Spotlight On Films In Which Technology Has Gone Awry: Our Grim Future Awaits

September 23rd, 2009 12:43pm EDT
Surrogates
As we look forward to the future, we are hopeful that technology and the overall standard of living will continue to improve. Many films set in the distant or even in the more immediate future paint it as a grim place where our dependence on technology has blinded us to our own humanity.

We are reminded that technology yields great power and that great power can corrupt our souls. Films portraying this version of our future are meant to provoke commentary about the ethical dilemmas the characters face and to help steer humanity in a more thoughtful direction.

With the movie "Surroga...

Best Film & TV About Alien Invasions

August 17th, 2009 2:39pm EDT
X-Files
For centuries human beings have considered the world beyond Earth and wondered if there was life outside of what we know. There have been essays, books, movies, television, and plenty of conspiracy theories about the existence of aliens or extraterrestrial life.

In the past 50 years or so pop culture has been fascinated by this idea and what would happen if the alien nation found its way to our Earth. Would they be like Star Trek, some hostile and some friendly to humankind? Or would they be like Aliens and plan to tear the flesh off our bones?

With ABC bringing back a TV series abo...

'Angels & Demons' Is A Complete Mess

May 18th, 2009 2:41pm EDT
Angels and Demons
Dan Brown's novels have a single extraordinary trick to them that play out in both film adaptations, "The Da Vinci Code" and "Angels and Demons." Essentially, the movies (and books, respectively) are tours of Europe's most famous landmarks given at break-neck speed and cloaked in a cheesy dinner murder mystery that gives them an edge most museum or Vatican tours don't have. In that context, "Angels & Demons" is a success. In all others however, it fails miserably.

Langdon is a symbolism professor called upon by the Vatican to unravel the symbols that point to the location of four card...

Spotlight On The Best Big-Screen Lawyers

April 16th, 2009 10:00am EDT
Chicago
Lawyers have been around basically as long as the law has been present - even back in Ancient Rome and Greece there were men who would stand up and speak for the laws they made. Over the years the role of the lawyer has altered a few times, but it always comes back to truth, justice, and honesty ... or the exact opposite of those ideas.

Lawyers have gained a rather negative persona, either due to them wanting too much money or doing it for their own ego rather than what is right. Film often interprets reality, and so lawyers on screen are usually portrayed as either virtuous, helpful,...

Sometimes a single actor makes a film, and sometimes too many egos don't fit on the same screen, but when you find a group of talented actors who manage to make it look like they're having the time of their lives, then the audience wants to be a part of the magic. Whether He's Just Not That Into You, starring Drew Barrymore, Justin Long, Jennifer Connelly, Ben Affleck, Jennifer Aniston, Kevin Connolly, Ginnifer Goodwin, Bradley Cooper, and Scarlett Johansson will be one of those remarkable collaborations remains to be seen. Keanu Reeves
You either love him or hate him: Keanu Reeves has been called anything from "yummalicious" and "OMG!! HOT! HOT! HOT!" to "a talentless, limp little douche of a man with all the charisma of a sack of onions." (Those are all actual quotes, people.)

On the occasion of his new film's release ("The Day the Earth Stood Still), Starpulse takes a look back at the best and worst of Keanu's career.

The Day the Earth Stood Still
The fall of 1951 gave world a number of things: the first oral contraceptive, the first episode of "I Love Lucy" and Bobby Thomson hit the "shot heard round the world" winning the National League pennant for the New York Giants. These are things that resonate with a countless amount of people, but mean nothing to the legions of the world's nerds. To science fiction geeks, September 1951 gave the world one thing: Robert Wise's The Day the Earth Stood Still.

In the film, the inhabitants of Earth face a dire choice. Throw down their weapons and live in peace, or have the entire planet des...

graphic novels
With graphic novels becoming widespread with the arrival of big movies such as "300," "Sin City," and "V for Vendetta" that gathered huge audiences, new interest arose in the stylistic hard cover comics. A graphic novel is a type of comic book usually aimed at adults with a long and complicated story that eventually does have a distinct ending. It can also be a collection of comic books bound into a single collection under a particular story arc. In any case, the world is becoming more enamored with comic book as blockbusters like "Iron Man" and "The Dark Knight" keep coming along, but ther...

Spider-Man 2
It seems every year we are inundated with dozens of sequels to films we love and those we've already forgotten about. But what are the best? What are the worst? What shouldn't have been made and what beat the original? Answers to those questions are below, but before a list of the best and worst sequels is determined a few ground rules must be established.

1. The Sequel Cannot Be Planned. There are plenty of movies where the sequel is somewhat planned (I highly doubt anybody wasn't thinking sequel during Spider-Man) but some movies are part of a planned series from day one. The mo...
