'Chaos' Advance Review

March 31st, 2011 3:00pm EDT
Chaos
For personal reasons, spy series have always intrigued me. And we've seen that humor can mix with espionage (see Burn Notice). So why is Chaos neither intriguing nor funny?

For one, it's just too cute. Like the main character, fresh-faced CIA newbie Rick Martinez (Freddy Rodriguez), the entire pilot is overeager. It's trying too hard to be funny, which has the effect of making it painfully not funny. For example, I gather that we're supposed to be amused that we're talking about Clandestine Administration and Oversight Services, because we can call it CHAOS, which is also the title o...

Star Of CBS's New Show 'Chaos' Ate A Real Scorpion

March 31st, 2011 11:43am EDT
Freddy Rodriguez stars in CHAOS
CBS’s new show Chaos is a comedy CIA adventure. Agent Martinez (Freddy Rodriguez) joins the Office of Disruptive Services and goes on crazy international adventures. In the very first episode, he has to eat a scorpion.

“It was a real scorpion,” Rodriguez said. “I had a slight anxiety attack, to be honest, and then I got over it. Then I asked [director] Brett Ratner to hold it. I would do it if he would hold it, and he refused, and we had an exchange. After a while I got over it, and it was fun.”

Consider it the first of many adventures in Chaos. “When I read the script, there were so ma...

'Ugly Betty' Season Three Finale

May 22nd, 2009 10:59am EDT
Ugly Betty
Well, here it is, people! It's the two-hour "Ugly Betty" Season Three finale. That means this recap is a two-for-one and that we've got a lot of ground to cover. Let's waste no time…

Now that former playboy Daniel Meade is a devoted husband, the media is going gaga for him (with the tabloids dubbing him "Prince Charming"). Even as he and Molly leave the hospital following her collapse, the paparazzi are waiting and ready to snap shots of the happy couple.

Having all this attention on Daniel annoys Wilhelmina to no end. She's still reeling over Claire's abrupt ascent to Vice-...

'Ugly Betty' Recap: 'In the Stars'

May 15th, 2009 11:14am EDT
Ugly Betty
Betty and Marc are finally looking to take their careers to the next level. Betty gets an excellent performance review from Daniel, and Marc gets an "adequate" review from Wilhelmina (which, by Willy standards, is good), but the positive reinforcement doesn't matter in either case. When Cal Hartley saved Meade Publications from financial ruin, part of the deal was that Meade would institute a hiring freeze. Consequently, Betty and Marc can't get promoted to editors at Mode, and they're majorly bummed.

As the Mode staff gathers to review spreads for the upcoming wedding issue, Wilhel...

'Ugly Betty' Recap: 'The Born Identity'

May 8th, 2009 12:55pm EDT
Ugly Betty
On last week's "Ugly Betty," DNA test results showed that baby William's mother is Wilhelmina and not Christina. This week we find Christina still devastated by that news. She has apparently been ditching work, leaving the ever-loyal Betty to cover for her. (An assistant can cover for a seamstress for days on end, and no one notices? C'mon, Mode.) Finally, the two gal pals meet for drinks and a round of darts (thrown at a picture of Wilhelmina's face), and Betty convinces Christina to come back to work.

But when Betty arrives at Mode the next day, there's no sign of Christina. Eve...

'Ugly Betty' Recap: 'Rabbit Test'

Ugly Betty
Oh, how the tables have turned on "Ugly Betty." Wilhelmina rides the subway to work, and Daniel takes the bus while Betty arrives in a limo (courtesy of her rich boyfriend). And yes, Wilhelmina and Daniel look about as traumatized by those experiences as you'd imagine.

Things have taken a turn for the worse at Mode. All the hope and promise that was established in the last episode has been tossed out the window. Come to find out, Mode's "Sex Issue" completely bombed, and the company is running out of viable financial resources. Daniel and Wilhelmina are now low on their personal c...

'Ugly Betty' Recap: The Sex Issue

March 20th, 2009 12:18pm EDT
Ugly Betty
Obvious plot devices are afoot on Ugly Betty. Ignacio leaves to take Justin camping with Elena and her nephews, which means... Betty and Hilda are free to run amok! In this episode, aptly named "The Sex Issue," it seems like almost everybody tries to get a little action.

First, we've got Hilda and Archie. They are embarking on their new relationship, but Hilda seems unenthusiastic overall. Then, there is Wilhelmina, who is missing Connor something terrible. Daniel and Molly try to broaden their comfort zones; and Betty and Matt toggle with the idea of taking their relationship to...

'Ugly Betty' Recap: 'A Mother Of A Problem'

March 13th, 2009 12:48pm EDT
Ugly Betty
It seems that in every "Average Person falls in love with Rich Person" story, Rich Person must have an evil parent that disapproves of Average Person. Thus, it goes without saying… Now that we know Matt is loaded, he must have a scheming, elitist mother who doesn't think Betty is good enough for her son.

Betty doesn't see this age-old cliché coming though - and Matt is partly to blame. We begin at Betty's house where Ignacio is cooking everyone breakfast on a Saturday morning. Matt comes over too, and, in the course of conversation, he remarks that his mom is dying to meet Betty. ...

'Ugly Betty' Recap: 'Sugar Daddy'

Ugly Betty
Well, the nation's financial crisis has officially come to "Ugly Betty." From companies in shambles, to potential federal bailouts, to families losing homes, this episode is not short on economic hardship.

Now that Connor has run off with millions of company dollars, Meade sits on the brink ruin. Betty heads off to work dressed in (almost) head-to-toe black, afraid of looking too cheerful when the company is in such dire straits. She can't help but be a little happy though. Matt sends her jellybeans and a balloon at work and calls her to make flirty small talk. They have dinner pla...

'Ugly Betty' Recap: Things Fall Apart

February 27th, 2009 10:11am EST
Ugly Betty
If you were among those who were happy that Daniel and Wilhelmina were finally in loving, fulfilling relationships… last night's "Ugly Betty" probably crushed your dreams, huh? The title of the episode pretty much says it all: Things fell apart.

It all begins with Betty making herself a Facebook page. (Really? A twenty-five-year-old New Yorker who is working in the media isn't already Facebooking?) Elena is in California, so Ignacio is moping around the house. Daniel is sick and has checked into a fancy hotel where he can watch cartoons and receive pampering. Wilhelmina is being ...

Okay, you romantics out there… It was only a matter of time before Betty got another love-interest, and he has come to us in the form of a would-be sports editor named Matt.

This epidode of Ugly Betty begins at a -er) and listening with total devotion. At the end of the presentation, Betty starts to approach the speaker - and that's when she is first stopped by Matt. He makes small talk, and Betty brushes him off. She steps forward to introduce herself to the speaker. She explains her background and how she longs to break into a magazine like The New York Review. Then the woman...

'Ugly Betty' Recap: The Courtship Of Betty's Father

February 13th, 2009 12:05pm EST
Ugly Betty
Wow. Nurse Elena is patient enough to make homemade pomegranate juice, and she's got Ignacio pumped to go for walks in 30-degree weather! What a gal. Elena, Ignacio, and Claire get major air-time in this ep, and it makes for one of the better "Ugly Betty" episodes this season.

We begin with Betty receiving a phone call from Claire Meade who has been caught stealing mascara from a drug store. Betty dashes off to foot the bill (for which the totally loaded Claire doesn't seem to have the cash). And when Betty later talks to Daniel, Claire's odd behavior starts to make more sense… ...

'Ugly Betty' Recap: Kissed Off

Ugly Betty
Okay, so Betty really is moving back to Queens. Now, you may be asking, "Ummm…Didn't she just move to the city at the beginning of the season?" And you would be absolutely right. I don't get the short-lived story arc either. Maybe it was too hard to keep her family involved in the plot when Betty wasn't living under their roof - or, maybe with the current economic recession, the Ugly Betty writers wanted to toss a bit of reality into the storyline. But I say, "Boooooo." Personally, I liked Betty living in the city. It was a good shake-up from the previous seasons.

Anyway, whil...

'Ugly Betty' Recap: Sisters On The Verge Of A Nervous Breakdown

When we last saw Betty, her dad had just been taken to the hospital - so it's no surprise that last night's "Ugly Betty" opened on a downer note. Ignacio has just had a quadruple bypass, which means that Hilda, Betty, and Justin are analyzing his every cough.

Betty goes crazy making lists to remind the fam of Ignacio's needs. But after two weeks in Queens, she has to get back to her life in Manhattan. She returns to her apartment where we find that Amanda is genuinely happy to see her roomie again - and a little confused that it was Ignacio, and not Betty, who had the heart attack...

'Ugly Betty' Recap: Dress For Success

Ugly Betty
So "Ugly Betty" is back from the holiday hiatus, and last night's ep quickly taught us three things:

1. Yes, Betty's YETI program storyline does have potential. Brilliant move to bring Marc in too - it gives the whole thing continuity.

2. Hilda is still getting random little subplots. This time, she is re-launching her salon as a salon-boutique fusion (aptly named "Hilda's Beautilities").

3. Love triangles (or is it a quadrangle in this case?) are hard to follow. I'm talking to you, Daniel/Molly/Connor/Wilhelmina.

We begin with Betty gushing over her idol Jodie Papadakis (pl...

'Ugly Betty' Recap: Bad Amanda

December 5th, 2008 12:21pm EST
Ugly Betty
One of the biggest (yet somehow subtle) "Ugly Betty" plot progressions may be taking place. Are Betty and Amanda…friends? Maybe this plot turn is predictable, but I still find it oddly satisfying.

The ep actually begins with Betty and Amanda at odds. Being her moocher-self, Amanda has Betty singlehandedly paying for all of their food, utilities, and rent. What's worse, when Amanda finally pays off a credit card, she "celebrates" with a shopping spree. Understandably, it's driving Betty bonkers. After some prodding from Hilda, Betty lays down the law and demands Amanda cover her h...

'Ugly Betty' Recap: When Betty Met YETI

November 21st, 2008 11:10am EST
Ugly Betty
Sure, there have been many good individual episodes of "Ugly Betty" this season… But the show's overall plot hasn't moved forward in any substantial way. Betty is still a plucky assistant for a flakey-but-decent-hearted playboy. That being said, last night's episode may have set the stage for future intriguing "Betty" plot developments.

We begin with the smug Nick Pepper returning to Mode for a casual visit. You may remember that Nick was Alexis' assistant (and Amanda's rival) way back when. Well, he left Mode, and through the program herself.

She goes to the YETI offices, ...

'Ugly Betty' Recap: Tornado Girl

Another week, another episode of "Ugly Betty" in which Betty winds up a flustered mess. With all the big wigs and editors at Mode leaving for an annual Editors Retreat, Betty convinces Daniel to let her do final approval for the upcoming issue. The cover theme is "Eye of the Fashion Storm," and she sees a big career opportunity in the works.

While Betty makes career inroads, Wilhelmina still pines after Connor - in her own diva way, of course. At the retreat, Connor speaks to the group about Meade's marketplace struggles. The company's magazines aren't pulling in enough money, and...

'Ugly Betty' Recap: Crush'd

Ugly Betty
So what was the best thing about last night's "Ugly Betty" ep? Hands-down, it was: Amanda, Amanda, Amanda. She got the best lines and shifted between catty, shallow, clueless, and then pretty darn sweet.

But anywho, the episode actually begins with a flustered Betty. She's still crushing on her neighbor, Jesse, and she's really cranked up the flirtiness dial. She waits in front of their building to give him an "extra" coffee that morning, and he casually gives her a demo of his band's latest songs. They make small talk and plan to get together at Betty's place later that night. ...

'Ugly Betty' Recap: Ugly Berry

Ugly Betty
So last night's "Ugly Betty" felt more like "Mean Girls 2" to me -- and not just because "Mean Girls" star Lindsay Lohan was making another guest appearance. Sure, Wilhelmina is almost always mean, but she's driven by career ambitions and power hungriness. Mark and Amanda are mean too, but they're driven by insecurities. But as I watched Kimmie mercilessly taunt Betty, I scratched my head. Why's Kimmie so mean? From what I can tell, Kimmie gets her kicks from picking on Betty Suarez, plain and simple. And the seemingly endless cycle of Kimmie tearing into Betty (for no really compelli...

TV On DVD Recommendation: 'Six Feet Under'

February 8th, 2008 2:08pm EST
Six Feet Under
A very eclectic recommendation for a very eclectic series that those without premium channels have only heard about. Alan Ball's ("American Beauty") landmark HBO series "Six Feet Under" seamlessly blended family drama and whimsical fantasy into the morose confines of a funeral home.

"Six Feet Under" tells the story of the Fisher family. They are a Southern California clan no more dysfunctional than the usual 21st Century family with a few wrinkles: they run a funeral home and their patriarch, Nathan Fisher, Sr., (Richard Jenkins) is hit by a bus in the series premiere.

As the fa...
