50 Years Later, 'The Dick Van Dyke Show' Still Holds Up

September 19th, 2011 8:18pm EDT
'The Dick Van Dyke Show'
It’s almost impossible to believe, but it’s true: ‘The Dick Van Dyke Show’ premiered on CBS 50 years ago next month. Yes, it was half a century ago that America was first introduced to the Petries’ living room and the office of Alan Brady’s writing staff.

What’s even more amazing is that the show still holds up better than ever. ‘The Dick Van Dyke Show’ was one of the first sitcoms to depict a husband and wife who actually had the hots for each other – even though they supposedly slept in separate beds. (It was obvious that wasn’t always the case. I mean, they had a kid and everything.)...

Denoff started in TV writing for shows like 'Your Show of Shows' and 'McHale's Navy' before he struck gold with writing partner Bill Persky. Carl Reiner recruited them to write for Van Dyke's show, and the pair became favorites in the latter half of the show's run. They won an Emmy in 1964 for various episodes, and in 1966 were nominated for two episodes: They won for the classic 'Coast to Coast Big Mouth' e...

Classic TV Comedy Icons: Where Are They Now?

January 28th, 2011 11:16am EST
Hot In Cleveland
In the season premiere of TV Land’s ‘Hot in Cleveland,’ Betty White’s character, Elka, found herself in jail. A slim cell mate who called her “fresh meat” turned around and turned out to be none other than Mary Tyler Moore. The cameo was more a wink at the two icons’ history together, with the characters noting it had been 33 years since they’d seen each other – exactly as long as it had been since Moore and White worked together on ‘The Mary Tyler Moore Show.’

This sequence made me wonder – what are all the iconic TV actors from the glory days up to? Aside from this cameo, Moore re-eme...

Movie Remakes & Recastings We Hope To Never See

June 8th, 2009 9:40am EDT
Mary Poppins
In the wake of the current brain-draining drive to remake just about everything Hollywood has ever had to offer, there are some films that are so sacred they should never be touched. This is a blatant retort to the deluge of watered down franchises, remakes, medium changes, etc. It ranges in levels of snark from low to apocalyptic strength.

My frustration with this extremely long trend came to a fever pitch after watching the Obsessed trailer. Anyone even peripherally familiar with Fatal Attraction could easily catch the obvious, racially spurred recasting of a classic film.

Lindsay Lohan Practices British Accent

October 24th, 2006 8:41am EDT
Lindsay Lohan
Lindsay Lohan is worried about an upcoming role in which she has to talk with a British accent because she dreads her efforts being compared to Dick Van Dyke. Van Dyke's performance in 1960s movie Mary Poppins features a notoriously unconvincing London cockney accent, and Lohan is keen to avoid any comparisons with her turn in "A Woman Of No Importance."

She says, "I'm going to London in the spring to make a movie with Keira Knightley. It's a period piece and my character has a British accent. But it's crazy. If I hang out with a British person for an hour or so, I start talking just ...
