Topless Portrait Of Bea Arthur Sells For $1.9 Million

May 16th, 2013 12:16pm EDT
Bea Arthur
An anonymous bidder paid nearly $2 million to take ownership of a notorious topless portrait of actress Bea Arthur.

Brooklyn, New York-based artist John Currin painted "Bea Arthur Naked" in 1991, causing controversy and cries of misogyny from critics.

"It's historically significant — it's radical to sexualize someone people think of as asexual," Christie's spokesman Koji Inoue told the New York Post. "The painting has a visual toughness to it — but it's also fun."

The piece went under the hammer at Christie's auction house in New York City Wednesday night, fetching a whopping $1,915,000....

Top Ten TV Goodbyes: Who Makes The List?

May 20th, 2011 5:00pm EDT
The Office Goodbye Michael
With Steve Carell leaving ‘The Office’ last month, it’s time to reflect on big goodbye episodes. I thought ‘The Office’ pulled off his departure well, although I’m not sure how I feel about the future of the show.

Here’s my top ten list of other shows that have successfully sent a character off in style. The rules: it is a true “goodbye” episode with a major character or star departing. If it happens off-screen, it doesn’t count. So that’s why I’m not including some obvious departures, such as Rhoda Morgenstern, Frank Burns, Coach Pantusso, etc.

Here they are. Do you agree?

Late Golden Girls star Bea Arthur took a secret to the grave - she reportedly contracted a venereal disease while she was serving in the Marine Corps.

When Enough Is Enough: Worst TV Spin-Offs

February 26th, 2008 2:21pm EST
Saved by the Bell: The New Class
The logic behind the spin-off is very sound. Take a beloved character or concept from a pre-existing series and create an entire new show. You have an established character or brand and thus a built-in fan base. It makes perfect sense, no?

Unfortunately, the reality of the situation is not quite that simple. Certainly there have been spin-offs that attracted both fans and critics and managed to create a legacy all their own. Shows like "Frasier," "Angel," and "The Jeffersons" instantly come to mind. But for every successful spin-off, there have been dozens of miserable failures...
