Don’t Move To New York City Based Solely On What You See On TV: A User’s Guide

July 28th, 2014 2:00pm EDT
Don’t Move To New York City Based Solely On What You See On TV:
As a born and bred New Yorker, I’m drawn to shows about my city, taking comfort in the familiar sights and settings; yet I often find myself asking, “Did the writers of some of these shows ever step foot in Manhattan?”

I can shake off the inconsistencies, but I sometimes wonder about all the people saving their babysitting and paper route money hoping to someday move to the Big Apple hoping to mirror the glamorous life seen on the small screen.

Hence, a guide to separating fact from fiction:

‘Smash’ only lasted two seasons, but it was long enough to get your hopes up that moving here wo...

Alison Pill And Jay Baruchel Call Off Engagement

Alison Pill Jay Baruchel
Tropic Thunder star Jay Baruchel and his actress fiancée Alison Pill have called off their engagement.

The Canadian couple was planning to wed last year, but Baruchel recently alerted fans to the fact that not only had the nuptials not taken place but he had been ditched.

In a now-deleted tweet, he wrote, "Alone again, naturally. Heartbroken," adding, "I won't be on twitter for awhile gang. Getting dumped rules."

In a recent interview with the Times Colonist, Baruchel explained why the wedding never happened: "Unfortunately, we're two busy people who are intrinsically lazy, so in our...

2012 Celebrity Sex Scandals & Nude Photo Leaks

December 25th, 2012 8:00am EST
Kanye West & Kim Kardashian
Real life often mimics soap operas, and 2012 was no exception. Several celebrities were embroiled in sex scandals and nude photo leaks. As much as these stars try to keep some things to themselves, sometimes their private moments result in a media frenzy.

In September, a video featuring Kanye West getting down and dirty with a woman looking very similar to his girlfriend Kim Kardashian was being shopped around. RadarOnline reported that they viewed the 20-minute sex tape and posted a non-nude screen shot from it.  The video was allegedly made before the rapper started dating the reality st...

Oops! 'Newsroom' Star Alison Pill Accidentally Posts Nude Photo On Twitter

September 13th, 2012 10:43am EDT
Alison Pill Twitpic
The Newsroom star Alison Pill accidentally posted a topless photo of herself on twitter Wednesday, surprising her 14,000-strong fanbase with the revealing shot. The photo was intended for Alison's actor fiancee Jay Baruchel.

Alison, who plays associate producer Maggie on the hit HBO series, quickly deleted the image and apologized to her fans -- but the damage was done and the photo has made its way around the internet (obviously) .

"Yep. That picture happened," she tweeted. "Ugh. My tech issues have now reached new heights, apparently. How a deletion turned into a tweet... Apologies."

Brittany's Blog: Things 'The Newsroom' Taught Me

August 5th, 2012 12:00pm EDT
The Newsroom
This is my viewpoint, from the far end of the couch...and this week I want to discuss a little show called The Newsroom, and all the things I've learned from it. Not only is it one of the best shows you're not watching, it's a series that - love it or hate it - has almost become bigger than the show itself. There's enough to talk about that..well, it unintentionally took over this entire blog. So, in no particular order, here are seven things that I've taken away from The Newsroom.

1. The TV Main Title Sequence Is Not Dead

The television main title sequence seems to be on its way to bei...

Reading 'The Newsroom': 'I'll Try To Fix You'

July 15th, 2012 11:00pm EDT
The Newsroom
The fourth episode of The Newsroom takes on a story that captivated the nation, while everyone's love lives get needlessly meddled in, and Don finally stops being a jerk. While the show struggles with its subplots, there's no denying that it knows how to do the news, even if it's news from two years ago.

The Top Story

While The Newsroom has been grounded in real-life personalities and events from the start, "I'll Try To Fix You" is the first episode where it tackles head-on a real news story that we also all know well: the shooting of Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords. While the BP oil s...

Reading 'The Newsroom': 'The 112th Congress'

July 8th, 2012 11:00pm EDT
The Newsroom
In the third episode of HBO's The Newsroom, Will picks a fight with the Tea Party, Charlie gets called to the principal's office, and Aaron Sorkin revisits the second episode of Sports Night. It's messy and more than a little familiar, but it's still an impressive addition to the summer TV landscape.

The Top Story

"The 112th Congress" opens with something that should be very familiar to fans of Sorkin's previous show about a TV show: an on-air apology. Will opens News Night with an editorial comment about how sorry he is for the program's past mistakes and flaws. "I'm a leader in an ind...

Aaron Sorkin Strikes Again With 'The Newsroom'

June 24th, 2012 10:00am EDT
The Newsroom
The Newsroom is pure Aaron Sorkin. The fingerprints of his creative vision are obvious and numerous throughout HBO's newest original series. And damned if that isn't a sight to behold.

Sorkin has a unique and very specific voice, one that television has missed. This isn't to detract from his successes with Moneyball and The Social Network, or at the beginning of his career with The American President and A Few Good Men. But Sorkin on the small screen is something different. Sports Night, The West Wing and even the lesser-regarded Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip gave us the chance to savor ...

Review: 'Midnight In Paris' 'Two Jews On Film' Only One Feels The Magic In This Fantasy Comedy (Video)

May 18th, 2011 2:17pm EDT
Midnight In Paris
I know critics are supposed to be objective (if that's even possible) but in the case of Woody Allen's new film, 'Midnight In Paris' it's going to be really hard. I thought it was one of the most beautiful, original, magical and romantic films I've seen in a very long time. It completely grabbed my heart.

The film opens with images of Paris...beautiful, moving images. The lights of the city, the empty streets, the gardens, museums, cafes, flea markets, parks and cathedrals. The montage goes on for quite a while...No actors...just visuals of this magnificent city....

And then we meet ...

Jay Baruchel
Canadian actor Jay Baruchel is engaged to wed his girlfriend Alison Pill.

The Tropic Thunder star proposed to Pill over the Christmas holidays, but admits he was wracked with nerves when he presented the actress with a 180-year-old Victorian ring.

He tells ET Canada, "When I gave it to her, I just said, basically, 'S**t or get off the pot.' I said, 'F**k it, will you marry me?'"

Baruchel met Pill, who's starred in Milk and Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, while filming upcoming hockey film Goon.

The couple plan to tie the knot in September 2012.

Who Is This Famous Mystery Actress?

May 18th, 2010 3:18pm EDT
Mystery Actress
Some actors certainly know how to transform themselves to get into character. Who the heck is this bedraggled looking star? Hint: she's a rather famous cable TV actress who is appearing in the Broadway show "This Wide Night."

The theater production centers on two formerly close prison cell mates. The friendship of street-wise Marie (Alison Pill) and her older, nurturing friend Lorraine (played by our Mystery Actress) is tested when the women reunite after Lorraine gets out of prison and pays Marie a visit.

It's Edie Falco!

Yup, the actress with the wet pants is Edie Falco! Her ...
