Continuing with my sneak preview reviews of Boardwalk Empire - this one of 4.2 - courtesy of screeners from Starpulse, guaranteed to be spoiler free, and to be followed this Sunday with a proper recap/review after the episode has aired in New York, just up the road from A.C.

We learn what Richard, whom we saw on a killing spree in 4.1, is really up to.  And, in fact, 4.2 is one of the best Richard shows we've seen in lo these four seasons.  We learn about his family, and we see yet another very tender side of him.

Episode 4.2 also introduces this season's (so far) most important new chara...

August 9th, 2012 12:07pm EDT
The Bourne Legacy
Jeremy Renner isn't playing Jason Bourne, but he's taking over the Bourne franchise for Matt Damon in The Bourne Legacy. Renner's also not the first actor or actress to become the new face of a franchise. Here are 10 other franchise recasts:

Bruce Banner - Eric Bana/Edward Norton/Mark Ruffalo: Bana signed for three Hulk films, but was replaced by super fan Norton when Marvel re-acquired the rights. Norton re-wrote The Incredible Hulk and starred in a hit, but was unable to come to a deal when a role in The Avengers was available. Ruffalo filled in, and was given positive reviews.

'House' Recap: Nobody’s Fault

February 6th, 2012 9:51pm EST
nobodys fault
This week’s episode of “House,” entitled “Nobody’s Fault,” is the most engaging and stylized episode of this season. It reminds viewers that though the show can occasionally fall into a formulaic rut, show creator David Shore and his brilliant writers will never leave fans dangling for long.

Directed by Greg Yaitanes, a veteran director of not just “House” but a slew of television dramas including “Lost” and “Heroes,” this week’s episode is filmed in a “Rashomon” style of storytelling, a method most recently co-opted by David Fincher’s “The Social Network.” Like Akira Kurosawa’s classic fi...

On DVD: 'Source Code' Smart, Original Sci-fi

July 26th, 2011 2:13pm EDT
Gyllenhaal/Monaghan
Sometimes it feels like original ideas are against the rules in Hollywood; most of the movies that get made, even the good ones, are rehashes of the same old ideas. This year’s Best Picture winner, for instance, was a film about an unorthodox therapist who is able to help our protagonist when other therapists have failed. Someone recently pointed out to me, it’s the same basic plot as “Good Will Hunting;” I mentioned that “Mary Poppins” is cut from the same cloth as well. Old ideas rehashed = box office (and Oscar) glory.

Which makes “Source Code,” a movie based around an original ide...

March 31st, 2011 11:53am EDT
Source Code
'Source Code' directed by Duncan Jones stars Jake Gyllenhall as Captain Colter Stevens, a Blackhawk helicopter pilot in the U.S. Army who one morning wakes with a jolt to find himself on a commuter train heading into Chicago.

Seated opposite Colter is a woman named Christina Warren (Michelle Monaghan) who seems to know him very well. Only trouble is Captain Colter has no idea who this girl is or how he got on the train. The last thing Colter does remember is flying a helicopter mission in Afghanistan. Things get even stranger when he looks in the mirror. The face reflecting back is not...

Josh Brolin Proud Of Bar Fight

September 21st, 2010 10:20pm EDT
Josh Brolin
Josh Brolin wears his 2008 jail time as a badge of honor - because he's proud he stood up for "W" co-star Jeffrey Wright in a Louisiana bar encounter.

The actors were arrested and charged with interfering with police business following the altercation at the Stray Cat bar in Shreveport but the charges against both have since been dropped.

And Brolin insists he'd do what he did all over again - whatever the consequences - because he hates bar bullies.

He tells Playboy magazine, "Going to jail that time was for an excellent reason: Jeffrey Wright didn't do anything... I don't like bullies....

SHREVEPORT, La. (AP) - Actors Josh Brolin and Jeffrey Wright, along with members of a crew filming an Oliver Stone movie, were arrested during a bar fight Saturday morning, police said.

Five Best & Worst Films Starring Samuel L. Jackson

March 27th, 2008 4:03pm EDT
Samuel L. Jackson
Samuel L. Jackson is one of those rare character actors who can take even the weakest of scripts and turn the dialogue into pure cinematic gold. Film after film he continues to deliver some of the most memorable one-liners and poetic obscenities, and he always manages to steal the show.

The challenge with ranking Sam Jackson films is ignoring the obvious victor for best role in Pulp Fiction where he plays Jules Winnfield, the Jheri Curl wearing, Bible quoting hit man. Landing the "Fiction" role was no doubt a turning point in Jackson's career and remains to this day his finest film pe...
