, Kitty, Brenda's cat, is joining the crew for the day (for those who missed the previous episode, Kitty is pretty much on her last leg). Mi...

Movie Remakes & Recastings We Hope To Never See

6/8/2009 9:40am EDT
Mary Poppins
In the wake of the current brain-draining drive to remake just about everything Hollywood has ever had to offer, there are some films that are so sacred they should never be touched. This is a blatant retort to the deluge of watered down franchises, remakes, medium changes, etc. It ranges in levels of snark from low to apocalyptic strength.

My frustration with this extremely long trend came to a fever pitch after watching the Obsessed trailer. Anyone even peripherally familiar with Fatal Attraction could easily catch the obvious, racially spurred recasting of a classic film.

TV's Most Kick-Ass Female Detectives

2/16/2009 9:00am EST
Cagney and Lacey
Once upon a television season, fans of police dramas and crime procedurals didn't think detectives could ever get more hard-boiled than Vic Mackey of "The Shield" or Andy Sipowicz of "NYPD Blue." Thankfully, we were wrong. Not only are there an increasing number of take-no-prisoners police detectives and home-sleuths on the case, but many of them are wearing skirts. From Poppy Montgomery, Marianne Jean-Baptiste and Roselyn Sanchez in "Without A Trace" to Kathryn Morris in "Cold Case," "Law and Order's" S. Epatha Merkerson and the women of the CSI franchise, powerful, well-written female pro...

Hollywood Stars: 'Please - Just Don't Vote'

10/1/2008 4:12pm EDT
Leonardo DiCaprio
NEW YORK (AP) - How do you get kids to vote? Just say no. Leonardo DiCaprio, Halle Berry, Jennifer Aniston, Tobey Maguire, Eva Longoria Parker and other stars are using reverse psychology to get young people into voting booths on Election Day.

In a new public service announcement that hit YouTube and other online outlets Wednesday, DiCaprio says: "Please - just don't vote." Others echo his plea: "Don't vote." But the stars soon twist the message: Voting is a civic duty and the only way to effect change.

"I mean, seriously, ... after this whole video - if you're not gonna vote, I d...

Who Will & Who Should Win An Emmy

9/18/2008 9:22am EDT
30 Rock
Ah, the Emmys, the most entertaining awards show and often the most frustrating. Why is it so frustrating? Because the voters get it wrong. They get the winners wrong more often than casual sports bettors. In fact, they get it so wrong that predicting the winners is often a fool's errand since it's impossible to determine what will strike the Academy's fancy as the reasons for their choices are as mystifying as the results.

Luckily, has one such fool. So it's time for a round of everybody's favorite game: Who Will Win and Who Should Win?
