Jeanette MacDonald & Nelson EddySweethearts [RCA] Release Date: 2004 Label: RCA Victor Rating: ![]() |
Although they are closely associated with each other and co-starred in eight films, Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy made few studio recordings together -- a couple of sessions in 1936 and a final one, mostly re-recording the same songs, in 1957. In part, this was because, while MacDonald was contracted to RCA Victor Records throughout her career, Eddy recorded for different labels and was not always available. This budget compilation, like most of the albums co-credited to the two, combines duets and solo performances. All four of the couple's 1957 tracks are here -- "Indian Love Call" from +Rose Marie, "Ah! Sweet Mystery of Life" from +Naughty Marietta, "Will You Remember?" from +Maytime, and "Wanting You" from +New Moon. In addition, Eddy sings "Rose Marie," "I'm Falling in Love With Someone," and "Tramp, Tramp, Tramp," the last two from +Naughty Marietta, while MacDonald takes solos on "Italian Street Song" from +Naughty Marietta, "Sweetheart Waltz" from +Sweethearts, and "Vilia" from +The Merry Widow (the last a film in which Eddy did not appear). As studio recordings, many of them from the 1950s, issued by the legitimate label that owns the copyrights (not always the case with these two, by any means), these tracks are in good fidelity, and as a budget release the album is inexpensive.
