Cannes Film Festival Raises The Profile Of Female Directors

May 19th, 2014 7:20pm EDT
Cannes Film Festival Raises The Profile of Female Directors
The Cannes Film Festival is halfway through its run and all eyes this year are on the females making an impact on the scene. With director Jane Campion stepping in as this year's President of the Jury for judging, there's been a call to recognize the contribution of women in the industry.

As the only female director to have won the coveted Palme d'Or for The Piano in 1993, she said at a press conference earlier this week, "I think you'd have to say [there is] inherent sexism in the industry. Thierry [Fremaux, artistic director of the festival] told us only 7% of the 1800 films submitted to...

Review: Director Xavier Gens Latest 'The Divide' The First Five-Star Film Of 2012

January 9th, 2012 12:45pm EST
The Divide photo
As a filmmaker, the possible potential of director Xavier Gens has been a source of much discussion. His first feature "Frontier(s)" was a visceral and controversial addition to the slasher genre, not to mention an impressive first film. His next project "Hitman" also had all the Gens signature visuals, but proved to be a classic case of all style, little substance. (Although I always sensed heavy studio interference was the creative downfall on that one!) But with the arrival of his third outing "The Divide," Gens finally quells all whispers of his probable cinematic prowess and success...

Hayden Panettiere Breaks Up With Boyfriend

May 12th, 2011 8:28am EDT
Hayden Panettiere
Hollywood actress Hayden Panettiere has ended her romance with her boxer boyfriend Wladimir Klitschko.

The Heroes star, 21, has been dating the Russian sportsman, 35, since 2009 but they have now revealed the relationship is over.

Panettiere confirmed the news in a statement, obtained by Germany's Bunte.de, while the boxer has blamed the split on their struggle to maintain a long-distance relationship.

Panettiere's statement reads, "While we decided to split, we feel great sympathy and respect for each other and will surely stay close friends."

Klitschko adds, "We had a great time t...

Celebrities Who Are Single, Fabulous & Loving It!

January 19th, 2010 9:00am EST
Jennifer Aniston & Gerard Butler
With Valentine's Day less than a month away, the single-serving folk have already begun their grumblings about how this lovely-dovey holiday is nothing but a ridiculous money-making ploy by the greeting card industry, and to a certain degree, they're right.

Valentine's Day is a time for couples to celebrate the love they have for one another via heart-shaped boxes of chocolates and teddy bears with "I love you" written on the tummies. It is also the most exclusionary of the holiday lineup, giving the shaft to all those table-for-one people.

For most couples, Valentine's Day declarat...

Trailer Talk: This Week In Movies - 'Transylmania,' 'Everybody's Fine' & More

November 30th, 2009 10:04am EST
Brothers
Tomorrow evening I will have the opportunity to see Jason Reitman's new travel comedy "Up in the Air" starring George Clooney. I have read a number of early favorable reviews of the film, and I really like Reitman's movies, so I'm fairly excited.

Comedy seems to prevail as a common theme this week. At the box office there will be two dramas and three comedies. Two of the films premiering are American adaptations of foreign films. In addition to "Up in the Air" films opening this week include "Armored," "Brothers," "Everybody's Fine," "Serious Moonlight," and "Transylmania."

'Heroes' Recap: A Slow, Boring Episode

September 30th, 2009 8:00am EDT
Heroes
The two-hour premier was sadly misleading. It made audiences believe every episode would be entertaining and insightful. Perhaps "Heroes" cannot fulfill its weekly purpose caged within just one small hour per week. Maybe they need two hours every week in order for us to understand how certain plot lines make any sense whatsoever.

This week starts off with a whimper. Peter looks proudly at his latest clipping. He single handedly averted a MTA bus crisis. Claire tries to avoid Gretchen and the leader of the carnival, Samuel, decides to suck some ink into his hand and go looking for Peter.

This week starts off with a shock. In a series of interesting close-ups, jump cuts and repeat edits Danko puts on shaving cream, places a straight razor into a guard and begins shaving his face. His alarm goes off telling him his front door is open. He wipes off the shaving cream, you'd think he's just leave it on, gets his gun out, which he always wears in it's holster, and makes his way to the front door. He closes the door and back tracks into his living room where he finds the Puppeteer gift-wrapped with a red bow and hanging from his ceiling in a makeshift theater stage complete with c...

'Heroes' Crashes and Burns

February 3rd, 2009 2:02pm EST
Heroes
Paul Greengrass must have designed the sloppy first episode of the new "Heroes" Chapter because they borrowed the cinematography from "The Bourne Ultimatum" and they really should give it back. NBC is apparently hurting for money and it looks as if they cut the budget for this floundering show. In response the writers decided to cut as much dialog and character development as possible and insert clichéd action sequences in which the heroes are captured by HRG backed by Nathan Petrelli. To further stretch the dwindling funds they also shot everything through a pinhole camera and succeeded in...

Latest 'Heroes' Ep Has Bad Writing, Predictable Plot Points

So this pretentious episode of Heroes begins with a narration about the meaning of an eclipse being unknowable and divine yet somehow we all know that in the next episode it will all be magically revealed, oh yeah, because they've been advertising this whole thing since last week.

Arthur Petrelli stands in front of Hiro, his hands over Hiro's ears, squeezing Hiro's head, Hiro screams and screams and screams some more. Apparently we all took the same sleeping pill, and while we were knocked out we had the same nightmare: that "Heroes" was going nowhere very fast, introducing new characters who we didn't care about because we knew nothing about them and creating plot scenarios which felt forced and clichéd.

Our Favorite TV Ensembles

June 12th, 2008 9:00am EDT
Lost
An ensemble cast is a group of actors in which each character/actor is assigned an equal level of importance to the story. Sometimes even if there is an established "main character," a show can be considered an ensemble because individuals are treated with the same care and development as everyone else on the show.

This sort of cast style gives the audience a chance to connect with several different characters rather than just one; if a viewer does not like one of the characters or cannot relate to them, there will be several more to choose from. It creates very broad storylines and v...
