Stars Turn Out To Honor Carl Reiner

George Clooney and Bonnie Hunt heaped praise on acting legend Carl Reiner on Thursday as he was feted in Hollywood with a lifetime achievement award.

The 89 year old was the guest of honor at the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences' An Evening Honoring Carl Reiner event, and a host of big names turned out to celebrate the star.

Dick Van Dyke, Hunt and Lily Tomlin were among the guests who were treated to a film montage looking back at Reiner's career, and they spoke fondly of their pal, who created sitcom Head of the Family, which became The Dick Van Dyke Show.

It’s almost impossible to believe, but it’s true: ‘The Dick Van Dyke Show’ premiered on CBS 50 years ago next month. Yes, it was half a century ago that America was first introduced to the Petries’ living room and the office of Alan Brady’s writing staff.

What’s even more amazing is that the show still holds up better than ever. ‘The Dick Van Dyke Show’ was one of the first sitcoms to depict a husband and wife who actually had the hots for each other – even though they supposedly slept in separate beds. 'Dick Van Dyke' Writer Sem Denoff Dies At 83

Sam Denoff, a prolific TV writer who won two Emmys for 'The Dick Van Dyke Show' and who created 'That Girl,' has died at age 83. He had reportedly suffered from Alzheimer's Disease.

Denoff started in TV writing for shows like 'Your Show of Shows' and 'McHale's Navy' before he struck gold with writing partner Bill Persky. Carl Reiner recruited them to write for Van Dyke's show, and the pair became favorites in the latter half of the show's run. This Sunday April 25 at 9 PM EST, the eighth annual TV Lands awards will air and be hosted by everyone’s favorite tool man, Tim Allen. The award show will honor comedic legends Mel Brooks and Carl Reiner as well as the cast of Glee; reunite the cast of Everybody Loves Raymond; and pay tribute to the late Farrah Fawcett.
