Naked Beneath My Clothes

Rating:

If you thought Ellen Degeneres was subtle, pop this is your CD player and fasten your seatbelts! From the same woman who brought you the HBO special entitled Born to Be Mild, Rita Rudner belts it out like, well, actually, she doesn't belt it out -- she whispers. She's the complete opposite of harsh. Noted for her pillow-talk voice that sounds like cross between a meditation mantra and a cricket, Rudner putters along -- she's almost lost you when, all of a sudden, she's got you again, just when you're least expecting it. She is like a librarian with perfect diction who tells dirty jokes. Not that she's dirty, mind you -- anything but -- it's just that most of her humor revolves around this sweet, non-assuming, mild-mannered persona claiming to interact with her environment in a way you're almost sure she wouldn't. In Naked Beneath My Clothes, she tells off automated answering-atrons (while dancing the rumba), cuts off ex-boyfriends without a second thought, and makes life a living hell for the tax man. Does she really? Presumably, this is why her stuff works. Her audience sees her and thinks, "But she's so sweet." She makes people feel okay about being ornary, thinking, "Even Rita Rudner gets annoyed at people who talk in movie theatres, so I must be okay!" Yes, Rita Rudner, mild-mannered people-hater, deserves as award for not swearing and still being hysterical; for making "nice" funny. There is no audience present for this book on tape, which was nominated for Best Comedy Album in 1993, so if your expecting something rowdy it'll be a bit like going to a classical concert and asking to be thrown in the mosh pit.
