 Dick SmothersSaturday Night at the World Release Date 196z Label Mercury Rating:  Dick Smothers' role as the straight man in the Smothers Brothers comedy duo extended to being the straight vocalist as well, and Saturday Night at the World is his bow as a solo singer. The Smothers sometimes included serious songs on their albums to showcase their harmonies (and recorded an entire album, Play It Straight, in that vein), so anyone who is familiar with those records will have half of an idea what this sounds like. Dickie's album goes beyond serious to spotlight his earnest, unaccompanied singing of adult pop songs written by well-known songwriters like Rod McKuen, Boyce & Hart, and the Beatles. The Smothers' longtime music coordinator, Mason Williams, also contributed a pair of decent songs, one of which (&"Saturday Night at the World") was the album's non-hit single. Dick's voice works well in tandem with his brother, but on his own he sounds too precious; a vocal chorus might have helped give the productions a little more presence without crushing his delicate sound.
