Jeanette MacDonald & Nelson EddyFavorites in Hi-Fi Label: RCA Records Rating: ![]() |
Some of Jeanette MacDonald's and Nelson Eddy's classic movies had already been remade in widescreen by the '50s -- but the originals retained their luster, as did the duo's reputation. And so in 1957 and 1958, under conductors Lehman Engel and David Rose, MacDonald and Eddy went into the studio to re-record their most popular work in hi-fi and stereo. The results are impressive, even though both singers' voices had darkened somewhat since their heyday of the '30s -- the dimensionality of stereo separation is not pushed artificially, but the division of the voices and the perspective of the orchestral accompaniments does allow for some superb listening moments, particularly on "Italian Street Song" on side one. Oddly enough, this album exists under two titles -- in the mono version, it is Favorites in Hi-Fi, whereas the stereo version is, of course, Favorites in Stereo. Bruce Eder, All Music Guide
