Oscar Predictions: Does 'Gravity' Carry Enough Weight?

February 28th, 2014 8:01pm EST
Oscar Predictions: Does 'Gravity' Carry Enough Weight?
For the most part, the major categories at the Oscars are fairly easy to predict. But some years there are upset winners (‘Shakespeare in Love,’ Marcia Gay Harden, Juliette Binoche, Adrien Brody, to name a few) that remind us that anything can happen.

This year is a little different. Who remembers a year where the race for Best Picture is down to three films, two of which are so close that they tied at the Producers’ Guild? It seems like there are some definite locks this year (Hello, Cate Blanchett) but you read it here: Nothing is guaranteed. Nothing.

That said, here are the most likely...

The 79-year-old star has no plans to stop acting any time soon and hates being described as "old" or "vintage", preferring to be praised for her enthusiasm rather than her longevity.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, she said: "It's the rudest word in my dictionary, 'retire'. And 'old' is another one. I don't allow that in my house. And being called 'vintage'.
"I don't want any of those old words. I like 'enthusiastic' and I like the word 'cut' because that means you've finished the shot."
The 'Philomena' actress also opened up...

SAG Award Nominees Named: '12 Years A Slave' Tops Nods (Full List)

December 11th, 2013 11:14am EST
12 Years a Slave
Some people were surprised by The Butler’s presence here, but I don’t see any surprises from them. Movies like Gravity and Her (which are frontrunners for a Best Picture nomination) aren’t large cast films, and wouldn’t get the Ensemble nomination over The Butler. The big surprise is Dallas Buyers Club, which is a relatively small cast, and did manage an Ensemble nomination. That could go a long way in getting DBC to a Best Picture nomination. Also, Daniel Bruhl is back in the race with a Supporting Actor nomination for Rush.

Kudos to the SAG members for nominating James Gandolfini for E...

Judi Dench Says Acting Has Got Harder With Age

September 21st, 2013 4:15pm EDT
Judi Dench
Dame Judi Dench finds acting harder as she gets older.

The 78-year-old screen star doesn't find it easy to learn her lines as she advances in age and can no longer absorb a script simply by reading it.

She said: "Is acting more challenging? It's more difficult to learn, of course - things take longer. It's not so organic. My husband [the late Michael Williams, also an actor] used to say to me, 'You never sit down to learn your lines, you know them organically'. He used to sit and actually read a script, but I could read it and somehow retain it. Don't ask me why. I don't know how, but I c...

January 7th, 2012 9:30am EST

Two Jews' Review 'My Week With Marilyn' And See Oscar Nod For Michelle Williams (Video)

November 22nd, 2011 3:00pm EST
My Week With Marilyn
Two Jews on Film - By Joan Alperin Schwartz: When the film 'My Week With Marilyn' directed by Simon Curtis, begins we see Marilyn Monroe on a stage singing 'That Ole Black Magic'... That's who I thought it was, anyway.

It actually took me a few seconds before realizing that I was watching not Monroe, but Michelle Williams. That's how good she is in her portrayal of the damaged, insecure, extremely sensual, extremely vulnerable Hollywood icon/sex symbol known as Marilyn Monroe. Or to put it simply, Michelle William's performance blew me away.

And the rest of the film is pretty wonderful a...

Two Jews' Review 'J. Edgar' And Duke It Out Over Eastwood's Biopic (Video)

November 8th, 2011 1:00pm EST
J. Edgar
Two Jews on Film - By Joan Alperin-Schwartz: Every once in awhile, you experience a performance by an actor that simply blows your mind. That's exactly what happened to me, when I watched Leonardo DiCaprio portray J. Edgar Hoover in Clint Eastwood's new film, 'J. Edgar.'

What makes a great performance are the subtle things an actor does. Things that inform the character… a gesture, a look, body language, the tilt of the head. DiCaprio obviously understands this because he absolutely nails the part.

Equally brilliant, is Armie Hammer (The Social Network) as Clyde Tolson, Hoover's long ti...
