Roz Russell went to Hollywood in the 1930's and stayed a major top of the marqee star until her death in the late 1970's. Versatile in Comedy and Drama, Roz Russell starred with the likes of Joan Crawford, Cary Grant, William Holden, Kim Novak, Alec Guiness, Natalie Wood, Sandra Dee, Norma Shearer, Paulette Goddard, Joan Fontaine,et al. Roz Russell's most famous role was the film version of her Broadway hit, "Auntie Mame" and while nominated for that film and others, Russell along with Stanwyck, Garbo, Cary Grant, Jean Arthur, is one of the stars who richly deserved Oscar's nod but never got it. Roz Russell was the odds on favorite to win for her dramatic role in "Mourning Becomes Electra" and in a suprise upset her close friend Loretta Young won. While many of her peers such as Joan Crawford and Bette Davis were starring in Horror Films to keep working , Roz Russell-as with Kate Hepburn -remained a major star: Top Billing, First Billing over the marquee. Roz Russell not Ethel Merman starred in the film version of "Gypsy" at WB. Ms Russell found box office hits in two comedies in the 1960's "Trouble With Angels and "Where Angels Go,Trouble Follows" playing a comedic Mother Superior. Her last film was "Mrs. Polifax-Spy" A devout Catholic she was active with her good friends Loretta Young and Jane Wyman in Catholic charities and causes.
