These Celebrities Quit Hollywood Forever

10 Celebrities Who Quit Hollywood Forever
Being a celebrity has its perks- the fame, the fortune, the ability to own an action figure version of yourself (or if you're WIll Smith, an entire room full of tiny, plastic you).

But there are- unlikely as it may seem- some downsides to being a household name. And so there are celebrities who give up on the "being famous" thing altogether, retiring to a life of quiet dignity among regular folk. At least until someone makes a list article about them.

So here for your enjoyment are 10 big names who achieved fame, only to say, "yeah, nah."

'Game Of Thrones' Star Carice Van Houten To Play Greta Garbo

5/21/2013 2:12pm EDT
Carice van Houten
Game of Thrones star Carice van Houten, who plays Lady Melisandre aka "the red woman" on the show, is set to hit the big screen as legendary Swedish actress Greta Garbo in an upcoming biopic.

The story will cover the silent film star's early life of poverty through her rise to fame.

"I was raised with silent films," Carice tells Screendaily.com. "I have always maintained an endless fascination for that era. Greta Garbo has gotten to me more than any other movie star and never let me go. I am strongly drawn to her story, her art, her loneliness and her beautiful complex structure."

The 1930s dress, which was expected to fetch $1,200, sold for $13,750, while her passport went under the hammer for $15,000 - $10,000 more than expected.

Feeling Blue: Anne Hathaway Is All Legs At The 'Valentine's Day' Premiere

2/10/2010 6:12pm EST
Anne Hathaway Pictures, Valentine
Like her "Valentine's Day" co-star Jessica Alba, Anne Hathaway used feathers as inspiration for her red carpet dress at the film's premiere in Hollywood on Feb. 8. See her pics!

Hathaway opted for a vibrant blue minidress, which was accentuated with whispy feather-like fabric around the bosom and hips. We just wish Anne paired her dress with a softer hair style.

In addition to "Valentine's Day," Anne stars in Tim Burton's upcoming film "Alice In Wonderland." Although she was originally asked to play Alice, she didn't want to play another "pretty girl in a fairy dress." She settled fo...

Anne Hathaway Takes Underwear From Film Sets

Anne Hathaway
"I have a bra from Brokeback Mountain and now I have the White Queen's knickers (from Alice In Wonderland). They're white and frilly and I wore them the other day actually." Anne Hathaway steals undergarments from her films.

Anne turned down the title role in Tim Burton's new "Alice In Wonderland" because she was fed up with playing a "pretty girl in a fairy dress." She told Britain's GQ, "I wanted the Queen to be a cross between Debbie Harry, Greta Garbo, David Bowie, with (a) little bit of the work of Dan Flavin thrown in for good measure."

And despite rumors, Anne will not be pl...

Review: 'Julie & Julia': Meryl Streep Shows Her Brilliance

8/4/2009 10:28am EDT
Julie & Julia
My God: Please enjoy every precious moment Meryl Streep ever spends in front of a movie camera. People wax poetically about the days when Bette Davis, Greta Garbo (anyone else that Kim Carnes mentioned?), Katharine Hepburn, Ingrid Bergman and Vivien Leigh graced the silver screen: The Golden Age of Hollywood! True, true (with a special emphasis on Bergman that, umm, someone may have a crush on) but, right now, arguably, the best actress that ever lived still humbles us with her presence. The odds are that no popular music artist will ever record a song based on her, but, goddammit, they sho...

Lights, Camera, Scientology?

12/17/2007 11:50am EST
Tom Cruise
With a ban in Germany on the horizon, scientology has come under severe media scrutiny and public debate in recent years. Ever since Tom Cruise defamed Brooke Shields during post-partum-depression-gate '07, the quasi-religion has been a heated topic. It's been called an oppressive cult. A money-guzzler. A fraud. And it has something to do with an ancient alien named Xenu. So why do so many public faces flock to the Scientology church's doors?

John Travolta, Jenna Elfman, Katie Holmes, Kirstie Alley, Jason Lee and Isaac Hayes are all reported Scientologists. For most of them, their beli...
