Review: Captivating Taissa Farmiga Gives 'Anna' Its Inner Life

June 4th, 2014 11:15am EDT
Anna
As a genre, psychological thrillers are getting harder and harder to come by. It could be because of their complex nature or the need for the audience to pay attention to the smallest detail, but frankly they’ve just become a hard film feat to pull off in the area of originality. In the case of the new suspense story flick "Anna," there’s some definite familiarity within the memory detective framework that makes the film fall under the average moniker. But there’s also a single breathtaking stand-out performance that begs to be seen – turns out the real allure of "Anna" is the gal hersel...

Two Jews' Review 'John Carter' And Are Worlds Apart (Video)

March 8th, 2012 2:00pm EST
John Carter
Two Jews on Film - By Joan Alperin Schwartz: Okay, so first I have to say that I loved 'John Carter', the Disney 3D Sci-Fi adventure film directed by Andrew Stanton (WALL-E). The plot can seem slightly more complicated than it is, so I'll just give you the main points.

First, there's John Carter (the very handsome, Taylor Kitsch) a post Civil War Veteran who's absolutely fed up with war. All he wants to do is find, a certain cave, (that is supposedly filled with gold) and spend the rest of his life far far away from any kind of conflict. Good luck with that.

While running away from the U...

Protesters Disrupt Filming On Kathryn Bigelow's Osama Bin Laden Movie

March 2nd, 2012 6:36pm EST
Kathryn Bigelow
Production on director Kathryn Bigelow's Osama Bin Laden movie in northern India was disrupted by protests on Friday after Hindu locals became angry that their city had been transformed to portray sworn enemy Pakistan.

The Hurt Locker filmmaker has been forced to shoot the new project, about the hunt for the Al Qaeda leader, in India after being denied permission to film in neighboring Pakistan, where the terrorist mastermind was shot and killed by U.S. troops last year.

Crewmembers were subsequently forced to use Chandigarh to mirror the Pakistani city of Lahore, but the transformation...

Review: 'Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy' Slow, Drawn-Out And Distinctively Drab

December 6th, 2011 4:00pm EST
Tinker photo
I’m all for films that take their time. There’s nothing quite like the bravery of a picture that dares to engage by fleshing out those quiet moments and infusing character insights that longingly linger. In his previous film "Let The Right One In," Swedish filmmaker Tomas Alfredson wielded this delicate bravado like a master swordsman, bringing his slow and methodic style to the done-to-death tale of vampires to illicit freshness. Problem is that in his latest outing "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy" the long book and material upon which the film is based and the unrushed pacing of Alfredso...

A test pilot embraces his destiny as a cosmic superhero in Casino Royale director Martin Campbell's adaptation of the popular DC Comics series "Green Lantern."

Ever since he saw his fearless father perish in a tragic aviation mishap, all Hal Jordan (Ryan Reynolds) could think about was flying -- it was the only thing the brash, cocky, and irresponsible test pilot ever truly excelled at. Little did he realize he was destined for something much bigger. Somewhere out in space, a powerful force of evil known as Parallax is spreading fear and destruction; the only hope for defeating Parallax is...

Review: 'Green Lantern' 'Two Jews On Film' Agree This Superhero Falls To The Ground (Video)

June 16th, 2011 8:10pm EDT
Green Lantern
By Joan Alperin-Schwartz: Okay, so this is how the story goes...In a universe far, far away (where else would it be) an elite, powerful force has existed for centuries. Protectors of peace and justice, they are called the Green Lantern Corps.

Helpful fact to know for those of you unfamiliar with the DC comic...Green is the color of will. Yellow is the color of fear. So...green is good...yellow, bad...very very bad.

Moving along...Each Green Lantern wears a ring that grants him the ability to create anything that their mind can imagine...Pretty cool, right?

Unfortunately, this re...

Trailer Talk: This Week in Movies - 'The Company Men,' 'No Strings Attached,' & 'The Way Back'

January 17th, 2011 9:35am EST
Company Men
Keeping with my plan from last week, I had the chance to see another film this week from 2010 receiving Oscar buzz: “The Kids Are All Right.” Honestly I was surprised that the movie has received such high acclaim, because it failed to hook me.

“The Kids Are All Right,” tells the story of an alternative family with lesbian parents named Nic (Annette Benning) and Jules (Julianne Moore). Their children Joni (Mia Wasikowska) and Laser (Josh Hutcherson) become curious about their biological father, so they contact the fertility company their mothers used to find their sperm donor. They find...

The New 'Robin Hood': Did It Need A Remake?

May 12th, 2010 9:20am EDT
Robn Hood - Dit it need a remake
Robin Hood is one of the most famous folklore heroes of all time, and the first rhymes and stories about the noble outlaw go as far back as the 14th century. He is typically known as a follower of King Richard II, the Lionheart, and his enemies are the Sheriff of Nottingham and the ambitious Prince John. In time Robin Hood had a whole gang behind him with names as famous as his, like Little John, Will Scarlet, Friar Tuck, and Maid Marian. In most tales he chose to rob from the rich to give to the poor, fighting the greed of the upper classes with his bow, and over the past few centuries thi...

'Kick-Ass' Lives Up To Its Name

April 16th, 2010 9:21am EDT
Kick-Ass Poster
Matthew Vaughn’s “Kick-Ass” features young superheroes but don’t be mistaken; this is NOT a movie for kids. These protagonists inhabit a world riddled with violent crime, where the average citizens are sheep. The general public is more interested in watching others being victimized than stepping in to help. Our heroes in “Kick-Ass” are tired of sitting back while evil men carry out vile deeds, and they are willing to fight fire with fire to take down the bad guys.

Dave Lizewski (Aaron Johnson) is your average nerdy high school kid. He wastes time talking comics with his friends and he ...
