Birth Name: Sophie Nelisse

A startlingly gifted young actress, Sophie Nélisse maintained a down-to-earth attitude about her career even as she experienced unprecedented success. At age seven, Sophie Nélisse began her showbiz work in commercials. Although she made guest appearances as a friend of the family in the drama "Les Parent" (Radio-Canada, 2008), Nélisse dazzled international audiences at age 10 when she filmed the role of Alice L'Écuyer, a member of an elementary school class reeling from the emotional damage inflicted when their beloved teacher kills herself, leaving replacement educator "Monsieur Lazhar" (2011) to step in and attempt to help them heal. Showered with critical praise and nominated for a Best Foreign Film Oscar, "Monsieur Lazhar" showcased the efforts of the titular teacher (Mohamed Fellag), an Algerian immigrant to Montréal brave enough to overcome his own demons so that he can help his students comprehend and survive this tragedy. Revealing depths of emotion and nuance far beyond her years, Nélisse wowed critics and audiences alike as the sensitive, laconic Alice. She made global headlines when, at 11 years old, she won the Best Supporting Actress Genie and Jutra Awards for her work.
