'Saturday Night Live' Recap: Chris Rock And Prince Take Center Stage At NBC Studio 8H

November 2nd, 2014 7:02am EST
Prince snl
In the past year, “SNL” was widely criticized for its lack of diversity, hired a new black cast member following that public pressure, debuted its first black Weekend Update cast member, and from the writer’s room brought on another black cast member. So an episode hosted by Chris Rock seemed poised to be the most head-on examination of race on “SNL” in years, or even decades. While that element was present, it was not really any more so than it has been in the past couple of years. Overall, in fact, this edition ended up like most episodes of the past couple of years: consisting of most...

Trailer Talk: Ridley Scott's 'Prometheus' Could Be This Summer's Next Big Blockbuster & More

June 4th, 2012 1:02pm EDT
Prometheus
Arriving in theaters this week are Ridley Scott’s highly anticipated sci-fi vehicle “Prometheus,” the silly computer animated sequel “Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted,” the coming-of-age comedy “Lola Versus,” the indie time travel comedy “Safety Not Guaranteed,” the period piece drama “Bel Ami,” the family relationship dramedy “Peace, Love, & Misunderstanding,” and Todd Solondz’s drama “Dark Horse.”

Unfortunately my pick from last week, “Snow White and the Huntsman,” was plagued by bad acting, lackluster action scenes, and farfetched concepts even for a fairy tale. Not only was it diff...

Tribeca Notes 4/26: Rob Lowe's 'Knife Fight' A Success, '2 Days In New York' To Premiere

Rob Lowe
The premiere of Rob Lowe's Knife Fight last night was a rousing success. It was well-written, funny, and smart. One of the more enjoyable experiences I've had screening thus far at Tribeca.

If you’re looking to rush the ticket line tonight at the Tribeca Film Festival, there are a pair of powerful documentaries playing that are worth your time. the first is Planet of Snail, the story of a blind/deaf Korean man who happens to be an aspiring writer and his tiny, handicapped wife. The most heartwarming scene of all the films playing at Tribeca might just be in this film, when the couple mu...

Review: Adam Sandler's 'Grown Ups' Is Juvenile

June 24th, 2010 1:49pm EDT
Grown Ups
One of my greatest fears has been confirmed by seeing Adam Sandler’s “Grown Ups.” My favorite cast of “Saturday Night Live” from the 90s is starting to lapse into Eddie Murphy syndrome: they have no problem with making crappy family comedies just to cash paychecks.

Watching this poor excuse for something funny made me embarrassed for them. I expected a few lowbrow laughs from these folks who capitalized it after their stint on “SNL.” I hoped perhaps though that these seasoned comedians had something better up their sleeves.

“Grown Ups” stars Adam Sandler, Chris Rock, Rob Schneider, Kev...

Thursday night I had the opportunity to see the rock n roll biopic “The Runaways” about the female 70s rock band featuring Joan Jett and Cherie Currie. The film effectively establishes the era with all its drug-addled and grungy glory. It paints the rise of the band as a whirlwind experience that ends almost as quickly as it starts. This concept is well-conveyed through Floria Sigismondi’s Dutch angles and spinning shots.

Where the film falters however is giving its characters enough depth for the audience to relate to them. They do not work hard enough to show us the girls are from...
