Denzel Washington pays tribute to boxer Rubin 'Hurricane' Carter

Denzel Washington and boxing legend Mike Tyson have paid tribute to sports icon Rubin Carter following his death on Sunday (20Apr14).

The fighter, known by his nickname Hurricane, had been battling prostate cancer and passed away in Toronto, Canada.

Carter's boxing career got off to a promising start, but in 1967, he was wrongfully convicted of three murders in his native New Jersey and spent 19 years in prison before he was finally released in 1985 following multiple appeals.

Denzel Washington's star power has helped make the revival of A Raisin In The Sun a hit on Broadway, with the show earning $1.2 million (£705,446) in its first full week.

The latest production of Lorraine Hansberry's award-winning 1959 race drama has been playing to sold-out audiences at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre in New York since its 3 April (14) opening, making it the fifth highest-grossing show of the week ending 13 April (14).

In addition, the play is the only non-musical to surpass the $1 million (£597,836) mark in a week.

Musical inspired by Tupac books opening date

A long awaited stage show featuring the music of late rapper Tupac Shakur is set to hit the Broadway stage in June (14).

The musical, titled Holler If Ya Hear Me, has been in the works since 2012, and in 2013, the production's premiere was put on hold due to a lack of available theatres.

The show, which opens on 19 June (14) at the Palace Theater in New York, will tell the story of two friends surviving inner-city life in the American Midwest.

Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg's new movie 2 Guns has shot to the top of the U.S. box office thanks to a $27.4 million (£18.2 million) opening weekend take.

The all-action buddy-cop comedy knocks Hugh Jackman's latest outing as The Wolverine off the top spot and into second place. The Marvel Studios movie raked in $21.7 million (£14.4 million) in its second weekend on release.

The new Smurfs sequel, The Smurfs 2, debuts in third place with $18.2 million (£12.1 million).
