Five Must-See Shows Premiering This September

September 7th, 2011 10:00am EDT
ringer
1. Sept 13 - Ringer (CW, Tues 9/8c)
Reasons to get excited: Sarah Michelle Gellar (times two)

“The Ringer” is about twins. Bridget is a recovering alcoholic on the run from the mob after witnessing a murder. She takes refuge with her twin sister Siobhan, but when Siobhan goes missing and Bridget takes over her life, Bridget realizes that Siobhan’s world isn’t as picture-perfect as it seemed. It also stars Sarah Michelle Gellar (and Sarah Michelle Gellar); marking her first starring television role since “Buffy the Vampire Slayer.” Yeah. It’s monumental.

What intrigues me about this show i...

New Fall TV Series: Our Top 10 Picks

August 24th, 2011 12:00pm EDT
Pan Am
Every fall TV season has its share of surprise successes and bumbling disappointments. For every buzzed-about newbie (‘Desperate Housewives’) that turns into a hit, there’s an ‘Eastwick’ or ‘Running Wilde.’

But that’s part of the fun, right? Sometimes, you’ve got to take a chance on a show that could be the year’s new hit and Emmy winner.

There are a lot of prospects for this Fall, and some are more promising than others. Here, though, are the Top 10 we’re most looking forward to – keeping in mind we haven’t seen these ahead of time. These are in no particular order.

'Bridesmaids' Review: 'Two Jews On Film' Can't Stop Laughing From This Outrageously Funny Comedy (Video)

May 11th, 2011 2:00pm EDT
Bridesmaids
'Bridesmaids' is directed by Paul Feig and written by Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo. I have to say right off the bat... This is one of the funniest films I've seen since 'Hangover'.

From the opening scene, you know what kind of movie this is going to be. It's morning. Annie (Kristen Wiig) wakes up in bed next to Jon Hamm. His character doesn't even have a name. He's sleazy... He's rich and he drives a Porsche. Annie runs into the bathroom, puts on lipstick, fluffs her hair and gets back into bed. Jon wakes up, looks at Annie and very sweetly says...'I want you to leave but I don't ...

Trailer Preview: Three New Movies To Be Excited About

May 9th, 2011 3:42pm EDT
Bridesmaids
I confess that I am one of those people who have to see the previews when I go to the movies. Trailers, persuasively edited, teasers for upcoming films, are designed to seduce and entice with flashes of movies’ brilliance set to powerful scores. They are movies at their absolute best. While I am a sucker for them, I’m blessed with the gift of knowing if I’m going to love or hate a movie solely on those two-minute gems. Being a trailer whisperer won’t bring in the big bucks, but it helps me avoid paying for bad movies that will be on DVD in a couple months. Thanks to my skills, I didn’t...

Trailer Talk: This Week in Movies - 'Bridesmaids,' 'Priest' & More

May 9th, 2011 11:00am EDT
Bridesmaids
I apologize to all my faithful readers that there was no Trailer Talk column last week. Between my coverage of IFF Boston and a trip to Chicago, unfortunately it was just not in the cards. I did see some great flicks though at IFF Boston and met some interesting filmmakers. If you haven’t already checked out the coverage, definitely read my reviews and watch my interviews.

Of the movies that came out last week, I had already seen Jodie Foster’s third directorial effort “The Beaver,” starring Mel Gibson. In his role as the mentally ill Walter Black, Gibson puts forth a very raw perform...

Salma Hayek Defends Her Snake Panic

June 28th, 2010 11:00am EDT
Salma Hayek
Salma Hayek has defended her on-camera panic during a recent junket interview - explaining she has a morbid fear of snakes.

The actress and co-stars Maria Bello and Maya Rudolph were sitting lakeside for the Extra TV interview to promote new movie Grown Ups when a snake slithered onto the set and started hissing. Hayek and Bello leaped into Rudolph's lap and the Mexican actress was so shaken by the incident she refused to continue the chat.

She says, "The footage is on YouTube.com now... I have a phobia for snakes, but the worst part was... everybody ran and they left us alone. It was h...

Review: Adam Sandler's 'Grown Ups' Is Juvenile

June 24th, 2010 1:49pm EDT
Grown Ups
One of my greatest fears has been confirmed by seeing Adam Sandler’s “Grown Ups.” My favorite cast of “Saturday Night Live” from the 90s is starting to lapse into Eddie Murphy syndrome: they have no problem with making crappy family comedies just to cash paychecks.

Watching this poor excuse for something funny made me embarrassed for them. I expected a few lowbrow laughs from these folks who capitalized it after their stint on “SNL.” I hoped perhaps though that these seasoned comedians had something better up their sleeves.

“Grown Ups” stars Adam Sandler, Chris Rock, Rob Schneider, Kev...

Salma Hayek looked seductive in a busty white dress with red heels when she left her N.Y.C. hotel yesterday to attend the premiere of her film "Grown Ups."

In the film, five former basketball teammates gather 30 years after graduating from high school at the lake house where they celebrated their biggest victory to mourn the passing of their late coach.

Over the course of the Fourth of July weekend, the five friends realize that just because they've all grown up and started families doesn't mean that they've lost that old spark.

Salma Hayek Freaks Out Over Snake (Video)

Salma Hayek Snake Freak Out
Salma Hayek, Maya Rudolph, and Maria Bello were on Extra doing an interview for their new movie Grown Ups when a snake decided to crash the scene. Salma Hayek proceeded to freak out!

While her other co-stars weren't so fearful of the snake, Hayek was literally climbing all over Maya Rudolph to get away from the creature. As she stepped onto Maya's chair in stilettos, she screamed "Somebody do something! No!"

Hayek's over-the-top reaction comes to a surprise to anyone who has seen her in From Dusk Till Dawn, where she was featured in a scene as a stripper using a boa constrictor during her...

District 9
I finally saw the Sam Mendes dramedy "Away We Go" starring Maya Rudolph and John Krasinski. The film is thoroughly enjoyable with its highs and its lows sharing equal poignancy. It is the perfect hybrid of a drama and a comedy.

Music throughout the film is spot on, appropriate in each instance for the emotions the filmmakers are trying to convey. Rudolph and Krasinski have a wonderful chemistry as husband and wife and engage in hilarious interactions with the other couples in the movie. Krasinski plays the role of Burt with a dopey charm that's hard not to love.

I'm ashamed to say I still haven't gotten a chance to see "Terminator Salvation," but it's my top priority to see it this week. I also need to get out and see "Drag Me to Hell," because I continue to hear nothing but good things about it.

This week is a big week for comedies, with four premiering. We have "Land of the Lost," "Away We Go," "The Hangover," and "My Life in Ruins." I'm very excited because I will be seeing an advanced screening of "The Hangover." I have high hopes that it will be very funny, but I'll let you know what I think after I see it.

Starpulse's Explosive Summer Movie Preview

May 1st, 2009 10:06am EDT
Star Trek
Since the dawn of the American cinematic blockbuster in the late 1970s and early 1980s, moviegoers have eagerly waited for May - the unofficial beginning of summertime. This summer is no different. Films, and most popular media, are social mirrors, and this summer season supports that. The large box office contenders all deal with very similar themes: escapism and the support of the lone, outlaw hero figure (X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Star Trek, Terminator Salvation, Up, Transformers 2, Public Enemies, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra, Inglourious Basterds, et...

The quaint, colonial towns and Yale's impressive architecture led director Steven Spielberg to direct a portion of his highly anticipated "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" in New Haven. Director Sam Mendes admits that the state is a central character in his latest movie, "Revolutionary Road," starring Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio.

Sure, the New England state is beautiful in the fall with its crimson leaves, pumpkin patches, and white picket fences. It features beautifu...
