Therese Ann Rutherford was born on Nov. 2, 1920 (some sources say 1917) in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada to John Rutherford, a former Metropolitan Opera singer, and Lillian Mansfield, a silent screen actress. Her family moved shortly after her birth to California, where the future star attended Fairfax High School. It was apparent even at an early age that the pretty young woman was destined for a creative career. Rutherford was a star debater at her school, played the piano, and dabbled in sculpting.
