Happy Birthday to my bro, Scotty Mo - Scott Mosier! Mos did this self-portrait of us back when we met at the Vancouver Film School in 1992 and 23 years later, it's still how I see the nature of our relationship. Thank you for helping me make what are widely regarded as my best films, Mos - and for spending the last 8 years talking nonsense with me on SModcast. But most of all, thanks for being the first person I ever met who'd ask not "Why?", but rather "Why not?"

REST IN PEACE, BROTHER FROM ANOTHER MOTHER
My brother-in-law Matt Schwalbach, my wife Jen's only sibling, has passed away suddenly at age 41. Some of you may have met him at my birthday shindig years back (where this picture of Matt and his Mom Gail was taken). If you did, you remember him as a fun-loving card who liked to dance to hip-hop. I'll always remember meeting him for the first time and hearing him say he was happy to see me and his sister together, but would fuck me up if I ever got out of line. He then insisted I call him 'Pa. He was a good dude.
This has hurt our family like Hell, as you can imagine, and every heart in our house is broken - especially Gail's (no parent should ever have to bury a child). Not asking for you well-wishes or you prayers - I'm just sharing this to suggest you all take a moment to hug a family member or reach out to someone you haven't connected with in awhile. Life is short for all of us but tragically short for some. Farewell, Matt. I will miss you, 'Pa.
Tough 2015 so far...

Farewell actor/director/icon Leonard Nimoy! Thank you for decades of pop culture memories! You boldly go on ahead of us...

FAREWELL, FRIEND I NEVER MET
Actor, Director, and Pop culture icon LEONARD NIMOY has passed away. Known the world over as Mister Spock from STAR TREK, he was also a director (TREK III & IV and 3 MEN & A BABY), author, singer, amazing SIMPSONS guest, and someone who felt like a friend you'd just never gotten to meet yet. For me, he'll always be the voice of another television show that shaped my childhood: IN SEARCH OF. If you've never seen this 70's series about unexplained phenomenon, find it on YouTube. Leonard Nimoy's narration made me believe fantastical things could be true.
Farewell, Mister Nimoy. Boldly go on ahead of us...

A DREAM OF VANCOUVER
I'm in Vancouver, inhaling truth, staring at the skyline of this whale-art obsessed, west coast Canadian city. That's when it hits me: I was born here 23 years ago.
Not born physically; that happened in New Jersey nearly 45 years ago. No, this was the city of my REbirth. Vancouver was the first step on the road to becoming the fuck-stick I am today - the portly chap whose work some folks seem to know, or at least recognize because of the omnipresent hockey jersey. Young people in books and movies always dream of going someplace new - some foreign city where nobody knows them - and starting fresh. But I wasn't looking for a fresh start - I was looking for information and a basic skill set. And the Vancouver Film School was promising that - in 8 months instead of 4 years. I wanted to be a filmmaker and in my backwards mind, Vancouver was the key to that success. Folks said "We live near New York and NYU. Just go across the bridge to learn." But for some reason (maybe because I was a huge DEGRASSI fan), I zeroed in on Vancouver as the start of my destiny. A hero must journey and overcome tasks and obstacles the gods put in their way. To me, Vancouver was going to be my Odyssey.
It was in Vancouver that I met Scott Mosier - the man who'd help me make all my dreams come true. It was in Vancouver, I'd meet Dave Klein - the man who made all my dreams into actual cinema. It was in Vancouver that a boy became a man (or at least a man-child). And when we all left Vancouver, the three of us embarked on a journey that's lasted two decades and dozens of films between us (as well as thousands of hours of podcasts).
A long time ago, this city called me like a siren, yet I wasn't dashed on any rocks: I was given the gift of a new life. And as I sit here the morning after a Jay and Silent Bob Get Old live show (in which me and my spiritual brother sit around and talk about all those journeys I've been on since I went to film school here), I'm just so fucking thankful Vancouver called out to me at all, and that I listened to the alluring promises of her siren song. She wasn't lying. Vancouver will always be my favorite Canadian girl and I'm happy to be back inside of her (which sounds as dirty as I meant it).
23 years ago, I moved to this city for film school so I could learn how to make a movie. Instead, I learned how to make Clerks. And it all started with a dream; a dream of Vancouver.
