"Modern Family" star Elizabeth Pena died from alcohol abuse. The actress, 55, suffered from cirrhosis to the liver, according to TMZ.com. The newly released death certificate also suggests Pena suffered from acute gastrointestinal bleeding hours before her death.

The actress passed away at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles last week.

Pena played Sofia Vergara's mother Pilar in the ABC sitcom "Modern Family." She got her first big break in 1986's "Down & Out In Beverly Hills" as housekeeper Carmen, and followed that with roles in "La Bamba" (1987), "*batteries not included" (1987)...

Prolific character actress Elizabeth Pena, who played Sofia Vergara's mother Pilar in a recurring role on hit comedy "Modern Family" has died.

Pena, the daughter of Cuban immigrants, died on Tuesday at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. The cause has not yet been revealed. She was 55.

Her death was confirmed by her nephew Mario-Francisco Robles in a heartfelt obituary he penned for website Latino Review.
