Kurt Sutter Thought 'Outside The Box' When Casting Marilyn Manson In 'Sons Of Anarchy'

Marilyn Manson
"Sons of Anarchy" creator Kurt Sutter talked about casting rockers Marilyn Manson and Courtney Love during the Television Critics Association summer tour on Monday.

He explained how he likes to mix things up with surprising casting.

"I tend to do this every season, I like to do some casting that's a little bit outside the box, you know, from Stephen King to David Hasselhoff – we try to do stuff that's fun," he explained.

Manson's friendship with Sutter helped him land the role of Ron Tully, a white supremacist prisoner who Jax [Charlie Hunnam] uses to expand his power base.

Sons of Anarchy
The honchos at Sons Of Anarchy have come under fire from members of Parents Television Council after depicting a school shooting scene in its season six premiere. The episode, which aired on FX on Tuesday, featured a storyline about a young boy who pulls a gun out of his backpack and begins shooting in school.

Bosses at the PTC have urged those outraged by the plotline to contact their local politicians and call for them to back a bill that would allow consumers to purchase customisable cable options, instead of receiving a package which would automatically include the FX channel.

Sons of Anarchy finished its fifth season last Tuesday on FX. To discuss the season in general, as well as offer hints as to what season six will entail, Kurt Sutter, the creator/showrunner who also plays inmate Otto on the show, participated in a conference call last week with reporters.

Here are the highlights. If you haven’t seen through the season finale, you may want to turn away now:

On killing Opie this season: “I didn’t want to drag it out, sort of have people, not see it coming because of bad execution, but see it coming because of the natural progression of the world. I really w...

Kurt Sutter
Last week, my town of Hoboken, NJ was hit very, very hard by Hurricane Sandy. (Thanks to all, by the way, who sent kind words on Facebook and Twitter.)

My power came back relatively early compared to the rest of my fellow citizens—early morning AM. And cable/Internet followed and came back that night. Since then, I’ve tried catching up on my writing and, of course, on the TV shows I missed.

One of those shows was Sons of Anarchy. Creator Kurt Sutter apparently bought digital copies of the show’s episode—I’ve seen reports of up to 5,000.

I found out because I follow Kurt on Twitter and he...

Rescue Me
After spending some time with FOX, my TCA (Television Critics Association) blog comes to an end with a look at sister network FX, which brought to Beverly Hills four returning series and a new one. Not to mention one big moment that I may unfortunately never be able to get out of my brain.

Executive Session

Last time we talked about FX, I mentioned that I have a great deal of respect for network president John Landgraf. I was certainly happy to hear the announcement Saturday morning that Landgraf, who's been with FX for more than seven years, had renewed his contract for three more. He'...

People follow celebrities on Twitter for entertainment. And, maybe to feel like they’re Facebook friends with the person. Often, celebrity tweets are as mundane as typical Facebook status updates, but some of them understand it’s a way to reach hundreds of thousands of people.

Unfortunately, some celebrities forget that too, and some of them say things they wish they could take back. Public figures have been humiliated, reprimanded and fired for things they’ve said on Twitter. So, we’ve decided to make a little list of celebrities who should think twice before tweeting anything ever ag...
