BBC's 'Spooks' Signs Off After Nearly A Decade

Today sees the final hour of Spooks, the BBC's long-running and critically acclaimed espionage drama. After ten series and almost a decade on the air, the show signs off after its 85th episode on BBC One at 9 PM tonight.

The show first aired on May 13, 2002, telling the stories of a crack team of agents for Britain's elite spy agency MI5. It rose to become an institution of British TV, its ten series (seasons) virtually unheard of for a serial drama and more than that of other feted shows like Waking The Dead and Wire In The Blood.

Not to be confused with the John Cusack movie of the same name, Identity is the UK drama series that stars Keeley Hawes (last week's new release Upstairs Downstairs and the early seasons of Spooks/MI-5) and Aiden Gillen (HBO's current Game of Thrones and Tommy Carcetti on The Wire). Today, BBC Home Entertainment and Warner Home Video have released the recent remake of the classic serial Upstairs Downstairs. The three-hour miniseries comes packaged as a two-disc set. Here's the scoop on what you get.

I never saw the original Upstairs Downstairs, so I can't judge this one as compared to the original whatsoever. What I can say is that while I heard a lot of good things about this program when it first aired, I felt as if it didn't live up to the buzz.

At Switzerland's Locarno International Film Festival Anthony Hopkins has won an award for his directing and acting talents. The star was awarded for his work as director of Slipstream, in which he also starred as a tormented German writer.

The award for best actor was shared by Frenchman Michel Piccoli and Italian Michele Venitucci, while best actress was awarded to Spanish star Marian Alvares.
