She winds up forging an unexpected bond with another former schoolmate (Patton Oswalt) who's had a particularly difficult life.

"Juno" collaborators Jason Reitman and screenwriter Diablo Cody re-team for the Paramount Pictures production.

Fun fact: The dog Hummer from the film was nominated for a Golden Collar Award, and Quentin Tarantino listed the movie as one of his favorites of...

2012 Critics Choice Awards Fashion: The Good, The Bad & The Ugly

January 13th, 2012 9:14am EST
Critics Choice Awards
Unlike the upbeat and youthful People's Choice Awards, the stars at Thursday night's Critics Choice Awards showed up in more subdued attire, taking their jobs much more seriously (and not in a good way).

Where was the pop of color? Where were the glittering gowns? We have one word for this bunch of celebs: boring.

Emma Stone continued her green trend from the People's Choice Awards in an emerald dress last night. But what's with the cutouts, strings and belt? Thumbs down.

We salute Elle Fanning for dressing her age, but we dislike the yellow and turqoise gown.

Check out all the good, ba...

Review: 'Young Adult' Is Immature

December 9th, 2011 11:21am EST
Poster
I have a superstition that a studio's confidence in a film can often be determined by length of the movie's Wikipedia page. Young Adult's Wikipedia is about 800 words long if you subtract links and other website jibba jabba. The recent Muppets has about 5000 words. The reason for invoking this completely unscientific ponderment of mine is because I'm a big fan of Director Jason Reitman, so this short wiki, not a week out from the release, was a bit odd to me.

And now I know why. “Young Adult” is shallow and awful, and, ha ha, has all the depth of a young adult novel about vampires. Except ...

Review: 'Young Adult' 'Two Jews On Film' Applaud Charlize Theron's Tour De Force Performance (Video)

December 7th, 2011 4:00pm EST
Young Adult
Two Jews on Film - By Joan Alperin-Schwartz: Mavis Gary, (Charlize Theron) 37, has a very pretty face and very pretty hair...except for the bald spot on the back of her head...Seems Mavis has a nasty little habit of pulling out her hair, whenever the mood strikes her.

She also has a high-rise apartment overlooking the Minneapolis skyline and an adorable Pomeranian (are there any other kind) named Dolce.

Mavis is a writer of a once popular series of Young Adult, aka teenage books featuring, a girl named Kendra. The series is coming to an end...that is if Mavis can ever finish the last and ...

GQ Australia Bosses Apologize For Taylor Lautner Gay Question

October 20th, 2011 8:42am EDT
Taylor Lautner
Editors at Australia's GQ magazine have come under fire for asking Taylor Lautner if gay movie bosses Gus Van Sant and Dustin Lance Black once made a pass at him.

In a recent interview with the publication, the Twilight star was asked if openly gay filmmaker Van Sant and screenwriter Black had come on to him at a dinner the trio shared in Los Angeles.

Lautner replied, "No, definitely not. I think they know I'm straight. But they're great guys. They're a lot of fun. It's not a coincidence that there was a writer, a director, and an actor at dinner."

Oscar winner Black was quick to reac...

'Evil Dead' Remake Confirmed By Bruce Campbell And Sam Raimi

July 18th, 2011 11:00am EDT
Bruce Campbell
"Believe in the remake, dawg! The project is real. In the works. Cool as hell. Scary as hell." That's what Bruce Campbell tweeted recently after a fan asked him about rumors of an Evil Dead remake.

The original film was a cult hit in the early 80s after it failed to make a splash in theaters due to excessive gore. It began director Sam Raimi's career, who would go on to direct the Spider-Man trilogy and Drag me to Hell.

Now it appears the original producing trio of Robert Campbell, Sam Raimi, and Robert Tapert are all in to re-create the horror film.

An official statement was releas...

Charmaine is being rushed to the hospital by ambulance, as Tara tries to provide comfort. She runs through a litany of Tara’s sins, including the wedding disturbance, and tells the staff at the hospital to keep the ‘crazy’ away from her and the baby. Of course, given her verbal diarrhoea in the ambulance, it’s debatable who the crazy is.

Speaking of crazy, let’s join Kate at the airport. She’s downloading her entire brain onto Ray, a baggage attendant, as she waits for her bags to reappear. Ray seems taken with Kate. Kate hangs out at the airport, waiting for her missing bag. Along comes o...

Biggest Movie Surprises of 2009

Star Trek
At the start of every new year, critics and movie fans alike look at the list of movies for the year and start to consider what looks the best, the worst, and what might surprise them. There are shocking hits, failures, and then the movies with the highest expectations that actually succeed ... or totally crash and burn. 2009 had some excellent blockbusters that might have annoyed the critics ("Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen," "G.I. Joe," "New Moon") but still managed to kill in the box office. Then there were the indie films that managed to become hits, or the big star names that neve...

The Informant
Last week, the long weekend gave me a chance to see "District 9" in the movie theater. The film's science fiction elements took a back seat to its moral objective however, which was roughly to serve as an allegory for the Apartheid in South Africa.

Treatment of the aliens by humans, as a subhuman species really becomes emotionally jarring through the intense blood and gore that comprise the latter half of the movie. Audiences ultimately walk away from "District 9" disgusted by the inhumanity of the human race.

A nontraditional narrative, "District 9" is largely told through the use ...

It has been teetering on the edge for a few years, but we will call it- the San Diego Comic-Con has been Sundanced. For those who do not understand this concept, let us explain. The Sundance Film Festival, started by Robert Redford as a way to help burgeoning filmmakers, became highly commercialized towards the end of the 1990s. Now, it is nearly impossible to submit true independent works, as the likes of Quentin Tarantino and Diablo Cody to name but a few, are also under the "independent" umbrella.

The line in the sand, what pounded the original mission's gravestone into the cold ...

Ellen Page's 'Smart People' Only as Scholarly as Zealous Senior in High School

April 11th, 2008 9:55am EDT
Smart People
(HollywoodChicago.com) – I’m flummoxed. I know “Smart People” was supposed to be comedic drama with a splash of romance. Instead, I have been misled. It’s not a comedy. It’s not a tragedy. It’s not even a tragicomedy.

“Smart People” is a blandly scripted “poor me” with an attempt at a plot and some glitzy Hollywood names thrown in for good box-office measure.

While I know this was no “Juno,” I couldn’t help cursing first-time writer Mark Poirier for not taking a much-needed page – or a full-fledged course of mentoring – from Oscar-winning “Juno” inker Diablo Cody.

Not too long ago Warner Bros. president of production, Jeff Robinov, stated, "We are no longer doing movies with women in the lead." Apparently, Robinov won't even look at a script with a female lead. Ticking off the names of guaranteed male money makers is easy: Will Smith, Ben Stiller, Adam Sandler, Will Ferrell, Tom Cruise, Bruce Willis, Jim Carrey, and even behind-the-camera ...

Amy Adams, star of the new movie 'Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day' looked stunning in a dark emerald green strapless number. This was a spectacular piece which showed off how much attention to detail was taken with such accents as the bustier style top section of the dress, the lovely belt and that amazingly slightly gathered train.
