May 25th, 2014 2:00pm EDT
The Americans Season 2 Keri Russell wigs main
The second season of FX's Russian-spies-undercover-in-the-80s drama The Americans has come to a close. And what a season! I won't go into specific spoilers here but last night's finale revealed who killed Elizabeth (Keri Russell) and Phillip's (Matthew Rhys) fellow suburban spies way back in the premiere. And in other developments, Paige might be getting a whole different type of education next season. *shiver*

All due respect to talented thespian Keri Russell, but the real stars of the show are those hilarious wigs she wears for her undercover ops. To quote a number ("Wig In A Box") from...

Matthew Rhys Looks Back On Season 2 Of FX's 'The Americans'
FX's The Americans has been charging along all season long, and tonight the Cold War spy drama is poised to go out with a bang. Before the finale, we sat down for a second time with series star Matthew Rhys to look back on season two and maybe even a little ahead to season three.

How has he continued to brilliantly add layer after layer to the character of Philip Jennings in season two? Matthew told us it's a team effort. "It feels, to me, it’s an amalgamation of a number of things," he said. "Sometimes writers take from what they see and steer a character in that way. The evolution can be...

Matthew Rhys Reveals Secrets Of 'The Americans' Season 2
FX's critically acclaimed The Americans is back tonight, and before we get into another season of Cold War intrigue, BFTV had the chance to chat with star Matthew Rhys - who plays the Russian spy we know as Philip Jennings - to ask him about sophomore spoilers and the one thing about the show that still makes him nervous. SPOILER ALERT: This interview contains discussion of themes in the second season of The Americans. If you don't want to know anything going into tonight's premiere, don't read this interview until after you've seen the episode.

"This season, as opposed to last season wher...

To see what we could figure out about the hit show, we enlisted series creator Joe Weisberg and his co-writer Joel Fields to answer some questions for us. (You can also check out our interview with executive producer Graham Yost.) Here's what we learned from Joe and Joel.

Firstly, you're not going to get them to name a favorite installment from the show so far. "We particularly like the first thirteen episod...

FX's 'The Americans' Preview: Spy Drama With More Questions Than Answers

January 30th, 2013 11:57am EST
The Americans
FX is bringing viewers back to the Cold War with their new original series The Americans, which is the channel's attempt at an espionage thriller. It's an ambitious attempt that should draw in spy buffs, but this freshman series has a few steps more to go before it completes its mission of winning over audiences.

When it comes to their original drama series, FX never does anything lightly, and The Americans is no exception. It does its best to ground us in the period, opening in 1981 and moving forward from there, as we're introduced to Philip Jennings (Matthew Rhys) and his wife Elizabeth...

Literary Characters=Oscar Love

March 19th, 2009 10:28am EDT
The Edge Of Love
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has a long history of awarding actors who portray real people. For example: Jamie Foxx as Ray Charles (Ray), Charlize Theron as Aileen Wuornos (Monster), Hilary Swank as Brandon Teena (Boys Don't Cry), Forest Whitaker as Idi Amin (The Last King Of Scotland), Helen Mirren as Queen Elizabeth II (The Queen), and most recently Sean Penn as Harvey Milk (Milk).

Lesser recognized is the Academy's favor for actors who play literary figures or exist in their spheres. It's quite possible the stars of the recently released The Edge of Love, the st...

Celebrity Serial Daters

John Mayer
In Hollywood, the dating circle seems to be so small that most celebrities share boyfriends and girlfriends and swap spit left and right. The time between significant others seems to get shorter and shorter as well. Last week's tabloid cover may show a huge celebrity breakup and the week after it will feature the same exes and who they're already dating next. And although this isn't the case with all of Hollywood, there are a few we like to call Celebrity Serial Daters.

John Mayer uses his smooth rock star status to make the ladies fall for him, but seems to break their hearts just a...

Gay Characters On TV? No Big Deal

August 7th, 2008 8:35am EDT
Ellen Degeneres
Remember a few years ago when entertainment magazines hailed the coming of gay television? With hits like Queer Eye for the Straight Guy and Will & Grace drawing millions of fans on both sides of the gay fence it seemed like a veritable gay revolution was at hand. Then "Will & Grace" stopped being funny, "Queer Eye" ceased being entertaining, and Ellen became the straightest lesbian to ever host her own talk show.

Queer Eye

Was the gay television boom dead, or had it retreated into the closet waiting for a brand new coming out party? Where have all the dude loving dudes gone...

What Might Have Been: A Different Perspective on 'Brothers & Sisters'

January 10th, 2008 9:51am EST
Brothers & Sisters
I used to think that there was no crisis facing the Walker family that they would not rise to face. I was wrong. It seems that during the circus that is the writers strike, ABC quietly ousted show creator Jon Robin Baitz from "Brothers & Sisters."

I found this out not in a news story, but rather in an article Baitz posted on the Huffington Post. In his article he described his life in Los Angeles, his work on the show, the compromises that were made and the eventual parting of ways between Hollywood and himself. What got me thinking was his mention that if "Brothers & Sisters" was on ...
