Hugh Laurie Confirms 'House' Will End After This Season

February 8th, 2012 11:24pm EST
House
Hugh Laurie will hang up his cane as cranky doctor Gregory House in May after confirming hit medical drama House will end this season.

In a joint statement from Laurie and executive producers of the show David Shore and Katie Jacobs, released to the media on Wednesday, the trio announced House will not be back for a ninth season.

The press release reads, "The decision to end the show now, or ever, is a painful one, as it risks putting asunder hundreds of close friendships that have developed over the last eight years - but also because the show itself has been a source of great pride to e...

'House' Recap: Better Half

January 25th, 2012 12:13pm EST
House
After a long winter break, “House” is back with one of the best episodes of this season. Season 8 of Fox’s once great medical drama has been decent overall, but not nearly as exciting as earlier seasons. “Better Half,” though, is a perfect example of why loyal fans continue to watch House’s antics week after week, year after year.

The episode focuses on a thirty-something man named Andres (Ivo Nandi) who is suffering from early onset Alzheimer’s disease. Suffering with him is his loving and devoted wife, Natalie (Melanie Lynskey), who must constantly inform Andres of where they are and wh...

'House' Recap: Perils Of Paranoia

November 29th, 2011 10:50am EST
house
“House” has definitely kept audiences guessing this season, alternating between mediocre episodes that seem beneath the long-running show and solidly clever episodes like last night’s “Perils of Paranoia.”

The episode focuses on a criminal prosecutor, Tommy (Vincent Spano), who collapses during a trial with symptoms of a heart attack. When he gets to Princeton-Plainsboro, the ER doctors determine it wasn’t a heart attack and Foreman determines it wasn’t a panic attack. The mysterious cause is right up House’s alley so he takes the case, intrigued by Foreman’s willingness to lie to a patie...

'House' Recap: Dead & Buried

house
This week’s episode of “House” was a bit of an oddity for the series. For starters, the episode did not open with the typical prologue involving the medical mystery House and his team would have to solve. Instead, it gets right to the crux of the story or, more precisely, stories.

House tells his team that their new case involves the death of a four-year-old boy due to kidney failure, something that should never happen to a child that young. At the same time, Foreman informs House that he and his team have a new case of a teenage girl, Iris (Madison Davenport), who is having inexplicable ...

'House' Recap: The Confession

House 'The Confession'
They’re back! Dr. Chase (Jesse Spencer) and Dr. Taub (Peter Jacobson) return to Princeton-Plainsboro Teaching Hospital on this week’s episode of “House” and they are a welcome addition to the anemic team of Park and Adams. And, just as before, House continues to relentlessly harass/torment Taub about his romantic past through trickery and mind games.

“The Confession” focuses on a man named Bob (Jamie Bamber) who is the pillar of his one gas station community. At a fair, he is being honored for his philanthropic efforts, all around good natured personality and personification of dedicated ...

'House' Has An Epic 'Fall From Grace,' Marries For Green Card

March 23rd, 2011 10:54am EDT
House Fall From Grace
This week, House torments Cuddy but can’t get a rise out of her, diagnoses a young, homeless man with an allergy to vegetables, and marries a multi-tasking alien so she can get a green card. Hey kids! You really CAN be allergic to vegetables!

In the state park, two precocious boys launch a model rocket. When the parts fall from the sky aflame, they discover a young, luxuriously bearded, homeless man (Chris Marquette) has had his arm set on fire. Someone’s getting grounded for this!

House arrives at his team’s meeting on a Segway, accompanied by a gorgeous brunette. He is unimpressed with ...

'House' Takes A Dive 'Out Of The Chute'

March 15th, 2011 10:17am EDT
House - Out of the Chute
Last week’s incredible “Bombshells” left the “House” writers with nowhere to go but down. Cuddy’s no longer dying, but House wishes he was, as the realization that his romance is over sinks in. Can House’s return to his bacchanalistic lifestyle ease his pain?

A young and healthy cowboy mounts a bull at a rodeo. He needs to stay seated for 8 seconds to beat the bull and win the challenge. The 8 seconds pass like minutes, as the bull furiously bucks and tries to throw the rider. The cowboy succeeds, and while the rodeo clowns lead the bull away, he faces the cheering crowd triumphantly. But ...

'House' Recap - 'Small Sacrifices'

November 23rd, 2010 5:56pm EST
House
It's been awhile since an opening scene on 'House' actually made me cringe, but this was one of them. The episode starts with a man carrying a cross, obviously doubling the crucifiction of Jesus Christ, and he actually is nailed to the cross. Cue wincing from all of the audience. I thought at first it would be a movie actor or something, but no, the patient of the week is a deeply religious man who crucifies himself since God saved his daughter from cancer. Which means it'll be another episode of House vs. God, and the patient will provide all kinds of handicaps for the doctors as they try ...

'House' Recap - 'Office Politics'

House Office Politics
'House' is back and Cuddy is still pressuring him to get a female doctor on the team. Is it a medical law that he has to hire one, or is she just really interested in women power? In any case, Cuddy hired a girl for him: a third year medical student who has three PhDs. A super genius, Masters, played by Amber Tamblyn. First, let's just get a few questionable things out of the way: medical school is tough, and third year in particularly is considered difficult. How is she supposed to complete her studies and be at House's beck and call? How is she any more qualified than some of the other N...

'House' Recap - 'Unplanned Parenthood'

October 19th, 2010 3:35pm EDT
House and Rachel
Last week House traded his massage therapist/former lover for the chance to be more in Cuddy's life and meet her daughter. He might just be regretting it this week! Cuddy asks him to babysit for Rachel when everyone else can't do it, and although he argues and whines, he agrees to do it in the end. This is why he spends most of the episode panicking with Wilson about Rachel and not paying much attention to his actual case. It's about another child who is dying, and instead of two years she's two days old.

The baby has complications right out of birth and we see it happen on a home video th...

'House' Recap - 'Unwritten'

Hugh Laurie and Amy Irving
Amy Irving guest stars in this week's episode of House, and it must be said that she does a fantastic job. Her character is a brilliant but disturbed children's book author, and she has written her final book. She speaks to the image of her main character like he is a real person, and puts a gun in her mouth. Before she can kill herself, she has a seizure and falls over. Her nurse calls 911, and House it turns out is a big fan of her series. It's the little funny details about House that always works for him, such as his love for soap opera and teen novels. Alice is the writer and House has...

'House' Recap - 'Selfish'

September 28th, 2010 3:01pm EDT
House Selfish
House is like a giddy schoolboy at times in this episode, and it's even more endearing then the over-romantic attitude from the last episode. He waits for Cuddy to get to the hospital and flirts with her, then gropes her as long as she'll allow it, and she tells him not to announce it the world until they go to HR. Aw, Cuddy, you wish. He immediately announces to his team and Wilson that he's sleeping with her, and it's almost sweet how excited he seems to be about it. He's snarky and acerbic as always, but you can tell that underneath House really is on the almost hopeful side. Naturally e...

'House' Recap - 'Now What?'

House Now What?
House is back, and it starts things off right by having brand new credits. Seven seasons in and they finally changed the credits! Jennifer Morrison is officially off them, with Peter Jacobson and Olivia Wilde added on. This has been driving fans crazy since the new cast members joined, so it's about time and it really freshened things up from the get go. This premiere is different in a lot of ways from a typical House episode, and that's just one of them.

First off, this doesn't exactly have much of a medical mystery, and it is much more focused on picking up where the last finale ended. T...

'House' Recap: 'Baggage'

May 11th, 2010 4:25pm EDT
House
One of the admirable things about the showrunners of House is that though it is a procedural, they enjoy playing with the formula and shoot certain episodes in a unique fashion. The first time they did this successfully was in season one with the incredible episode "Three Stories," which is still on the top five list of House episodes ever. This week's episode was a bit like that, playing with perspective and memory, and it is all about how Gregory House is going to probably have a breakdown soon. But he did that last year, you might cry. Yes, pretty much every year, actually.

'House' Recap: 'The Choice'

House Recap- The Choice
House is trudging along toward the end of its sixth season, and if they are going to start making sweeping changes in time for the season finale, they are definitely setting the groundwork for it now. Wilson might kick House out, Cuddy and House have a moment, and Thirteen's disease might be rearing its head for real. The latter was always an interesting query. While it wasn't her fault for having a genetic disease, it does pose a problem in terms of liability that she works on patients. With her hands eventually shaking out of control, she could accidentally split open a patient on an easy...

'House' Recap: 'Open And Shut'

House
I think I need to be more specific when I ask things of House, like less stories of Thirteen (which never happens since she's the new star of the show), and a spotlight on Taub. All of the other characters got their moment to shine or annoy so far, but the sardonic former plastic surgeon rarely does. It was exciting to think he'd get more attention this week ... until it turned out to be negative attention.

The patient of the week is a pretty woman who has a successful open marriage with her loving husband. Naturally this causes House to get obsessive and try to prove that there's no such ...

This week's episode of House was a little personal for yours truly because I used to work at a Renaissance Faire. They're fun places to visit and be a part of, and usually they have a great sense of humor about being made fun of. On the other hand, people can take it rather seriously, like the Patient of the Week 'Sir' William. He wants to impress the lovely 'Queen' of the Faire, and after winning a sword match he falls down with blood in his eyes. From there on his eyes look like a demon, which is a pretty cool trick, but one has to wonder if the actor had to wear scary eye contacts for it...

Has House run out of medical mysteries? That's how it has really felt for the show this season, what with the episodes focusing on certain characters like Wilson and Cuddy and this week's episode having no real medical factor to it. This is not necessarily a bad thing; after six seasons it is not a crime to try and shake up the show and try new things. Except that fans start watching a show because they already like how it is being done, and they don't always appreciate being forced outside of the box. A note: Hugh Laurie directed this episode!

A couple is relaxing in the aftermath of thei...

House is back, and considering the last episode was a little bit sleepy (sorry Cuddy!), it was great to see the show back to what it does best. It's interesting that House has kept with this whole no-vicodin thing, and in small ways the character development has really stuck for him. Is he still a jerk? Of course, but a slightly more sensitive jerk. Or he's just getting better at fooling all of us. This episode had a few callbacks to House's addiction, time in the hospital (it did exist!), and his revelation about his real father. Intrigue.

Oh yeah, and there was a patient or something too...

'House' Recap: Wilson Proposes, Patient Of The Week Dies & More

House
"House" sometimes has a unique theme that runs over the course of the full plot, and when all of the storylines within it are connected, it really comes out to be a shining episode. This week's story was all about lies between friends; some that are playful and some that are serious. House and Wilson played games with one another to prove yet again how they love the other best, the team all got pranked, and the patient of the week was lying to his friend ... for the best kinds of reasons. And when "House" decides to be both funny and tragic, it always manages to find a beautiful kind of bal...

'House' Season 6 Premiere: Too Rushed, Too Lifetime Movie Of The Week

House
The long anticipated and much hyped season premiere of "House" has come and gone, and it left behind a slightly dissatisfied air. While there are parts of this two-hour episode that are beautiful, poignant, and chock full of unexpected character development, it also has unnecessary segments and a lack of trust in the audience.

David Shore and company do this every year; they set up a giant cliffhanger ending and then wrap it up quickly as soon as the next season starts. Is it so much to ask for lasting impressions? This time next year, will the show even remember that House was once in ...

'House' Season Five Finale Shocks

House
Gregory House is a brilliant man, a genius, but in some ways he can be enormously stupid. He is always searching for his answers, for reason behind actions, and sometimes his obsession with everything fitting into a perfect little box means that he misses out on important things. Like, for instance, Kutner's depression leading to his suicide a few episodes ago or Cuddy's behavior in the season five finale of "House." After miraculously detoxing in one day last week, House and Cuddy finally ended up in bed together and he is still glowing the morning after. This might be the happiest and mos...

This week's episode of "House" had everyone talking, either in excitement or annoyance, because they foolishly gave away in the preview that House and Cuddy might be taking an important step in their cat-and-mouse dance. This is the way to bring up ratings on a show, obviously, but it made the entire episode be about 'ooo when will they hook up, is it now?' And of course it's not until the last scene, duh. Still, nicely done, show. Who even cared about the patient of the week?

Said patient is a pretty young ballerina whose lung collapses after her partner drops her during a routine. Cl...

House
So it's officially happened, "House" fans. Gregory House has completely lost his marbles. Sure he's tried to kill himself and isolated everyone who might love him by his biting wit and cruelty, but now the one thing he always had to count on is gone: his brain. At the end of last episode, House saw Amber. And not in the Sixth Sense "I see dead people" way. In the "my brain is probably melting" way.

Amber admits straight out she is a hallucination and product of his own mind. She is able to bring up deep memories of his and figure out the solution to problems. Basically, Amber is the pa...

So last week on "House" the writers decided to 'shock' everyone by having their happy-go-lucky character Kutner abruptly commit suicide. The background story is now known, with Kal Penn taking off from his acting career for one in the government instead, and the writers decided to use his exit in a dramatic way. After the dust settles, the show went back to its roots in a lot of ways. More of Cameron and Chase from the first three seasons, plenty of Wilson and House playfulness, and even a clinic patient. It worked well as an episode, but it did make Kutner's death a little anti-climatic. C...

An Unexpected Death Rocks 'House'

Well, the self-proclaimed "most dramatic episode of House yet" is over, and the responses are rolling in from both sides of the spectrum. Some people are angry, some are confused, some are horrified, and some are heartbroken. Honestly, considering all the melodramatic ads, the fact this tragic death came out of nowhere, and the fact they clearly were just pushing it for a "message" or to shock the audience ... "House" may be guilty of sensationalism. It wouldn't be the first time, but it's a little sad that a good character had to be victimized for it.

'House' Recap: 'Locked In'

House
One of the ways that "House" becomes more than just your average procedural is how, occasionally, the writers and directors like to be more surreal and artistic. Occasionally it does not work, but on the most part these episodes are a wide success and praised. The car crash last season with Amber's death is an example, or the second season with House being shot. This week's episode "Locked In" is about perspective and how people make their own prisons, and it guest stars Mos Def as the patient of the week. It is also somewhat based off the excellent movie The Diving Bell and the Butterfly.

'House' Recap: The Hermaphrodite

February 25th, 2009 1:46pm EST
House
Occasionally on "House" the writers will have two-part episodes or maybe a storyline that manages a full arc.

Stacy was one, so was Tritter (ugh) and even Amber, and yet those were all people for House to react to, and in this episode it is all about his reaction to himself. House finally has the chance to be happy, not unlike when his leg was 'fixed' after the shooting accident, but he classically chooses the wrong way. This was done far too fast, but that's probably due to the fact he's a side character in his own show now. Foreteen is all that matters to David Shore, apparently.
