'Heroes' Flashes Back

April 14th, 2009 1:11pm EDT
Heroes
After last week's exciting episode we join our Heroes digging in the dirt. They're unearthing the remains of people killed in Coyote Sands decades ago. Peter questions what they're doing in the middle of the desert digging up graves. Nathan says when Mom has a dream they should listen. Claire tells Peter to give Nathan a chance, "he's carrying enough guilt for all of us." Peter says, "He's charmed you too. Don't worry it happens to all of us." Then he asks Angela for answers about the aunt he never knew about.

The show flashes back in black and white to 1961. Angela, her sister Alice a...

10 Ways 'Heroes' Could Be Improved

April 6th, 2009 2:30pm EDT
Heroes
After a much-praised first season, NBC's Heroes took a tumble, then a dive, and though producers desperately tried to resuscitate the show, there didn't seem to be any signs of life. "Volume Four: Fugitives" showed some promise, but the stranglehold on "Heroes" is strong, prompting many fans to believe that it's too late to save it. Instead of sitting around and moping, here are 10 suggestions to get the drama off life support and breathing on its own:

1. Kill Nathan Petrelli. The flying Judas has had too many reprieves already, what with miraculously surviving two bullets to the che...

Nathan says he will make some calls and put some things in action in order to make everything right again. Claire says she's going to walk around for a while. Nathan acts like a worried Father. She says she'll be fine and leaves him alone with his thoughts in a dirty hotel room. Peter saved Angela and took her to a church. He's looking for answers, so is Angela.

'Heroes' Gets Good Again

March 24th, 2009 4:43pm EDT
Heroes
This week starts off with a shock. In a series of interesting close-ups, jump cuts and repeat edits Danko puts on shaving cream, places a straight razor into a guard and begins shaving his face. His alarm goes off telling him his front door is open. He wipes off the shaving cream, you'd think he's just leave it on, gets his gun out, which he always wears in it's holster, and makes his way to the front door. He closes the door and back tracks into his living room where he finds the Puppeteer gift-wrapped with a red bow and hanging from his ceiling in a makeshift theater stage complete with c...

Last week on Heroes we left Claire in the kitchen with the Puppeteer, Doyle. This week he begs for her help. Rebel sent a fake call to the agents outside so Claire and Sandra can't call for help. Doyle wants to know why they aren't kicking down the door and nabbing "comes back to life Barbie." She tells him she has a free pass. He uses his powers to freeze them and tells them that the agency burned down his theater with him still in it and that she doesn't know what it's like to be hunted. 'Heroes' Plods Along

This week's episode of Heroes takes us back before last week's episode in order to catch us up on things we already know. Parkman, Suresh and Peter talk at a motel before going over to drug HRG. Suresh thinks it's dangerous to be out in the open. Parkman reminds the men that they did nothing wrong and they were captured anyway. Then we're back in the bar with HRG as he is drugged and passes out. Parkman, Suresh and Peter pick him up off the floor and take him away.

While HRG is drugged Parkman goes into his mind and fishes around for answers. We're transported to five weeks earlier to ...

'Heroes' Recap: Building 26

Claire is stuck back at home with her "happy" family. She and HRG are lying to Claire's Mom about going on an Ivy League college tour instead of telling her they were a part of covert government plot to take down people with special abilities. Claire leaves the breakfast table and runs off to her room to have a tantrum. HRG follows and chastises her. Claire says, "And now's the part where you tell me everything you do you do to protect me." Instead HRG tells her she's going to go to community college or there's going to be hell to pay. So basically Claire is in a prison of her own making. E...

'Heroes' Crashes and Burns

February 3rd, 2009 2:02pm EST
Heroes
Paul Greengrass must have designed the sloppy first episode of the new "Heroes" Chapter because they borrowed the cinematography from "The Bourne Ultimatum" and they really should give it back. NBC is apparently hurting for money and it looks as if they cut the budget for this floundering show. In response the writers decided to cut as much dialog and character development as possible and insert clichéd action sequences in which the heroes are captured by HRG backed by Nathan Petrelli. To further stretch the dwindling funds they also shot everything through a pinhole camera and succeeded in...

Latest 'Heroes' Ep Has Bad Writing, Predictable Plot Points

November 18th, 2008 12:52pm EST
Heroes
So this pretentious episode of Heroes begins with a narration about the meaning of an eclipse being unknowable and divine yet somehow we all know that in the next episode it will all be magically revealed, oh yeah, because they've been advertising this whole thing since last week.

Arthur Petrelli stands in front of Hiro, his hands over Hiro's ears, squeezing Hiro's head, Hiro screams and screams and screams some more. Arthur says, "You had one job to do…never send a boy to do a man's job." What a load of bad writing. This obscure reference only makes sense when the camera drops back t...

'Heroes' Becomes 'Villains' For A Night

November 11th, 2008 9:05am EST
Heroes
Apparently we all took the same sleeping pill, and while we were knocked out we had the same nightmare: that "Heroes" was going nowhere very fast, introducing new characters who we didn't care about because we knew nothing about them and creating plot scenarios which felt forced and clichéd.

Last night we all woke up. We had the chance to start the season over and watch the premiere of a new series called "Villains." It was much better than its "Heroes" counterpart. It had characters we knew and cared about, and it revealed back stories in an interesting and thought provoking way. It ...

Confusion Reigns On 'Heroes'

'Heroes' Seems Forced, Cliched & Tired

September 30th, 2008 10:00am EDT
Heroes
NBC might want to consider renaming their show, "The Sylar Show," instead of "Heroes." It was stated that this season would be all about the villains and audiences can't seem to get enough of Sylar, but at what point is it overkill (pun intended)?

Turns out that Angela Petrelli really is Sylar's mother, and she's nursing him back to health in order to help collect all the villains he allowed to escape. Like all the clichéd moms of villains before her, she feels her son in misunderstood and just needs guidance in order to become the best little guy he possibly can be. She regrets givin...

Our Favorite TV Ensembles

June 12th, 2008 9:00am EDT
Lost
An ensemble cast is a group of actors in which each character/actor is assigned an equal level of importance to the story. Sometimes even if there is an established "main character," a show can be considered an ensemble because individuals are treated with the same care and development as everyone else on the show.

This sort of cast style gives the audience a chance to connect with several different characters rather than just one; if a viewer does not like one of the characters or cannot relate to them, there will be several more to choose from. It creates very broad storylines and v...

Is 'Heroes' In Peril? Starpulse Weighs In

November 14th, 2007 10:04am EST
Heroes
If one person says it, it's a rumor. If two people say it, it's gospel. But what if a chunk of the viewing audience is not only saying it, but also tuning out? That's the problem facing Heroes this season as it slips in the ratings and in the eyes of television critics. Complaints of slow pacing, too many new characters and not enough action have plagued the series this season, which has been suffering from sluggish momentum and redundant storytelling.

When the season began, viewers were faced with unanswerable questions: Why is Nathan's face burned up in the mirror? What happened to M...
