Our Favorite TV Moms: A Mother's Day Special

May 6th, 2011 6:00pm EDT
Home Improvement
Let’s be honest: I doubt that any of the moms on this list are as awesome as your own mother (suffice it to say that none of them are as amazing as mine). But these women, these television moms, are certainly worthy of mention. You may have grown up with some of them or you may have watched them last week, but one thing’s for sure: they’re moms, and they’re pretty terrific. So, in honor of Mother’s Day (and in no particular order) I present our favorite TV moms.

1. Joyce Summers (Kristine Sutherland) - Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Was Joyce kind of clueless? At first, yeah, but her clueless na...

Here is my list of five influential African-American television characters.

1. Clair Huxtable - The Cosby Show (played by Phylicia Rashād)
I know. When someone says “The Cosby Show,” the first person you think of is Cliff Huxtable, rig...

Review: 'For Colored Girls' Would Have Been Better Suited For The Small Screen

November 3rd, 2010 10:00am EDT
Four Colored Girls
A good movie either needs the big screen, the big budget, or big stars to be worthy of an audience as large as Tyler Perry's. “For Colored Girls” would make a wonderful first season of a cable (or TBS) drama.

Tyler Perry's "For Colored Girls" is one of those movies that follows interconnecting stories of people going through struggles. The domestically abused, the sexually assaulted, accidentally impregnated, the barren, and hopelessly devoted. Think “Valentines Day” with rape.

The movie is not unlike that of a, or, well, six lifetime films in that it's about women who don't need men. Or ...

Perry has assembled an amazing cast of actresses, including Kimberly Elise, Thandie Newton, Phylicia Rashad, Loretta Devine, Whoopi Goldberg and Janet Jackson. What is it like to be a woman of color in...
