Shutter Island
2009 is starting to wrap up with a few big blockbusters left for the Christmas season, but now it is time to look forward into 2010 to see what's coming up. Take a look at the films you'll be wanting to buy tickets for in early 2010!

January (in order of release date)

Nine Actors Who Played Real-life Baseball Players

October 19th, 2009 11:00am EDT
Gary Cooper
With the baseball playoffs in full swing, it's time to take a look at actors who have stepped up to the plate and taken on the challenge of portraying a real-life hardball legend. While there have been many great movies and portrayals about diamond life (Kevin Costner in "Bull Durham" springs to mind), a select few actors have hit the field in fact-based baseball films.

Gary Cooper as Lou Gehrig

In the revered biopic "The Pride of the Yankees," Cooper steps into the shoes of the Yankees icon and deftly handles all the off-the-field developments (diagnosis of ALS, "Luckiest Man Alive"...

Trailer Talk: This Week In Movies - 'Surrogates,' 'Pandorum' & More

September 22nd, 2009 10:27am EDT
Surrogates
I'm curious to see the reception of "Surrogates," at the box office this week. People I have spoken with seem to have mixed opinions about whether they think the movie will be enjoyable or not.

Their interest level in the movie seems to be linked to which trailer they have seen. Trailer 1 appears to be rather bland and doesn't do much to entice the viewer. Folks who have seen Trailer 2 however, agree that it does a better job of selling the concepts present in the film, as well as emphasizing Bruce Willis' struggle without his surrogate.

In addition to the sci-fi thriller "Surr...

Battle for Terra on DVD
Battle for Terra is a thrilling sci-fi animated film featuring the voices of Luke Wilson, Evan Rachel Wood, Dennis Quaid, Danny Glover, and James Garner, blasting its way onto DVD and Blu-ray September 22nd.

A visually stunning, action-packed tale for animation fans of all ages, this theatrical wide release received rave reviews from critics. Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times hailed it as "bewitchingly animated, nicely stylized" USA Today called it "captivating" and "ambitious" and San Francisco Chronicle deemed it "as thrilling as any original Star Wars trek." In addition, "Battle...

Review: 'G.I. Joe: The Rise Of The Cobra' Is Pretty Damn Entertaining

August 7th, 2009 2:23pm EDT
G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra
When comparing "G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra" to that awful fellow Hasbro monstrosity "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen," "Joe" plays out like a goddamn Federico Fellini film. Coherent plot, well established characters, discernible action sequences (Also: no racist robot caricatures, so there's that). It's always kind of fun to write a negative review - especially when the studio doesn't screen it for said writer, early. Unfortunately, for those purposes, "G.I. Joe" is kinda, sorta ... good (!?) This wasn't the way it was supposed to be. THIS WASN'T THE WAY IT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE!

Trailer Talk: This Week In Movies 7/26 - 8/1

August 3rd, 2009 11:08am EDT
G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra
Over the weekend, I caught Judd Apatow's new film "Funny People" starring Adam Sandler and Seth Rogen. "Funny People" lived up to my expectations; it's funny at points with an appropriate seriousness that's present throughout the movie.

I thoroughly enjoyed the bond that Sandler and Rogen's characters form over the course of the film. Rogen plays a socially awkward comic struggling to find his way, and Sandler is a jaded celebrity trying to make meaning out of his tragic situation. I was surprised by how unlikable Sandler's character is at points, revealing that his problems in life a...

Similar Story Smackdown: Which Hollywood Flicks Came Out On Top?

April 27th, 2009 11:57am EDT
Saving Private Ryan
So, have you seen this year's comedy about an overweight, overzealous, loser-y mall cop who takes his job way too seriously and is hopelessly in love with a fellow shopping center employee? If you're not sure whether I'm referring to January's hit Paul Blart: Mall Cop or the newest Seth Rogen comedy Observe and Report (in theaters now), don't be too hard on yourself: Both flicks have eerily similar plotlines. This isn't the first time two films with the same subject matter have been released within a year of one another; Hollywood has a talent for redundancy (see: recycling and ripping off)...

Workplace Romance: Costars Who Fell In Love

Mr. and Mrs. Smith
It is widely acknowledged that workplace romances are a definite no-no; clearly, some famous actors and actresses didn't get the memo. From classic romantic duos Bogey/Bacall and Spencer/Tracy to contemporary pairings like "Bennifer" and "Brangelina", since the inception of cinema, thespians have taken on-set relationships from reel-life to real-life.

Ellen Page's 'Smart People' Only as Scholarly as Zealous Senior in High School

April 11th, 2008 9:55am EDT
Smart People
(HollywoodChicago.com) – I’m flummoxed. I know “Smart People” was supposed to be comedic drama with a splash of romance. Instead, I have been misled. It’s not a comedy. It’s not a tragedy. It’s not even a tragicomedy.

“Smart People” is a blandly scripted “poor me” with an attempt at a plot and some glitzy Hollywood names thrown in for good box-office measure.

While I know this was no “Juno,” I couldn’t help cursing first-time writer Mark Poirier for not taking a much-needed page – or a full-fledged course of mentoring – from Oscar-winning “Juno” inker Diablo Cody.

“Smart Peo...

February Movie Preview Review: 'Strange Wilderness,' 'Fool's Gold' & More

February 1st, 2008 9:41am EST
Fool
I'm a fan of previews. There are few joys in this world to 20 minutes of sitting back, relaxing, and forgetting what movie you actually came in to see.

Previews have become something of a mini movie festival, featuring loud music and explosions, two-second snippets of sex, and great one-liners. Most importantly, this festival is instrumental in deciding what movies most people will see for the next month.

Here's the million dollar question: why isn't anyone reviewing these previews? Look no further, here is your one-stop shop for preview reviews. This month we're looking at Str...

15 Football Films Worth Watching

This is a bittersweet time of year for all football fans - the season is over, and the Super Bowl peaks over the horizon. Then comes the pain of football withdrawal. What will we do on Sunday afternoons and Monday nights? We've compiled a list of movies that we hope will ease the misery.

Some football films have rousing, rough-and-tumble-scream-at-the-TV football action. This is the "Football Factor." They're just like watching a game with two great defenses. Others have an interesting football story. This is the "Heart Factor." Often there are a lot of both factors in each movie. Her...
