Tim Burton And Johnny Depp's 'Dark Shadows' Past

May 9th, 2012 8:20pm EDT
Dark Shadows
Are you familiar with the story of Dark Shadows? It was originally a late afternoon supernatural soap opera that ran on the ABC TV network from 1966 to 1971. Some 1,225 episodes were shot during Dark Shadows run and if you were a teenager during that time, you probably rushed home each day after school to catch it.

Directed by Tim Burton and starring Johnny Depp, the 2012 reboot of the cult classic seemed to be a dream job for both Burton and Depp. Tim Burton has publically stated that he was a big fan of the TV series and as a child Deep was obsessed with the show and main character Barna...

31 Days of Horror - Week 2: 'Paranormal Activity,' 'Drag Me To Hell,' More

October 16th, 2009 11:49am EDT
Paranormal Activity
With the Halloween season in full swing, Starpulse contributing writer Kris King is watching a horror movie that has passed him by for every day in October. This week, Kris experiences

Paranormal Activity, gets dragged to Hell, and watches Bill Paxton kill people with an axe.

October 8 - Paranormal Activity (2009)

Horror movies don't really scare me. They can be tense or gross, funny or creepy, but it's rare when I lose much sleep over them. Paranormal Activity is different. Paranormal Activity is scary. Even if you don't believe in the supernatural, the film's brutally slow accumulati...

This Week's Movie Buzz: See It, Rent It, Or Skip It?

May 26th, 2009 8:57am EDT
Up
This week is probably the least exciting of the summer movie season so far because we don't have an epic blockbuster premiering. There are three movies coming out, two of which are mainstream releases. Pixar fans will be happy to see the group's latest animated feature, and Sam Raimi aficionados will get their fix with something that thankfully isn't another "Spider-Man" movie.

While I tend to like Pixar's movies, I never generally get super excited about seeing them in the movie theater. Aside from "Wall-E" and "Toy Story," which I saw in theaters, I've enjoyed their other films ...

Starpulse's Explosive Summer Movie Preview

May 1st, 2009 10:06am EDT
Star Trek
Since the dawn of the American cinematic blockbuster in the late 1970s and early 1980s, moviegoers have eagerly waited for May - the unofficial beginning of summertime. This summer is no different. Films, and most popular media, are social mirrors, and this summer season supports that. The large box office contenders all deal with very similar themes: escapism and the support of the lone, outlaw hero figure (X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Star Trek, Terminator Salvation, Up, Transformers 2, Public Enemies, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra, Inglourious Basterds, et...

Ellen Page's 'Smart People' Only as Scholarly as Zealous Senior in High School

April 11th, 2008 9:55am EDT
Smart People
(HollywoodChicago.com) – I’m flummoxed. I know “Smart People” was supposed to be comedic drama with a splash of romance. Instead, I have been misled. It’s not a comedy. It’s not a tragedy. It’s not even a tragicomedy.

“Smart People” is a blandly scripted “poor me” with an attempt at a plot and some glitzy Hollywood names thrown in for good box-office measure.

While I know this was no “Juno,” I couldn’t help cursing first-time writer Mark Poirier for not taking a much-needed page – or a full-fledged course of mentoring – from Oscar-winning “Juno” inker Diablo Cody.

“Smart Peo...

Aaron Zigman's Score For "Flicka" Is A Wild Ride

October 6th, 2006 3:22pm EDT
Flicka
Film composer Aaron Zigman scores 20th Century Fox's remake of the 1943 family western "My Friend Flicka." The modern version, with its title shortened to "Flicka," stars Alison Lohman and country music superstar Tim McGraw as daughter and father. When the father (McGraw) decides that Katie (Lohman) should attend college in place of running the family ranch, she decides to tame a wild mustang in order to sway his opinion. Zigman's score is rousing and propulsive, reminiscent of the dynamic scores of golden-era westerns such as "The Magnificent Seven." Directed by Michael Mayer ("A Home at t...
