Forgotten Friday Flick- 'Miami Blues'

March 30th, 2012 12:22pm EDT
Miami blues photo
I’m feeling a bit angry this week that there’s a sequel to a flick that I utterly detested. (See the remake of "Clash of the Titans" and it’s now needless sequel "Wrath of the Titans!") So I’m going with an outing about bitter angry man fresh from prison looking to wreak a little havoc – welcome to Forgotten Friday Flick! The pick of choice this week is from the brilliant mind of underappreciated writer/director George Armitage. A funny, nasty and all around engaging little nugget complete with vicious violence, dead Hare Krishnas and home cooked pork chops. We’re talking about the unf...

Our Favorite High School Movies

September 18th, 2008 10:00am EDT
The Breakfast Club
Perhaps you've heard about "Assassination of a High School President," the Bruce Willis/Mischa Barton movie that darkly satirizes high school politics. While much of the high school set is eagerly anticipating the film's theatrical release in early 2009, early reviews from its January screening at Sundance have been mixed. MTV has praised it as a cross between "Rushmore" and "The Usual Suspects," while Variety labeled it an "uninventive," "muddled parody." Only time will tell if the movie becomes an instant classic or ends up in the bargain DVD bin next to "Encino Man."

There has been...

Coen Brothers Spotlight: From Their Beginnings To 'Burn After Reading'

September 12th, 2008 11:37am EDT
Coen brothers
Many things come to mind when thinking about the films of Joel and Ethan Coen. Dark witty humor, highly stylized production and costume designs, reoccurring actors, clever and often poetic dialogue, and above all some of the best character names in celluloid history.

Just look back at some of the brothers' most memorable characters: The Snoat brothers in Raising Arizona, Bernie Bernbaum and Eddie Dane in Miller's Crossing, Lou Breeze in Barton Fink, Norville Barnes in The Hudsucker Proxy, the Swedish-Americans Marge Gunderson and Jerome Lundegaard in Fargo, Jackie Treehorn and Jesus Q...

Baby Mama
More than a decade after high-powered corporate, suit-wearing J.C. Wiatt inherited a baby that changed her life in Baby Boom - and in many ways how people viewed single, career-driven mothers - the story has been redone.

Margot At The Wedding
Written and directed by Noah Baumbach, Margot At The Wedding is a follow-up to his Academy Award nominated “The Squid and the Whale,” and is a daringly funny and bracingly honest exploration of the tender, absurd and sometimes excruciating relationship between siblings and the fallout for those in their wake: children, husbands, lovers.
