Alex Kingston Knocks Out Front Teeth After Walking Into A Lamppost

February 2nd, 2012 11:31am EST
Alex Kingston
Actress Alex Kingston smashed her two front teeth when she collapsed following a head injury.

The former E.R. star was taken to the hospital for emergency treatment to a horrifying wound after falling over and biting through her bottom lip.

She had collapsed after suffering a dizzy spell following an incident earlier in the day when she hit her head on a lamppost.

Kingston tells U.K. chat show host Graham Norton, "I was jetlagged, working with comedians and I walked into a lamppost. It was a comedy moment, but I was so embarrassed because I thought I would be the butt of their jokes s...

TV on DVD: 'Doctor Who' & 'The Game' Reviewed

December 8th, 2011 1:00pm EST
Doctor Who
This week in TV on DVD, we look at new seasons for two cult favorites: the BBC's Doctor Who: The Complete Sixth Series and CBS DVD's The Game: The Fourth Season.

Doctor Who: The Complete Sixth Series (BBC Home Entertainment)

The Show: Matt Smith's edition of Doctor Who has endeared itself to fans and critics alike. Smith's second full series in the TARDIS is full of energy - and incredibly complicated, as we learn the truth of River Song's (Alex Kingston) true identity and wonder about The Doctor's final fate.

When Who is good, it's really good. The opening two-parter ("The Impossi...

Movie Review: 'Like Crazy' Filled With Believable Characters, Humor And Sexiness

November 4th, 2011 4:20pm EDT
Like Crazy
How many of you have ever been in love? Raise your hands. Now, how many of you have been in long distance relationships?

Even if you have been in neither, ‘Like Crazy’ is likely to win you over. It is a love story at heart, but it is filled with believable characters, humor, sexiness, and a raw quality few romances portray on film. If you are expecting a Kate Hudson romantic comedy, buh-bye.

The story is simple. Anna, a young British woman, falls for Jacob, an American, while studying in L.A. They go out after she leaves a witty letter on his windshield, clumsily describing her admiration...

Doctor Who Season 6 Episode 8 – ‘Let’s Kill Hitler’

September 6th, 2011 6:55pm EDT
Doctor_Who
After a summer off, while the producers of Doctor Who apparently awaited the growing of corn, the Doctor has returned. And what a return it is! Finally, we learn how Melody Pond became River Song … and it’s a heck of a story!

“Let’s see, you’ve got a time machine, I’ve got a gun. What the hell, let’s kill Hitler.”

We begin with Rory and Amy barreling through a lush corn field, with Amy shouting coordinates. With a flourish, they pull into a clearing, and before you can say, “Doctor Who?” the blue box has appeared. A petulant Doctor demands to know why they have been signaling him with cro...

TV on DVD: 'Doctor Who: Series Six, Part 1'

July 30th, 2011 6:00pm EDT
Doctor Who
If you're still missing Doctor Who, and BBC Books' dozen recently-released novels aren't enough, BBC Home Entertainment has sent home Doctor Who: Series Six, Part 1 on Blu-Ray and DVD. Here's my review of the DVD version.

The Show

This is the second series of Doctor Who under the stewardship of Steven Moffat, and I have to say that I've enjoyed it. To be fair, I've liked Moffat's work since Coupling, but I don't see what's apparently got some Whovians up in arms about this series. That doesn't mean that they're wrong, but I didn't feel as major a sea change as others did when Moffat t...

Doctor Who ’A Good Man Goes To War’ Episode 7 Recap June 4

June 5th, 2011 10:41am EDT
Doctor Who
Mea Culpa. I honestly thought that I could get away without recapping Episodes 5 and 6 “The Rebel Flesh/The Almost People” while I wrestled with the larger philosophical implications of the ‘Gangers.’ I was terribly wrong. You do need to know a bit about the Gangers before we can go on.

In a nutshell, in the future, people are using bio-engineered, sentient duplicates, made from a compound called The Flesh. These duplicates, called ‘Gangers’ (as in doppelganger,) are exact clones of the original person, right down to having the same heart, soul and mind. These clones are used to go into d...

'Doctor Who' 6.01 'The Impossible Astronaut' Review

April 24th, 2011 4:58pm EDT
Doctor Who
It's not hard for me to see why Doctor Who has become such a beloved franchise. I think there's always going to be a place on TV for an epic, fun adventure series that can be watched with the whole family. There's no other show that has quite that combination of qualities.

After a cute but perhaps too cute opening, The Doctor gathers Amy, Rory and River Song (ER's Alex Kingston, who is starting to grow on me) in Southeastern Utah, plotting something involving space in 1969. (Yes, there really is a San Juan School District.) They're all there when he is shot and killed - before he ...

The (New) Doctor's Finest Hour

July 29th, 2010 12:34pm EDT
Doctor-Who-63010-05.jpg
Well, the latest season of Doctor Who has come and gone, and we've now all met the eleventh Doctor (Matt Smith), his Scottish hottie companion Amy Pond (Karen Gillan), and her boyfriend/ fiance/ husband/ 2,000 year old plastic man Rory (the brilliant but often overlooked Arthur Darvill). Together they've faced the revamped Daleks, saved 16th century Venice from vampire-alien-fish, and even used Amy's memories and the universe's greatest prison to restart all of creation and bring the Doctor out of the abyss of non-existence.

In all, it was a very good season: Matt Smith added a new energy ...
