'The Office' Recap: 'The Fundraiser'

April 29th, 2012 4:02pm EDT
The Office
Public functions don’t seem to go well with ‘The Office’ folk. Numerous embarrassing situations typically emerge, and ‘The Fundraiser’ is no exception.

Robert California announces that he’s bought two tables at a fundraiser for an animal welfare society, an event hosted by Angela’s (state) senator husband. Let’s see, where should we start with all the awkwardness?

Andy shows up uninvited. He ends up heckling Robert and announces his exciting plans for the rock opera he’s been writing in his spare time. In an effort to show everyone that he’s okay after being fired, he aims to impress. He ...

'The Office' Recap: 'Welcome Party'

April 15th, 2012 10:13am EDT
Ellie Kemper
With Andy and Erin on their way back from Florida, the rest of the crew (including Robert) awaits new boss Nellie’s arrival. It seems she slept in, hitting the snooze button nine times, and seems overwhelmed with moving all of her stuff into her apartment “in the suburb of a suburb.” Robert quickly assigns Jim and Dwight to help her unpack, while the rest of the staff is tasked with throwing Nellie a welcome party. Oh joy.

Meanwhile, back on the road, Andy and Erin are rehearsing how Andy should break up with Jessica. He knows Jessica is at her family’s cabin so decides to stop and do it t...

'The Office' Recap: 'Special Project'

Ellie Kemper
When you get Dwight involved in a “special project,” you know strange things will happen. When Andy announces Dwight’s “promotion” to lead a three-week project down in Florida, he probably doesn’t know what he’s in for. And neither does anyone else in the office.

Dwight’s initial plan, which includes taking Darryl and Phyllis, among others, is botched for many reasons. Andy doesn’t agree with his choices, and Jim’s got a problem of his own – he gets a text from Robert California telling him to bring his clubs to Florida. Uh oh.

Pam’s return to the office mainly revolves around coaching ...

'The Office' Recap: 'Jury Duty'

I wouldn’t necessarily expect an episode of anything entitled “Jury Duty” to be hilarious. And I’d be right.

This wasn’t the worst episode of ‘The Office’ ever, but it certainly wasn’t anywhere near the top. It was, for the most part, boring. And while there were awkward parts, it was just painful and not very funny. What happened to this show being painfully funny?

Here’s the gist of the main plot: Jim was called for jury duty and ended up being released at noon on his first day. He decided to take the rest of the day off, and the next morning Pam needed help with the kids… and then he...

The young ladies ruled the red carpet at Wednesday night's People Choice Awards. Demi Lovato showed off two ensembles - one red and one pink - while Miley Cyrus opted for a more subdued white dress that showed off a little bit of cleavage.

Vanessa Hudgens went for a vampy look in a black and gold spider-web inspired gown, and Julianne Hough showed off her sexy side in a backless beaded little number.

Ashley Greene mixed leather and lace while Nina Dobrev brought a bit of color to the red carpet in a green gown.

'The Office' Recap: 'Spooked'

October 30th, 2011 6:02pm EDT
The Office
Cool costumes are a dime a dozen on Halloween episodes of ‘The Office.’ This year, they are censored by Andy, and as a result it isn’t so exciting. (Perhaps with the exception of Dwight and his sci fi boobs.) The real meat of this installment surrounds Erin and Andy’s awkward relationship.

First off, Erin is put in charge of decorating the office for Halloween. But the posters are tamer than a preschool party, as Robert California points out. Andy is apparently hot and cold with Erin, and she’s none too pleased when he asks Angela and Phyllis to assist her to make the office a little more ...

'The Office' Recap: 'The Incentive'

To all of us who thought Andy Bernard would not last another week as the Office boss, we have been proven wrong. Andy, in his own way, redeems himself a little bit in this week’s episode. Maybe this arrangement will actually last a while.

It all starts when Robert gives an inspirational speech about upping everyone’s numbers, after which Andy promises to double sales growth. Everyone seems keen on the idea until it comes time to do it. “What do you expect me to do, hit a magic button?” Phyllis asks. Clearly, Andy is not so inspirational.

But that doesn’t matter. When he presents the ...

James Spader
After a summer off and the news that James Spader would join the cast of ‘The Office,’ there wasn’t a whole lotta suspense about what would happen. But kudos to the writers for not being completely predictable.

Yes, Spader’s Robert California is the new boss, but he’s not the new Office boss. Exactly. After being hired to replace Jo, he took one look at the lame antics and walked out. He somehow convinced Jo to give him her job as CEO. (Perhaps that has to do with Kathy Bates being busy with ‘Harry’s Law.’ Just sayin’.)

So, while California is a looming presence by occupying the con...

Well, there you have it. The new boss on ‘The Office’ is…. Just kidding. No idea.

I didn’t expect we’d find out, and I guess I was right. Still, it can be a little maddening to have such a hyped finale with no payoff. Although, the guest stars sure were interesting.

After Dwight’s disastrous stint as acting manager, and Creed’s delusional antics, it’s clear to Jo a search committee must be formed to find the right boss. More on that in a minute.

But first, Creed. Oh man, does he live up to his title of Creepy Old Man. He has an imaginary valet, calls meetings to an empty room with ...

'The Office' Recap: 'The Inner Circle'

May 7th, 2011 7:56am EDT
The Office
‘The Inner Circle’ was the first episode without Michael. I don’t know about you, but I felt that loss. More on that later.

The episode centers around Deangelo’s Man's Club (or so it could be called) in which he acts like a dopey, chauvinistic weirdo and all the other guys suck up. People like Kevin are thrilled to be in it, while Dwight insults Deangelo’s every move.

Jim gets himself in an awkward spot when he points out Deangelo appears sexist to some people in the office. As if to prove a point, Deangelo hires a young, female administrative assistant. (Is it just me, or does she l...

'The Office' Recap: 'Garage Sale'

March 25th, 2011 6:49pm EDT
The Office
Even though the episode centers around a garage sale, this is probably the most plot significant – and emotionally satisfying – episode of ‘The Office’ in years. A lot happens amidst the selling of cheap things in the warehouse. That’s what she said.

Let’s start with the garage sale stuff: obviously, it’s not the series’ most exciting venture, but it has amusing points: Kevin, Andy and Darryl playing the Dallas board game; Angela selling cat figurines; Ryan appropriating pictures of Office staffers for his mother’s homemade canned goods; Michael’s refusal to sell much of anything; Oscar’...

'The Office' Recap: 'Todd Packer'

February 26th, 2011 2:18pm EST

Todd Packer is possibly one of the most inappropriate characters on TV, and he’s played to perfection by David Koechner. No one in the office – except maybe a young Michael Scott – could get away with dry humping employees or making fat jokes.

When Packer decides to stop traveling and settle down, Michael convinces Holly that Packer would be a perfect addition to the team. She takes Michael at his word, not realizing just how crude the guy is. (She soon realizes it when he refers to his own daughter as a bitch.)

Everyone else in the office, meanwhile, is horrified at Packer’s return. ...

PDA – do you love it or loathe it?

It seems relative to those in the situation. For anyone who’s been in a new romance, it’s great. For anyone who’s single, bitter, or even happily coupled, it can be disgusting. And Michael and Holly, cute though they are, have become that couple to some. They have become disgustingly cute.

Let’s start with the episode’s tag – Pam presents Darryl with a card in sympathy for the death of his almost-97-year-old grandmother. Unfortunately, that message is not properly communicated office-wide, and most write things like “Let’s get wasted!” in what they ...

'The Office' Recap: 'The Search'

Michael Scott
If I had to choose, I’d say this is one of ‘The Office’s' weakest episodes of the season – at least until the end, when Michael & Holly save the world again.

The opening is nothing to speak of – Kelly & Ryan highlighting their “divorce” after getting married the previous week when they were “wasted.” Ummm, okay. I’m sorry, but isn’t their storyline played to death? And isn’t it a little ridiculous that B.J. Novak is considered a series regular when he gets less screen time then Ellie Kemper or Zach Woods?

Back to the heart of the episode – Jim and Michael go on a sales trip together, b...

After the holiday break, everyone’s wondering whatever came of Holly’s ultimatum with A.J. Michael has a “happy box” and a “sad box” ready (thanks to Erin), both of which contain various items, from scotch to gummy bears. “Jan. 3, 2011,” Michael declares, “A day that will live in-famously.”

Holly waltzes into the office, probably aware of the pressure on her, with thick gloves to cover her ring finger. It is soon revealed, however, that she just didn’t think it was fair to give A.J. an ultimatum – so things are just status quo. Michael is deliriously happy until he realizes Holly and A...

Gabe (Zach Woods)
This was one of the weakest ‘Office’ episodes of the season. The plot dragged and the writing wasn’t that great. Still, a mediocre episode of ‘The Office’ is still quite entertaining.

The opening tag is kind of a throwaway, leading up to the joke: a few years ago, the IT guy made the default server password “big boobz.” Uh huh.

This episode centers around Ryan, which is perhaps why it seems weak. It seems Ryan has come up with WUPHF.com, a device that will allow you to send someone a message simultaneously by phone, cell phone, email, Facebook, Twitter and home screen. He nabs severa...

'The Office' Recap: 'Viewing Party'

Ellie Kemper as Erin
‘Viewing Party’ was perhaps the funniest episode of ‘The Office’ in a while – not necessarily because the plot was brilliant, but because there were so many good lines and performances. Clearly the writers know the actors' strengths, inside and out, at this point.

The opening tag – where everyone’s watching images of The Scranton Strangler chase on TV – was average. But once Erin and Gabe invited the whole crew over to Gabe’s place for a ‘Glee’ viewing party, the laughs really picked up.

Where to begin? Michael, surprisingly, is a self-declared Gleek: “ You know who my favorite charact...

“Christening” starts with Pam touting Sabre’s “Hygiene Day,” recommending the “vampire cough” despite Dwight’s question: “Do you have any idea how expensive wool is in Transylvania? ‘Cause of the euro.” Dwight’s adverse reaction to disinfection prompts office folk to sneeze in his face (and on his toast) which he admirably accepts to build up immunity.

The main story here is Jim and Pam’s christening of Cece at their church. Without their knowledge, Michael invites virtually everyone from the office. Angela refers to the baby as a “precious bundle of God’s best everything” but privatel...

Murder! Singing plumbers! Babysitters! Creed the theater critic! Unrequited romance! Sexual contracts! 'Law & Order'! What did this episode of 'The Office' not offer?

First off, let's just say this is the perfect showcase for Andy (Ed Helms). There's always something theatrical about him, and you've got to admit he's got decent singing pipes. Top that with an on-stage cell phone incident more awkward than Tom Cruise jumping on Oprah's couch, and we have liftoff.
