Best Of 2013 - Top Five Male & Female Performances

January 3rd, 2014 12:15pm EST
Top Five Performances
Jason Coleman's Top Five Male & Female Performances

I am very happy for this particular acting "best of" list this year, mostly because notable films that didn’t make it to my Top Ten still had some memorable performances.  So even though movies like "American Hustle," "12 Years A Slave" and "Frances Ha" didn’t make the final film cut, the acting work within is lovingly highlighted here.  From oddballs to slaves, sassy ice cream truck workers to sexy hustlers here are my..."Best of 2013 - Top Five Male & Female Performances."

Ladies first this year!

Forgotten Friday Flick - 'Moon'

Moon
With the space dud and copycat flick "Oblivion" hitting theaters this weekend it seems a perfect time to go back to the film it borrowed from most.  Only instead of a weak one and a half stars it’s five-star stuff...Welcome to Forgotten Friday Flick!  Not going back too far, we’re heading to 2009 for a little film that said so much.  An unusual outer space tale that focused much more on the human condition and less on mindless space spectacle.  Featuring a career making performance and announcing the arrival of a new and unique voice from the filmmaking front lines we’re gladly heading to.....

Review: 'Seven Psychopaths' Is The Must See Film Of 2012

October 12th, 2012 8:00am EDT
Seven Psychopaths
What does one little Shih Tzu named BONNY, Seven Psychopaths and one screenwriter suffering from writer's block have in common?

Everything...At least in my favorite film of 2012 so far.

Screenwriter, Marty Faranan (Colin Farrell) is way past his deadline on his latest screenplay. If that's not enough to cause the poor dude major stress, his passive-aggressive girlfriend, Kaya (Abbie Cornish) is about to walk out on him.

Lucky for Marty, his BFF sometime actor/full time dognapper, Billy (Sam Rockwell, in a tour de force performance) is sticking by him; actually a little too much.

In fact...

Q&A: Meet Ana de la Reguera

Ana de la Reguera
"You have to be very humble to start over," says Latin actress Ana de la Reguera when we connect very early on a Monday morning.

That's something she knows firsthand. She's just now arriving home after working through the night. It's not the kind of work schedule you'd expect for an actress who's considered "one of the most influential Latinas in the United States" according to Univision and who's been feted by - or on the cover of - various international publications like Glamour Mexico, Vogue Latinoamerica, and People en Espanol.

While all the accolades in Latin America are appreciate...

Review: Jonah Hill Deserves Better Than 'The Sitter'

December 10th, 2011 11:00am EST
The Sitter
Who would you rather watch in a movie about babysitting: a 1980s Elisabeth Shue or an overweight Jonah Hill? Let’s be honest, you’d probably pick Elisabeth Shue. And no, this argument is NOT based on looks. If you’ve seen his nuanced performances in “Cyrus” or “Moneyball,” then you’ll agree that Hill has outgrown crappy films like David Gordon Green’s “The Sitter,” regardless of former weight.

In an age of reboots and remakes, plenty of Hollywood scribes try to slyly spin an established idea or genre, by marketing it as new. However, rarely do they bring anything worthwhile ...

Review: 'Cowboys & Aliens' Is A Fun Romp That Lacks Heart

July 27th, 2011 9:00am EDT
Cowboys & Aliens
It seemed a great recipe for success: my favorite actor (Daniel Craig), one of film's iconic names (Harrison Ford), and one of my favorite directors (Jon Favreau). And it almost was. While Cowboys & Aliens is worth the price of admission, it's lacking in places that keep it from being the truly awesome film it could have been.

The biggest plus that the flick has going for it is that it defies all the usual claptrap of a summer blockbuster. Its action sequences are definitely big and loud, but not to the point of incoherence; with the exception of the final confrontation, it's relatively ...

Daniel Craig was in agony riding horses for upcoming blockbuster "Cowboys And Aliens."

He explained, "You get over the saddle soreness, thankfully. I mean, after a week the scabs heal over. You think I'm joking? Why do you think cowboys walk so funny?"

Based on the graphic novel by Scott Mitchell Rosenberg, "Cowboys & Aliens" starts in 1800s Arizona, where the local cowboys, headed by gunslinger Zeke Jackson (Craig), and the indigenous Apache tribe have been feuding fiercely for quite a while. Their skirmish is interrupted, however, by the appearance of a spaceship, commanded by an alien...

Robert De Niro and Edward Norton’s latest collaboration “Stone” turned out to be a serious disappointment. While both of the actors turn in decent performances in their respective roles, the film’s writing and directing are seriously lacking. “Stone” dabbles in several concepts such as morality, spirituality, and loyalty; however it does not pay enough attention to any of them to make a cohesive story.

Norton plays Stone, a convict seeking parole, who employs his attractive wife (Milla Jovovich) to seduce his parole officer (De Niro). Over the course of the film it’s never quite clear S...

After Jon Favreau and Robert Downey Jr. blew away audiences with the box office smash “Iron Man” in 2008, fans almost instantly demanded a sequel to the metal hero’s first outing. Thankfully Paramount got its priorities straight and decided to lure Favreau back for another movie. However an ambitious release plan for May 2010 meant a screenplay would be hastily ...
