Jean Arthur was born in 1900 but until her death her bios stated she was born in 1908

Jean Arthur was a big a female star in movies in the l930's as Garbo, Crawford, Shearer, and Bette Davis were. Arthur starred Frank Capra films such as in "Mr. Smith Goes To Washington", "Mr Deeds".

Jean Arthur was known to be very difficult and fought with Columbia's Harry Cohn. In her great career Ms. Arthur worked with James Stewart, Gary Cooper, Marlene Dietrih, Frank Capra, George Stevens, Billy Wilder among many other Hollywood professionals

After World War II Arthur worked less but did make " A Foreign Affair" with Marlene Dietrich and her last great movie was "Shane". She about to do "Born Yesterday" on Broadway but fell ill and that role went to Judy Holliday who reprised her role in the movies and won an Oscar.

Arthur faded from view but was lured back to Hollywood by Lucille Ball who wanted Jean Arthur to return to acting in a Desilu comedy. When that didn't pan out Ms. Arthur did finally make a TV series at Universal that was shown at 10 PM and show "The Jean Arthur Show " failed.

Sadly, while a unique actress with a glorious voice and a true star, (in fact her former lover David Selznick considered her for GWTW) Jean Arthur's great career really ended with "Shane"

I wish someone could have gotten Arthur in front of a movie camera in her later years. Capra wanted her of 'Pocketful of Miracles', she declined; Bette Davis played "Apple Annie"
