Joan Crawford was as big a star as existed in Hollywood. Crawford was at MGM and her great rival Bette Davis at Warner Bros. Like Davis, Crawford was a fierce competitor for roles and demanded and got the very best in productions, co stars and Directors. At MGM she worked with Garbo, Gable, Tracy, etc but chafed under the competition of Norma Shearer, and after leaving MGM she went to WB with a dressing room adjacent to Bette Davis: Their feud simmering was at full boil. It was Crawford who got "Mildred Pierce" and won her sole Oscar. Years later after both movie queens careers had faded they got the chance of a lifetime and co starred in Robert Aldrich's "Whatever Happened to Baby Jane". While the film was to be distributed by WB, Jack Warner farmed out the production from his own lot to the then danky Producers Studio, that is how little expectation WB had for the film's success. However to the suprise of the Industry, the film was a sensational worldwide hit with Davis getting a Oscar nomination. Davis and most of Hollywood thought she would win her 3rd Oscar. Crawford had solicited the proxy of the absent nominees and when Anne Bancroft won in an upset, it was Crawford gliding to the stage basking in the applause as she accepted Bancroft's Oscar. Davis who by that time sincerely hated Crawford held a grudge until Crawford died.
