'Godzilla' Not The Star Of GODZILLA - The Lizard Needs A Better Agent (Video)

'Godzilla' Not The Star Of GODZILLA - The Lizard Needs A Better
By Joan Alperin Schwartz

Might as well get right to it. What bothered me most about 'Godzilla' is that Godzilla is not the star of the film. He's barely a supporting player.

When the name of the film is GODZILLA, you'd expect our favorite, fire-breathing, bad-tempered, over-grown lizard to be the main character. Unfortunately, that is not the case.

Who are the main characters you ask? Star crossed lovers - aka MUTOS (Massive Unidentified Terrestrial Organism) Seriously? That's the name the scientists, way back when, gave to these ancient flying creatures?

Okay, so these two MUTOS ar...

Check Out 'The Tempest,' Now On Blu-ray

September 15th, 2011 6:02am EDT
The Tempest
"Across the Universe's" Julie Taymor shakes up Shakespeare with her adaptation of "The Tempest," retrofitting the fantastical tale with a female lead, casting Academy Award-winning actress Helen Mirren in what is usually the male role of Prospero.

The storyline follows the newly coined Prospera (Mirren), an exiled magician who uses her powers to call upon a tempest to bring her enemies to the island she's been forced to call home, not knowing that it will bring a suitor to her daughter, Miranda (Felicity Jones).

The Miramax/Touchstone release also stars David Strathairn, Djimon Hounsou, R...

Mega-Emmy Diary 2010

2010 Emmys
It's Emmy time again, kids. And you know what that means: Mega Emmy Diary time.

Now this is something of special ceremony in my estimation as it is so chock full of new nominees (four alone in each comedic supporting category!) that we're likely to see some surprises and some truly touched performers break through.

So, without further ado, let's see what Jimmy Fallon can do...

5:00 – We start with a backstage shot – one of my favorite things about the Emmys has always been when the person directing the show wins and we get a look at the show being put together as it happens. So, needless...

Trailer Talk: This Week In Movies 7/26 - 8/1

August 3rd, 2009 11:08am EDT
G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra
Over the weekend, I caught Judd Apatow's new film "Funny People" starring Adam Sandler and Seth Rogen. "Funny People" lived up to my expectations; it's funny at points with an appropriate seriousness that's present throughout the movie.

I thoroughly enjoyed the bond that Sandler and Rogen's characters form over the course of the film. Rogen plays a socially awkward comic struggling to find his way, and Sandler is a jaded celebrity trying to make meaning out of his tragic situation. I was surprised by how unlikable Sandler's character is at points, revealing that his problems in life a...

'Monk' Pays Tribute To Kamel, Introduces New Therapist

Monk
Get out some clean wipes, fresh bottled spring water, and detective caps - "Monk" is back for a seventh season! The last time the obsessive-compulsive hero was seen, he was running from the law in an intense two-part episode where Monk was framed for murder. His "death" gave him the freedom to find the real culprit, and for the first time in years he gained a clue in the tragic murder of his wife Trudy. Whether or not the show will get to this investigation quickly or draw it out another seven years is anyone's guess, but hopefully it will be the former.

First of all, it must be known...

My Blueberry Nights
(HollywoodChicago.com) – We see sensual close-up shots of blueberry pie overflow with aqueducts of vanilla ice cream in Wong Kar-Wai's opening sequence of "My Blueberry Nights". This dreamy scene sets the tone of the latest film from the famous Chinese director as he confronts the West with his unique cinematic style.

Split into three separate stories, the film begins in a bohemian New York café owned by Jeremy (Jude Law) where Elizabeth (Norah Jones) discovers that her boyfriend has left her for another woman.

Distraught, she leaves her keys with sympathetic Jeremy and hopes her ...

Film Review: Reality Trumps Fantasy In 'Spiderwick Chronicles'

February 12th, 2008 5:29pm EST
The Spiderwick Chronicles
The Spiderwick Chronicles may not be in the same fantasy league as the tales of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis and J.K. Rowling. Yet the family flick based on the books of Tony DiTerlizzi and Holly Black is an all-around class act, even if its world of ogres and goblins is a bit stale in the wake of its more ambitious cousins in the over-the-rainbow genre.

The human characters are the main source of wonder here. Freddie Highmore, Sarah Bolger and Mary-Louise Parker authentically capture the fractured spirit of a family newly cast into single-parent mode, while David Strathairn adds a wistf...

Survey Says 'Crash' Should Win Best Picture

March 2nd, 2006 2:24pm EST
According to a new Harris poll, 20 percent of U.S. adults say Crash should win the Best Picture Oscar this year. Only 13 percent believe Brokeback Mountain should win, followed by 10 percent who each say Good Night and Good Luck and Munich should take home the award. The fifth nominee Capote has the support of just 4 percent of adults.

What may be worrisome for the producers of the Academy Awards is that 24 percent of adults say they are not sure who should win, and 18 percent think none of these five should win. Without being invested in a movie, will they tune in to watch the awards?...
