Gellar was born April 14, 1977, and raised in Manhattan primarily by her mother, a nursery school teacher. She was "discovered" by an agent while very young, and made her professional debut playing Valerie Harper's daughter in the 1983 CBS TV-movie "An Invasion of Privacy."
