Daryl Hannah says having Autism led to her decision to take a step back from acting. The condition often causes sufferers to have difficulties in social situations.
 
The 52-year-old star told People magazine she was diagnosed with the developmental disorder as a child, but she kept the health issue a secret shen she started acting in the late 1970s and early '80s.
 
Hannah says she had "debilitating shyness" and was scared of walking the red carpet at her film premieres or promoting her projects on talk shows.

The Roxanne star told People magazine: "I've never been comfortable being the center of attention. It's always freaked me out."

Hannah, who once dated Jackson Browne and the late John F. Kennedy Jr. was "terrified" of revealing her struggles to movie producers and refused to do interviews to promote her films.

Daryl Hannah was arrested in Texas on Thursday night while protesting against the construction of an oil pipeline.

The Roxanne actress, a longtime environmental campaigner, has been leading a demonstration against the controversial Keystone XL pipeline, which is being built to transfer crude oil from Canada to refineries on the Gulf Coast.

She was arrested on Thursday along with 78-year-old Eleanor Fairchild on suspicion of criminal trespassing and resisting arrest after they stood in front of construction equipment.

The pair was taken to the Wood County Jail in Quitman, Texas.
