'How I Met Your Mother' Cast Knew The Show's Ending Since Series Began

4/1/2014 11:41pm EDT
How I Met Your Mother
The cast of How I Met Your Mother has known how the series was going to end since the show's beginning back in 2005.

Producers revealed the end of the story to stars Josh Radnor and Lyndsy Fonseca, who play star Josh Radnor's children on the series, when scenes for the end of the series were shot at the beginning in order to ensure that the series came full circle.

"(Creators) Carter (Bays) and Craig (Thomas), are so smart. They had actually planned the ending during our pilot," says star Cobie Smulders, who plays Radnor's love interest on the show. "They shot some scenes with the two chi...

'How I Met Your Mother': The Legend Is Complete

4/1/2014 3:15pm EDT
How I Met Your Mother
How I Met Your Mother aired for a final time Monday night. I have said many times that HIMYM was in many ways a victim of its own success. The first two seasons of the show are amongst the best in sitcom history. The show thrived in a traditionally tough timeslot, and became the mainstay of the CBS comedy Monday lineup. Creators Craig Thomas and Carter Bays realized that they were basically going to have the slot as long as they wanted. They had written a story that had a clearly defined beginning and end, but they now needed a ton of filler to bridge the gap. When CBS lured the cast a...

'How I Met Your Mother' Series Finale: Was It Legendary?

4/1/2014 7:43am EDT
How I Met Your Mother
"How I Met Your Mother" completed its legendary nine-season run with a series finale that was lovingly poignant without losing its trademark humor. The series finale zoomed more than fifteen years in the future, chronicling major milestones in the gangs' lives who promised to always be there for the "big moments" but still grew apart.

Marshall and Lily (Jason Segel and Alyson Hannigon respectively) indeed went to Rome and had two more children. Marshall finally achieved his dreams of becoming a judge (aka Judge Fudge" or "Fudge Supreme"). Due to the demands of Robin...

Celebrities That Turn 40 In 2014

1/1/2014 11:00am EST
Leonardo DiCaprio
Happy New Years everyone and welcome to 2014!

It's that time of year for our annual "who is turning 40" this year extravaganza. Truth is, lots of people do, but we'll just keep it to the more famous variety of peeps in the world.

Doing some simple math, 40 years ago would make it 1974.

For those of you who weren't around that year, the mantra of 74' and the world was energy crisis -gasoline was a little hard to get and lines at gas stations were blocks long. Because of the crisis, our then President, Richard "Tricky Dick" Nixon imposed a 55 MPH speed limit on highways. That wasn't the re...

'How I Met Your Mother' Review: Cristin Milioti Returns In 'The Lighthouse'

11/5/2013 9:08am EST
Sweeps month kicked off at CBS with How I Met Your Mother’s eighth episode of their final season.  “The Lighthouse” picked up Saturday morning of the weekend of Barney and Robin’s wedding.  At brunch, there is still some hostility between Robin and Barney’s mother Loretta.  It is important to Barney that they bury the hatchet, but he doesn’t know how to get them to make up.  They continue to fight through breakfast, resulting in a ridiculous fight about who makes better scrambled eggs.

Lily was still dealing with the bomb that Marshall had dropped on her.  Marshall had accepted a judgeship...

'How I Met Your Mother' Premiere: Season 9 Feels Fresh But Has Its Challenges

9/24/2013 8:31am EDT
Future Ted and 'The Mother'
Carter Bays and Craig Thomas have annoyed me for the last four years as show runners and head writers of How I Met Your Mother. A once clever series devolved into a convoluted mess with each renewal and 24 episode cycle. The characters, once lovable, became increasingly loathsome. The structure of the series, a mix of flash-backs and flash-forwards woven in with the present, allowed for really creative storytelling in the early seasons, but the structure became a crutch for the series. The storytelling got lazier, and the characters were broad caricatures of what they once were. I've enjoye...

Top 5 Things You Need to Know Going Into Season 9 Of 'How I Met Your Mother'

9/22/2013 3:00pm EDT
How I Met Your Mother
How I Met Your Mother is returning this Monday for its ninth and final season.  I'm pretty sure it's for real this time.  You may remember that season eight was reportedly going to be the final season, but since ratings were at all time highs, CBS went into negotiations with show creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas to do another season.  All of the actors' contracts were up at the end of season 8, and it appeared that Jason Segel, who said he wanted to focus on his movie career, was the biggest roadblock.  As soon as Segel signed on, everything else fell into place.  Whether you've missed...

'How I Met Your Mother': Who Wants To Be A Godfather?

10/16/2012 10:47am EDT
at maclarens
With Marshall and Lily in new parent mode, the gang had been a little out of sync lately. They had instructed the others to not bother them with anything that wasn’t “an 8 out of 10 or higher.” So when Ted was having problems with Victoria and Robin was having problems with Nick, they decided to keep it to themselves.

When Marshall and Lily finally got some free time, they had a new view of the world as a scary and dangerous place. They decided that with Marvin to think about now, it was time to draft up a will. The answers to most questions came easy, but the biggest of all was who w...

'How I Met Your Mother': Lily And Marshall Search For A Nanny

10/9/2012 10:50am EDT
robin, lily, and marshall
How I Met Your Mother returned last night for the second episode of what is looking increasingly likely to be the final season of the show. Co-creator Craig Thomas told TV Guide, "We wanted the season premiere to feel momentous because this could be the beginning of the last chapter. There are negotiations happening, but I don't know how that's gonna go and I don't know when I'll know if there'll be a Season 9. Carter [Bays] and I are really writing the season as if it's the last season and this is how we would start it." Last week’s premiere gave us the big reveal that Ted would meet hi...

'How I Met Your Mother' Season 8: 5 Spoilers You Need To Know

9/4/2012 1:00pm EDT
Cast of How I Met Your Mother
“How I Met Your Mother” is hands-down one of my favorite shows. I own all of the seasons on DVD, and still have about 35 episodes saved on DVR. So it pains me to say that season 7’s finale was a little underwhelming as we saw Barney prepare to marry Robin instead of the fabulous Quinn (played by the even more fabulous Becki Newton) and Ted (Josh Radnor) motor off into the sunset with The One Who Got Away, Victoria, on her wedding day. Nevertheless, Marshall and Lily finally brought little Marvin into the world, and the show seemed to be inching closer to revealing the elusive mother. Th...

TV Report Card: Grading 10 Season Finales

5/25/2012 12:07pm EDT
Revenge Cast
Season finales are essentially the Hollywood version of final exams. They have to shock and awe and entice viewers into returning after four arduous months of dead air. From births and deaths to break-ups and OMG-worthy shockers, I’m grading 10 season finales. The SPOILER ALERT is implied.

Reckoning, Revenge’s thrilling season ender saw Emily Thorne (Emily VanCamp) not only confront her father’s killer in a satisfying and strangely sweet final fight, but surrender to her feelings for ruggedly handsome bartender, Jack. It wouldn’t be “Revenge” without infuriating twists and double-c...

New 'HIMYM': Barney Makes Ted Take The Broath

3/20/2012 11:10am EDT
After a short break How I Met Your Mother returned last night with an all new episode written by the show’s co-creators, Carter Bays and Craig Thomas. The last episode left us with Ted (Josh Radnor) in a transition. Robin (Cobie Smulders) told him that she didn’t love him, and as a result she moved out of the apartment above MacLaren’s. Ted, sensing that he needed a change too, gave the apartment back to Marshall (Jason Segel) and Lily (Alyson Hannigan) and began looking for a new place.

Of course the other big storyline of the last few episodes was Barney (Neil Patrick Harris) and Quin...

'HIMYM': Ted And Robin Back Together?

2/21/2012 9:30am EST
Earlier in the season, older Ted (voiced by Bob Saget) alluded that a lot of changes were coming for him and the gang, but none of it could happen until the feelings were resolved between him, Barney, and Robin. Victoria told him that this thing the three of them were doing isn’t going to work. Before he could move forward, Ted had to go back to the beginning one more time.

At the end of last week’s episode he professed his love for Robin once again. “No pressure,” Ted says, “Just let me know what you think.” Before anything can really be hashed out, Robin is whisked away on a busine...

Martin Short Is 'The Burning Beekeeper' On New 'HIMYM'

2/7/2012 8:12am EST
How I Met Your Mother returned with a new episode last night, kicking off sweeps month for CBS. Expectations are running high, with HIMYM in its highest ratings season ever. Things got a little more crowded on Monday nights as the second season of The Voice moved into its new timeslot across the dial on NBC. The Peacock went for the bold move of premiering the singing reality competition right after Super Bowl XLVI, and over 40 million people stuck around after the game to watch. It will certainly be one of the more interesting ratings showdowns of the season.

Last night’s episode, “Th...

Victor Garber, Jane Krakowski & Josh Radnor Unite For Musical

12/3/2011 1:36pm EST
Jane Krakowski
Victor Garber, Jane Krakowski and Josh Radnor will band together to stage a musical reading of the comedy "She Loves Me."

"Alias' star Garber, "30 Rock" beauty Krakowski and "How I Met Your Mother" actor Radnor will perform the one-night-only benefit show at Roundabout's Stephen Soundheim Theatre in New York on Monday to raise money for the venue's non-profit organization.

Radnor tells Entertainment Weekly, "I worked with a vocal coach out in L.A. for a few weeks before I got to New York. My trick is the trick that everyone knows - work really hard and prepare. That way you have something...

Top 5 'HIMYM' Shocker Endings

11/28/2011 11:38am EST
himym season 1
HIMYM fans are still coming down off of last week’s shocker ending, and with a rerun airing tonight (last year’s thanksgiving episode in most areas) I thought this was the perfect opportunity to reflect upon HIMYM’s best surprise endings. Here are my top 5.

5. Bachelor Party, Season 2 Episode 19.

Barney can often times be a nuisance, but every once in a while he shows how much his friends really mean to him. After Barney completely ruins Marshall’s bachelor party, Marshall asks whether Barney even wants the wedding to happen. Then Lily reveals that when she was out in San Francisco, it...

SPOILER ALERT! Bomb Dropped On New 'HIMYM'

11/22/2011 9:48am EST
cobie smulders
Monday’s new HIMYM, “The Rebound Girl,” began with Lily and Marshall preparing to once again host Thanksgiving dinner and ended with a huge revelation.

Marshall and Lily had recently been given Lily’s grandparents’ house on Long Island. They were now forced to decide to either sell it or move. Their original idea was to sell, but after spending some time in the house, their Manhattan apartment seemed a little cramped. They decide to host Thanksgiving out in Long Island and give everyone a chance to check out the place.

Meanwhile, a forlorn Ted and recently rejected Barney were bemo...

Barney And Robin Kiss On A New 'HIMYM'

11/8/2011 9:33am EST
the gang
In Monday’s all new HIMYM, the gang recounts the story of surviving Hurricane Irene. The storm blew through the east coast summer of 2011.

Kevin (Kal Penn) asks why there is a sign outside MacLaren’s that reads, “Absolutely NO Boogey Boarding,” and it prompts Ted to begin retelling the story. Ted (Josh Radnor), always thinking ahead, had rented a car and offered to drive everyone out to his fixer upper in Westchester. Barney (Neil Patrick Harris) asks the gang to swing by his apartment first to pick up a few things. When they get there, Barney says the storm is not a big deal and the...

Katie Holmes Guest Stars As The 'Slutty Pumpkin' On New 'HIMYM'

11/1/2011 9:22am EDT
Katie Holmes guest stars as the Slutty Pumpkin
The promise of the return of the Slutty Pumpkin made this year’s Halloween episode of HIMYM one of the most anticipated episodes in a long time. HIMYM continues to pull in the A-list guest stars with Katie Holmes appearing as Naomi, the girl Ted ran into at a party 10 years earlier. She was wearing a strategically carved pumpkin costume, and forever became known as the Slutty Pumpkin. Ted lost her number, and since then he has been returning to the same party every Halloween hoping that he would run into her.

Ted ends up finally tracking down Naomi after recognizing the costume she wore...

New 'HIMYM' - Are You Dating Your Mom?

10/25/2011 10:43am EDT
barney stinson
In Monday’s all-new HIMYM, Barney (Neil Patrick Harris) realizes that his new girlfriend Nora (Nazanin Boniadi) is a lot like his mother. Will it be a deal breaker?

Last week Robin’s (Cobie Smulders) new boyfriend Kevin (Kal Penn), who is a therapist, pointed out that the group had a lot of issues. These included Ted (Josh Radnor) and Marshall’s separation anxiety, Robin’s trust issues, Barney’s pathological lying and denial, and the whole group’s generally abnormal social behavior. My apologies to my thousands of fans for not getting around to doing a recap for last week’s episode (del...

Robin Dates Kal Penn On A New 'How I Met Your Mother' - 'Field Trip'

10/11/2011 10:17am EDT
cobie smulders
Is it weird to date your therapist? That is the question that Robin (Cobie Smulders) and the rest of the gang wrestled with on an all new HIMYM.

Kal Penn returned as Robin’s court appointed therapist, Kevin. He said that he could not continue as Robin’s therapist because he was “moving to Alaska.” When Robin later runs into Kevin, he admits that he ended it because he was attracted to her, and he was not allowed to date his patients. Realizing that they are attracted to each other, Robin and Kevin continue to see each other while not calling it dating.

Meanwhile, Ted (Josh Radnor) w...

Kal Penn Works On Robin's Issues In New 'HIMYM' - 'The Stinson Missle Crisis'

10/4/2011 9:27am EDT
cobie smulders
HIMYM returned last night with “The Stinson Missle Crisis.” The fourth episode of the new season pulled out some big name guest stars and cameos, but did not meet the intensity and hilarity of the first three.

Kal Penn made his first appearance on television since leaving his role of Kutner on House to work for the Obama administration. He appeared as Robin’s (Cobie Smulders) court appointed therapist. It turns out that Robin had assaulted a woman. In typical HIMYM fashion, we find out what happened first and then are told the story of all of the events that led up to that point.

Victoria Returns On An All-New 'HIMYM'

9/27/2011 9:27am EDT
ashley williams
How I Met Your Mother’s seventh season continued last night with “Ducky Tie.” I was excited because this episode was written by show creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas, and they did not disappoint.

Also exciting was the return of Ashley Williams as Victoria, Ted’s (Josh Radnor) ex-girlfriend. The two had a passionate love affair in season one, but when she took a culinary art fellowship in Germany the long-distance was too much of a strain on the relationship. Ted ended up cheating on Victoria with Robin (Cobie Smulders), and he had felt really bad about it ever since.

To break th...

'HIMYM' Makes A Legendary Return With 'The Best Man'

9/20/2011 10:39am EDT
HIMYM 'The Best Man'
How I Met Your Mother returned last night with a pair of brand new episodes. This marks the seventh season of the CBS sitcom, and with the end of Entourage, the Charlie Sheen meltdown, and Steve Carell saying goodbye, HIMYM is now the longest running sitcom with its original cast currently on television. I actually liked the second episode better, but lets start from the beginning.

“The Best Man” was written by HIMYM’s co-creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas, and showed a lot of the style we’ve grown to love. It started out with a flash forward to Barney’s wedding. He was showing sign...

'Happythankyoumoreplease' On DVD & Blu-ray June 21

6/18/2011 7:20am EDT
Josh Radnor makes his debut as a writer and director with the independent comedy drama "Happythankyoumoreplease" in which a handful of people riding the gap between their late 20s and early 30s navigate the sometimes tricky path of adulthood in New York City.

Sam (Radnor) is a struggling writer who has trouble with long-term relationships; one day while on the subway, he meets Rasheen (Michael Algieri), a young boy who has been abandoned by his parents. Sam takes the boy in, which gives him a preview of parenthood but also proves to be more complicated than he expected. Sam is infatuated ...

Season Finales: The Good And The Bad

5/31/2011 1:22pm EDT
The Good Wife
Another television season has come and gone with the usual blitzkrieg of shocking deaths, double-crosses, surprise pregnancies, and aggravating cliffhangers. It was a varied batch of season finales: some were amazing; others were lackluster; and a few finales left me counting the jumping sharks. I can’t watch every finale, but here’s a sampling of the awesomely good and the appallingly bad.

Let’s break it down.

The Good:

“The Good Wife” CBS

Julianna Margulies is fantastic as Alicia Florrick, the scorned wife trying to rebuild her life after her husband’s famed infidelities. The seco...

'HIMYM' Season Finale: Who Will It Be?

5/17/2011 9:55am EDT
the gang
Monday night’s sixth season finale of How I Met Your Mother may not have been the funniest of the season, but it certainly gave us some high drama and exciting reveals.

Earlier this year HIMYM got the rare double renewal, ensuring that the show will be returning this fall and the fall of 2012 as well. Last night’s episode was the second straight one written by show creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas. They have brought us some of the greatest episodes of the series. They have always said that they know the beginning and the ending and have been bridging the gap in between.

New 'HIMYM': Ted and Zoey Split

5/10/2011 10:25am EDT
bays and thomas
While it was already pretty clear that Zoey (Jennifer Morrison) was not the mother, it became official in last night’s episode, “Landmarks.”

I was very excited when I heard that HIMYM’s creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas wrote this episode. Ted is said to be loosely based on Bays and Marshall (Jason Segel) is said to be loosely based on Thomas. Bays and Thomas (pictured right) have written many of the best episodes of the series. They have shown their talents with classics like “The Pineapple Incident” and “The Playbook” and powerful episodes like “Last Words” when the gang attend...

'HIMYM' Recap: John Lithgow Is Back And Does Not Disappoint

4/19/2011 10:25am EDT
John Lithgow and Neil Patrick Harris star on HIMYM Mondays 8/7c
I enjoyed John Lithgow’s performance as Barney’s father, Jerry, and was excited to hear that he would be returning for this week’s episode of HIMYM. He did not disappoint.

Last night’s episode, “Hopeless,” was the second of five straight weeks of new episodes to close out the season. It started off with a flashback to Jerry visiting Barney (Neil Patrick Harris) for the last time before disappearing for the rest of his childhood. Giving some perspective into why Barney is the way he is, Jerry says remember to always to stay awesome and then did a magic trick before leaving.

Jerry tried...
