George Peppard was one of a group of talented players MGM had under contract in the l960's: Paula Prentiss, Richard Chamberlain, Jim Hutton, Yvette Mimieux and George Hamilton. Of the group, Peppard reached lasting fame. MGM caerfully groomed these stars and for Peppard he was touted as a strong actor, and indeed MGM assigned Peppard Spencer Tracy's former bungalow on the fabled old MGM lot in Culver City. At his home studio he made "Home From The Hill" Vincente Minnelli's strong drama of the Texas Hill country and "The Subterreans" with Jim Hutton. Peppard's biggest MGM hit was the great Cinerama Western "How The West Was Won" but his greatest fame came on loan outs to Paramount for "Breakfast At Tiffany's" and "The Carpetbaggers" both acclaimed hits. Peppard also went on loanout to Columbia for Carl Foreman's anti war movie "The Victors". Peppard returned to MGM to co star with Sophia Loren in Carlo Ponti's rousing World War II film "Operation Crossbow" about the commandos trying to destroy Nazi rockets. Peppard was billed above the title with Loren. MGm gave it a big push and it was a big success.

Peppard left MGM and its cocoon of guiding Peppard's career and soon he was starring in less than stellar productions. His most famous role is likely as the star of TV' The A-Team'.

I met him in London after he finished starring in Love Letters with Elaine Stritch and he was a fine Gentleman.

Peppard was once married to his Carpebaggers Co Co Star Elizabeth Ashley.
