Tony Randall & Jack Klugman
Odd Couple Sings
Release Date 1973
Label London
Rating:

Neal Hefti's classic opening theme to television's The Odd Couple is an instrumental, and good thing -- series stars Tony Randall and Jack Klugman are terrible singers, yet that didn't stop London from commissioning The Odd Couple Sings. This is a classic so-bad-it's-good celebrity record, made all the more bizarre by the decision to record Randall and Klugman as their respective characters Felix Unger and Oscar Madison. That means transcendentally weird moments like the tuneless Oscar covering Carly Simon's &"Your So Vain" to fire potshots at the famously fussy Felix, and to his credit Klugman gives his all, delivering a wretched performance worthy of the drunkest Japanese businessman in the world's tackiest karaoke bar. Randall is marginally better, carrying his partner's dead weight through Broadway-styled material like &"Johnny One-Note" as well as novelties including &"When Banana Skins Are Falling." In other words, it's once again left to Felix to clean up Oscar's mess. Jason Ankeny, Rovi
