Mixed martial arts star-turned-actress Gina Carano is to be honored with ActionFest's inaugural Chick (sic) Norris Award for her high-octane performance in Haywire.

The prize, named after the event's 2010 Lifetime Achievement Award recipient Chuck Norris, honors the Best Female Action Star of the year.

In its promotional spots, the flick seems like another of the tried-and-true "action hero goes on a rampage to right a wrong" films, and there's nothing wrong with that. AFI Fest hosted the world premiere of Haywire as their secret screening for the festival on Sunday. The film was noteworthy as the new film by Steven Soderbergh, but also the leading lady debut of athlete Gina Carano. The MMA fighter made her transition to action heroine as the star of the movie.

“All of this is surreal right now,” Carano told an audience after the film screening. “Steven was one of the most beautiful people and gentle people that spent time with me.”
