'Harry Potter' Director To Helm 'Doctor Who' Movie

November 15th, 2011 12:00pm EST
Doctor Who
Harry Potter director David Yates is teaming up with BBC to create the first Doctor Who film since 1966. Yates directed the last four blockbuster films in the Harry Potter series.

"We're looking at writers now. We're going to spend two to three years to get it right," he told Variety. "It needs quite a radical transformation to take it into the bigger arena.

"The notion of the time-travelling Time Lord is such a strong one, because you can express story and drama in any dimension or time."

The Doctor Who series ran from 1963 until 1989. After a one-off TV movie in 1996, the series was re...

Harry and Friends
Potter-philes bored by Lord of the Rings-esque travel in “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1,” will finally understand its purpose after watching “Part 2.” Removing the tedious setup, allows director David Yates and writer Steve Kloves to deliver a thoroughly gratifying conclusion to the series, which doesn’t waste any screen time.

Picking up where “Part 1” left off, our heroes Harry, Ron, and Hermione resume their mission to destroy Lord Voldemort’s three remaining Horcruxes, the items that give him immortality. Voldemort learns of their plan though, and plots to confront the...

Two Jews' Reviews 'Harry Potter & Deathly Hallows-Part 2': One Gives Standing 'O' To Final Epic Adventure (Video)

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2
'Two Jews on Film' By Joan Alperin Schwartz: 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows-Part 2' is the final adventure in the 'Harry Potter' series. The film is directed brilliantly by David Yates and cleverly adapted for the screen by Steve Klos.

This is not only the last film in the franchise, but it is the best.

From the first shot...where we see Voldemort (Ralph Fiennes) holding his sword up to the darkened sky, followed by Severus Snape (Alan Rickman) staring out into the gloomy courtyard at Hogwarts, you know...you're in for one great ride.

For those of you who haven't read the books ...

Trailer Talk: This Week In Movies - 'Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows: Part 2,' 'Winnie The Pooh' & More

Harry Potter
Last week I took a break from the theater while I was on vacation, so I didn’t catch anything new. However I did watch the Nick Cassavetes crime drama “Alpha Dog.”

“Alpha Dog” squanders a talented cast of young actors including Anton Yelchin, Justin Timberlake, Emile Hirsch, Olivia Wilde, and Ben Foster with poorly developed character relationships and atrociously written dialogue.

Cassavetes throws in lots of curses to make the young punks seem like hard asses, but instead it makes them seem like ridiculous caricatures of the supposed real life people they’re based on. The only believ...

Last week was thoroughly busy for me watching movies. I posted reviews for “Unstoppable” and for “Morning Glory.” Definitely check them out if you have not already.

I also had the chance to see the Danny Boyle film “127 Hours” starring James Franco. The gut wrenching survival tale is a powerful experience that is both visually stimulating and emotionally jarring. Boyle makes incredibly effective use of split screens and Franco’s performance contains surprising levity despite his life threatening situation. My Grade: A

Harry Potter fans will be thrilled this week to see the...
