Josephine Baker [Columbia]
Release Date: 1951
Label: Columbia
Rating:

Josephine Baker's debut Columbia release was a 10" LP consisting of eight French songs, all derived from her Parisian career and two decades of success in that city. This includes "J'ai Deux Amours," her theme song (better known in America as "Two Loves Have I,") which she introduced in 1932 at the Casino de Paris. Also featured are a pair of songs, "Haiti" and "C'est Lui," that she sang in her film Zouzou. And "Aux Iles Hawaii" and "Pardon Si Je T'Importune" came from Baker's +Folies Bergere revues. The whole release was rather daring for Columbia Records of that day (which was in the process of trying to destroy Frank Sinatra's career at the time), and holds up extremely well across 50 years.
