Clark Gable was deemed King of the Movies, few know it but Myrna Loy his grand colleague at MGM was for a time called The Queen of the Movies. MGM had a stellar roster of legends under contract such as Clark Gable, Greta Garbo, Marie Dressler, Norma Shearer, Jean Harlow, Spencer Tracy, Joan Crawford, James Stewart, and Miss Loy. What a studio MGM must have been! Ms Loy made a series of films with William Powell and rarely has a screen team seemed so perfect together. In the The Thin Man series Loy and Powell were peerless in performance. One of Ms Loy's greatest hits was William Wyler's masterpiece "The Best Years of Our Lives" and while the film was about returning Veterans of WWII it was MsLoy top billed over the fine Frederic March, Dana Andrews and a superlative supporting cast. Produced by Sam Goldwyn this film is justly considered a classic of the silver screen. Ms Loy segued from great stardom to being a co star to many of the stars of the 1960's such as Doris Day, Paul Newman, Joanne Woodward. Ms Loy late in her life came to the defense of two of her famed MGM colleagues Crawford and Harlow whom she felt were slandered by books unfair to these Stars. In particular she took off after Christina Crawford for the book on Ms. Crawford "Mommie Dearest" Ms Loy was awarded an Honorary Oscar for her years of impeccble Acting. Few have deserved it more Ms Loy is fondly remembered as a fine actress and true star.. Loy's Autobio is "Being and Becoming" | ||
