Interview: 'Don Verdean' Director Jared Hess On Comedy, Music &
Any long lasting filmmaker worth their cinematic salt eventually adopts a signature style. Be it strong visuals, savory dialogue or colorful characters, there’s usually a strong telltale that reveals the identity of the auteur. In the case of prolific writer/director Jared Hess it’s nothing short of creating a unique world most have never seen. With "Napoleon Dynamite" he showed us the small town joy of ligers and Canned Heat, in "Nacho Libre" the wacky wisdom of wrestling and with the hidden gem "Gentlemen Broncos" the importance of fighting back in the face of flamboyance. Now, still ...

Top Five Performances
Jason Coleman's Top Five Male & Female Performances

I am very happy for this particular acting "best of" list this year, mostly because notable films that didn’t make it to my Top Ten still had some memorable performances.  So even though movies like "American Hustle," "12 Years A Slave" and "Frances Ha" didn’t make the final film cut, the acting work within is lovingly highlighted here.  From oddballs to slaves, sassy ice cream truck workers to sexy hustlers here are my..."Best of 2013 - Top Five Male & Female Performances."

Forgotten Friday Flick - 'Moon'

4/19/2013 1:50pm EDT
With the space dud and copycat flick "Oblivion" hitting theaters this weekend it seems a perfect time to go back to the film it borrowed from most.  Only instead of a weak one and a half stars it’s five-star stuff...Welcome to Forgotten Friday Flick!  Not going back too far, we’re heading to 2009 for a little film that said so much.  An unusual outer space tale that focused much more on the human condition and less on mindless space spectacle.  Featuring a career making performance and announcing the arrival of a new and unique voice from the filmmaking front lines we’re gladly heading to.....

Review: 'Seven Psychopaths' Is The Must See Film Of 2012

10/12/2012 8:00am EDT
Seven Psychopaths
What does one little Shih Tzu named BONNY, Seven Psychopaths and one screenwriter suffering from writer's block have in common?

Everything...At least in my favorite film of 2012 so far.

Screenwriter, Marty Faranan (Colin Farrell) is way past his deadline on his latest screenplay. If that's not enough to cause the poor dude major stress, his passive-aggressive girlfriend, Kaya (Abbie Cornish) is about to walk out on him.

Lucky for Marty, his BFF sometime actor/full time dognapper, Billy (Sam Rockwell, in a tour de force performance) is sticking by him; actually a little too much.

In fact...

Q&A: Meet Ana de la Reguera

12/30/2011 11:45am EST
Ana de la Reguera
"You have to be very humble to start over," says Latin actress Ana de la Reguera when we connect very early on a Monday morning.

That's something she knows firsthand. She's just now arriving home after working through the night. It's not the kind of work schedule you'd expect for an actress who's considered "one of the most influential Latinas in the United States" according to Univision and who's been feted by - or on the cover of - various international publications like Glamour Mexico, Vogue Latinoamerica, and People en Espanol.

While all the accolades in Latin America are appreciate...

Review: Jonah Hill Deserves Better Than 'The Sitter'

12/10/2011 11:00am EST
The Sitter
Who would you rather watch in a movie about babysitting: a 1980s Elisabeth Shue or an overweight Jonah Hill? Let’s be honest, you’d probably pick Elisabeth Shue. And no, this argument is NOT based on looks. If you’ve seen his nuanced performances in “Cyrus” or “Moneyball,” then you’ll agree that Hill has outgrown crappy films like David Gordon Green’s “The Sitter,” regardless of former weight.

In an age of reboots and remakes, plenty of Hollywood scribes try to slyly spin an established idea or genre, by marketing it as new. However, rarely do they bring anything worthwhile ...

Review: 'Cowboys & Aliens' Is A Fun Romp That Lacks Heart

7/27/2011 9:00am EDT
Cowboys & Aliens
It seemed a great recipe for success: my favorite actor (Daniel Craig), one of film's iconic names (Harrison Ford), and one of my favorite directors (Jon Favreau). And it almost was. While Cowboys & Aliens is worth the price of admission, it's lacking in places that keep it from being the truly awesome film it could have been.

The biggest plus that the flick has going for it is that it defies all the usual claptrap of a summer blockbuster. Its action sequences are definitely big and loud, but not to the point of incoherence; with the exception of the final confrontation, it's relatively ...

Daniel Craig Got Butt Scabs While Filming 'Cowboys & Aliens'

4/29/2011 9:35am EDT
Daniel Craig
Daniel Craig was in agony riding horses for upcoming blockbuster "Cowboys And Aliens."

He explained, "You get over the saddle soreness, thankfully. I mean, after a week the scabs heal over. You think I'm joking? Why do you think cowboys walk so funny?"

Based on the graphic novel by Scott Mitchell Rosenberg, "Cowboys & Aliens" starts in 1800s Arizona, where the local cowboys, headed by gunslinger Zeke Jackson (Craig), and the indigenous Apache tribe have been feuding fiercely for quite a while. Their skirmish is interrupted, however, by the appearance of a spaceship, commanded by an alien...

New 'Cowboys & Aliens' Trailer Debuts; Looks Awesome (Watch It!)

4/15/2011 8:00pm EDT
Cowboys and Aliens
Gunslinger Zeke Jackson (Daniel Craig) can't remember his name, why the mysterious device on his arm was put there, and who (or what) put it there. So begins the first official trailer for this summer's blockbuster Cowboys & Aliens, which debuted during Thursday night's episode of American Idol.

The film, based on Scott Mitchell Rosenberg's graphic novel of the same name, takes place in 1800s Arizona, where a conflict between local cowboys and the Apache Indian tribe gets interrupted by alien visitors bent on enslaving humans. How in the world are 19th century humans supposed to compete wi...

Their skirmish is interrupted, however, by the appearance of a spaceship, commanded by an alien creature that's bent on enslaving the human race. Hilary Swank Is Being Gobbled Up By Her Dress

11/17/2010 3:00pm EST
Hilary Swank
Hilary Swank attended the 2nd Annual Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Governors Awards in Hollywood wearing a substantially poofy black and blue dress. It's too much! What do you think?

Hilary has been receiving glowing notices for her recent film "Conviction." Will she be an Oscar contender?

In the film, Betty Anne Waters (Swank) and her brother, Kenny (Sam Rockwell), survive bad parenting and poverty by leaning on each other for support. Kenny grows up to be something of a troublemaker, eventually being convicted for a murder he swears he didn't commit.

His sister believes...

Jennifer Aniston Plays A Dead Dog's Ghost

11/16/2010 11:15pm EST
Jennifer Aniston
Jennifer Aniston stunned the audience at a Broadway charity event on Monday night when she made a surprise cameo in short play "The B---h Downstairs."

The former "Friends" star appeared as the spirit of a dead dog in the production - one of six short plays written and performed in a day for the 24 Hour Plays on Broadway bash.

But theatergoers weren't the only ones surprised at Aniston's participation - castmembers including Kyra Sedgwick, Sam Rockwell and Nia Vardalos were also unaware of her cameo, reports

And Aniston only just made it in time for the show, after rushing ove...

Minnie Driver Is Looking Rather Hot These Days

10/30/2010 12:00pm EDT
Minnie Driver
Minnie Driver stars in the new film "Conviction" about a woman (Hilary Swank) who goes to law school after her brother (Sam Rockwell) is sent to prison for a crime he didn't commit. Minnie plays her only friend.

We're glad Minnie is back in the spotlight. Doesn't she look great?

Minnie also stars in the upcoming film "Barney's Version," a picaresque and touching story of the politically incorrect, fully lived life of the impulsive, irascible and fearlessly blunt Barney Panofsky.

Review: 'Two Jews On Film' Give Thoughts On 'Conviction' And Its All-Star Cast (Video)

10/12/2010 2:10pm EDT
"Conviction" directed by Tony Goldwyn, is the incredible true story of Betty Anne Waters, an ordinary working class mother of two, who embarks on an 18 year quest to free her brother, Kenny, who's sentenced to life in prison for a murder he didn't commit. Sam Rockwell as Kenny Waters gives one of his best performances to date and Hillary Swank, as his sister, Betty Anne Waters, makes us remember why she won two Oscars. Rounding out the excellent cast is Juliette Lewis, Minnie Driver, Melissa Leo, Peter Gallagher and Clea Duvall. "Conviction" is about one woman, who not only defies the o...

Trailer Talk: This Week In Movies - 'Jackass 3-D,' 'Conviction,' & More

10/12/2010 10:41am EDT
Robert De Niro and Edward Norton’s latest collaboration “Stone” turned out to be a serious disappointment. While both of the actors turn in decent performances in their respective roles, the film’s writing and directing are seriously lacking. “Stone” dabbles in several concepts such as morality, spirituality, and loyalty; however it does not pay enough attention to any of them to make a cohesive story.

Norton plays Stone, a convict seeking parole, who employs his attractive wife (Milla Jovovich) to seduce his parole officer (De Niro). Over the course of the film it’s never quite clear S...

Trailer Talk: This Week in Movies - 'Machete,' 'The American,' & More

9/3/2010 9:10am EDT
I apologize to my regular readers that this column is appearing much later than it normally does. This week I endured the hysteria many apartment dwellers suffer from around the beginning of September, known as moving. Now that I have my movies and the rest of my place unpacked though I’m ready to get back to business as usual.

I’m incredibly excited that this week Robert Rodriguez is finally bringing his “Grindhouse” creation “Machete” to theaters. It will be accompanied by George Clooney as a charming assassin in “The American,” the Justin Long/Drew Barrymore romantic comedy “Going...

Pixie Lott To Play The Virgin Mary

5/25/2010 1:30pm EDT
Pixie Lott
British pop star Pixie Lott has landed her first major movie role - replacing Britney Spears in Sweet Baby Jesus, a modern retelling of the Nativity story.

The Toxic hit-maker had been due to play the Virgin Mary in the new film, but walked away from the role with producers citing pressure from her family as her reason for quitting the project. Movie bosses have now cast 19-year-old Brit Lott in the role, opposite Sam Rockwell, Bette Midler and Kim Cattrall, who have all been linked to parts in the comedy, according to

Garfield director Peter Hewitt will helm the movie, wh...

'Iron Man 2' Is A Thoroughly Satisfying Sequel

5/7/2010 9:36am EDT
Iron Man 2
After Jon Favreau and Robert Downey Jr. blew away audiences with the box office smash “Iron Man” in 2008, fans almost instantly demanded a sequel to the metal hero’s first outing. Making the follow up to such a monumental action film though, seemed like an uphill battle when Favreau’s return as a director seemed uncertain and actor Terrence Howard was replaced by Don Cheadle as Tony Stark’s pal Jim Rhodes.

Thankfully Paramount got its priorities straight and decided to lure Favreau back for another movie. However an ambitious release plan for May 2010 meant a screenplay would be hastily ...

Tony Stark Crashes His Own Party In First 'Iron Man 2' Clip

4/5/2010 2:09pm EDT
Tony Stark certainly knows how to make an entrance. After unveiling that he was the man behind the Iron Man mask in the first movie, Tony is keen to show off his invention at the Stark Expo - so he crashes the stage as Iron Man.

As the clip shows, Iron Man has become something of a cultural phenomenon. There are dancers in Iron Man costumes and people in the crowd hold up Iron Man merchandise. And of course, AC/DC is blasting through the speakers.

Iron Man 2 is due in theaters May 7 and stars Robert Downey Jr., Don Cheadle, Scarlett Johansson, Gwyneth Paltrow, Sam Rock...
