10 Celebrities Who Traded Showbiz For Politics

3/10/2016 1:44pm EST
10 Celebrities Who Became Politicians
When Donald Trump first announced his candidacy for the 2016 GOP nomination for president last summer, plenty of people on both the right and the left brushed it off. The billionaire businessman might know how to close a business deal or make a good reality TV show but what does he really know about running a country?

But here we are in 2016 and Trump's run for president shows no signs of slowing down. Perhaps we should have seen this coming. After all, while Trump may have made his money in real estate, the true strength of the Trump brand has been his ability to keep the masses entertain...

Kal Penn Gets Historical In 'Bhopal: A Prayer For Rain'
Kal Penn has proven himself to be an unpredictable actor. He broke through in Hollywood playing the stoner Kumar in Harold & Kumar Go To White Castle, spent two years as Dr. Lawrence Kutner on House, and had a recurring role on How I Met Your Mother. Whatever he's cast as, he always delivers - something that's even more significant with his current project, the film Bhopal: A Prayer for Rain.

We spoke with Kal on Friday to discuss making the film, what he's proudest of about his performance, and if it's important to him that his projects have something to say.

He plays Motwani in Bhopal, ...

Another New TV Series Cancelled: 'We Are Men' Axed After 2 Episodes

10/10/2013 8:20am EDT
We Are Men
Poor ratings has resulted in another TV cancellation for the 2013-14 season. "We Are Men" has been pulled from the air after just two episodes.

Critics haven't been kind to the show, which stars Jerry O'Connell, Tony Shalhoub, Chris Smith and Kal Penn, calling it "lazy" and "outdated" when it premiered last month.

The comedy centered on four single guys living in a short-term apartment complex who unexpectedly find camaraderie over their failed romances.

O'Connell confirmed the cancellation on Twitter, writing: "We Are Men cancelled. What a fun ride. Love those guys."

The CBS show is th...

Harold And Kumar To Star In Adult Swim Cartoon

5/20/2013 6:07pm EDT
Harold and Kumar
Harold and Kumar are getting animated for a new TV series.

John Cho and Kal Penn's stoner comedy characters have been featured in three raucous films, and Adult Swim has approved a pilot and one episode to air on their network.

Cho revealed the news while doing an interview for his new film, Star Trek Into Darkness. He told Collider, "Right now there's a deal that was struck for an animated show on Adult Swim, and to my knowledge they're writing episode one at the moment. They have written the pilot and are writing episode one, so as soon as I get the details you literally will be the fir...

Who The Celebrities Are Voting For In The 2012 Presidential Election

9/5/2012 12:07pm EDT
Ted Nugent
Some celebrities are more outspoken than others, especially when it comes to politics. However, that doesn't mean that a majority of them aren't active in supporting who they think should win the 2012 presidential election. Here's a selection of celebrities that have made their choice clear:

Ted Nugent: Mitt Romney. The outspoken Republican supporter told his Twitter followers while Romney was running for the GOP nomination, "after a long heart&soul conversation with MittRomney today I concluded this goodman will properly represent we the people & I endorsed him."

Barack Obama Releases New DNC Promotion With Harold & Kumar
Barack Obama released a video via YouTube on Monday to gear up for the upcoming Democratic National Convention this week. For those that don't know, Kal Penn will be hosting the coverage of the 2012 DNC this week. The video shows Barack Obama on the phone with someone while stressing the seriousness of his duties.

"Hey, this is Barack," President Obama says. "Listen, I need to know if you're on board. Okay, good. Because I'm counting on you. Everybody is. We have to get this right. So there's a lot at stake here. Just remember that I'm trusting you on this and I'll see you then."

Eva Longoria & Kal Penn Join Obama's Re-Election Campaign

2/22/2012 3:21pm EST
Eva Longoria
Eva Longoria and Kal Penn have been selected to serve as national co-chairs on President Barack Obama's re-election campaign.

The politician first took office four years ago and now, with the 2012 presidential election quickly approaching, he has named 35 ambassadors to help rally voters as he strives to win another White House term.

The Obama administration announced the complete list of advisers on Wednesday and Desperate Housewives star Longoria and funnyman Penn were among the consultants and politicians.

A statement from Obama's campaign manager, Jim Messina, reads, "The presi...

Hugh Laurie Confirms 'House' Will End After This Season

2/8/2012 11:24pm EST
Hugh Laurie will hang up his cane as cranky doctor Gregory House in May after confirming hit medical drama House will end this season.

In a joint statement from Laurie and executive producers of the show David Shore and Katie Jacobs, released to the media on Wednesday, the trio announced House will not be back for a ninth season.

The press release reads, "The decision to end the show now, or ever, is a painful one, as it risks putting asunder hundreds of close friendships that have developed over the last eight years - but also because the show itself has been a source of great pride to e...

Check Out 'A Very Harold And Kumar Christmas' On DVD, Blu-ray & Download Feb. 7

2/4/2012 6:51am EST
A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas
Christmas gets green as pot-smoking pals Harold and Kumar reunite in "A Very Harold and Kumar Christmas," a hilariously hazy holiday adventure set six years after the events of the previous film.

It's been a long time since Harold (John Cho) and Kumar (Kal Penn) escaped from Guantanamo Bay, and these days they're just not as tight as they used to be. But as they each prepare to celebrate Christmas Eve with their new best buds, Kumar receives a very special delivery that should have gone to Harold.

Always the dutiful friend, Kumar does his best to see that the package reaches its in...

'House' Recap: Better Half

1/25/2012 12:13pm EST
After a long winter break, “House” is back with one of the best episodes of this season. Season 8 of Fox’s once great medical drama has been decent overall, but not nearly as exciting as earlier seasons. “Better Half,” though, is a perfect example of why loyal fans continue to watch House’s antics week after week, year after year.

The episode focuses on a thirty-something man named Andres (Ivo Nandi) who is suffering from early onset Alzheimer’s disease. Suffering with him is his loving and devoted wife, Natalie (Melanie Lynskey), who must constantly inform Andres of where they are and wh...

Brittany's 'The Voice' Blog: 'Sing You Home' For The Holidays!

12/20/2011 11:00am EST
The Voice
Here's the latest on and around NBC's The Voice: Team Blake's Xenia releases Sing You Home, while Adam Levine and Cee Lo Green have something to say about the postal service...

Xenia has a new EP just in time for the holidays. Sing You Home contains four new songs from the Team Blake semifinalist. You can download the EP here.

While the record may be short, it's an outstanding sampling that shows how much the 17-year-old has come out of her shell and continues to improve since her time on Team Blake. She sounds miles away from the 'shy girl' whose nerves got the better of her in battle ...

'House' Recap: Perils Of Paranoia

11/29/2011 10:50am EST
“House” has definitely kept audiences guessing this season, alternating between mediocre episodes that seem beneath the long-running show and solidly clever episodes like last night’s “Perils of Paranoia.”

The episode focuses on a criminal prosecutor, Tommy (Vincent Spano), who collapses during a trial with symptoms of a heart attack. When he gets to Princeton-Plainsboro, the ER doctors determine it wasn’t a heart attack and Foreman determines it wasn’t a panic attack. The mysterious cause is right up House’s alley so he takes the case, intrigued by Foreman’s willingness to lie to a patie...

'House' Recap: Dead & Buried

11/23/2011 9:53am EST
This week’s episode of “House” was a bit of an oddity for the series. For starters, the episode did not open with the typical prologue involving the medical mystery House and his team would have to solve. Instead, it gets right to the crux of the story or, more precisely, stories.

House tells his team that their new case involves the death of a four-year-old boy due to kidney failure, something that should never happen to a child that young. At the same time, Foreman informs House that he and his team have a new case of a teenage girl, Iris (Madison Davenport), who is having inexplicable ...

Barney And Robin Drama On A New 'HIMYM' - 'Tick Tick Tick'

11/16/2011 9:52am EST
barney stinson
It looked like Robin and Barney were opening up new chapters in their lives. Robin (Cobie Smulders) was in a relationship with Kevin (Kal Penn), and things seemed to be going really well between Barney (Neil Patrick Harris) and Nora (Nozanin Boniadi). However, at the end of last week’s episode Barney and Robin made out in the back of a cab. I, for one, was kind of upset about this turn of events because I was really rooting for the Barney-Nora relationship, and didn’t know what this meant for their future.

The opening of Monday’s episode, “Tick, Tick, Tick,” revealed that the two went b...

Review: 'A Very Harold And Kumar 3D Christmas' A Welcome Contact High

11/12/2011 11:34am EST
This is not the zaniest part of the movie
When the first Harold and Kumar came out in 2004, it was sort of a breath of fresh air from the Apatow comedies that were popular at the time. It was a road picture, it was irreverent, it was determined to make you laugh in any way it could. The manic energy of the two leads, and the fact the entire movie was about making it to a white-castle because your stoned, was the sort of silly concept that really captured the clouded imaginations of stoners everywhere.

The beauty of the Harold and Kumar films is the way in which they find their heart. In the first, their trip to White Castle was a ...

Q&A: Todd Strauss-Schulson Talks 'Harold And Kumar 3D,' Emerson Ties, And Wafflebots

11/7/2011 11:25am EST
Harold and Kumar 1
The famous stoner duo Harold (John Cho) and Kumar (Kal Penn) are back! They return to theaters this weekend with their 3D holiday extravaganza “A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas,” which reunites the estranged friends for a night of holiday hijinx, after Kumar accidentally burns down the prized Christmas tree belonging to Harold’s father-in-law (Danny Trejo).

Recently I had the pleasure of talking with the film’s director, Todd Strauss-Schulson, who is making his feature length directing debut with this comedy. I sat down with the Emerson College alum at a local Boston bar, on a nice sun...

Trailer Talk: This Week in Movies - 'A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas,' 'Tower Heist' & More

10/31/2011 2:00pm EDT
Harold & Kumar 3D - Tower Heist
Last week I watched two classic horror movies: “The Thing” and “The Exorcist.” Watching John Carpenter’s “The Thing,” just further reminded me of how crappy the recent prequel was. With its spooky score, good looking practical effects, and more fully formed characters, Carpenter’s story is far superior. If you were thinking about seeing the prequel, skip it, so you can stay in and watch Carpenter’s version.

Even though I didn’t find myself grossed out by any of the nasty behavior of the possessed little girl (Linda Blair) in “The Exorcist,” I really appreciated the eerie music, the sp...

New 'HIMYM' - Are You Dating Your Mom?

10/25/2011 10:43am EDT
barney stinson
In Monday’s all-new HIMYM, Barney (Neil Patrick Harris) realizes that his new girlfriend Nora (Nazanin Boniadi) is a lot like his mother. Will it be a deal breaker?

Last week Robin’s (Cobie Smulders) new boyfriend Kevin (Kal Penn), who is a therapist, pointed out that the group had a lot of issues. These included Ted (Josh Radnor) and Marshall’s separation anxiety, Robin’s trust issues, Barney’s pathological lying and denial, and the whole group’s generally abnormal social behavior. My apologies to my thousands of fans for not getting around to doing a recap for last week’s episode (del...

Robin Dates Kal Penn On A New 'How I Met Your Mother' - 'Field Trip'

10/11/2011 10:17am EDT
cobie smulders
Is it weird to date your therapist? That is the question that Robin (Cobie Smulders) and the rest of the gang wrestled with on an all new HIMYM.

Kal Penn returned as Robin’s court appointed therapist, Kevin. He said that he could not continue as Robin’s therapist because he was “moving to Alaska.” When Robin later runs into Kevin, he admits that he ended it because he was attracted to her, and he was not allowed to date his patients. Realizing that they are attracted to each other, Robin and Kevin continue to see each other while not calling it dating.

Meanwhile, Ted (Josh Radnor) w...

Kal Penn Works On Robin's Issues In New 'HIMYM' - 'The Stinson Missle Crisis'

10/4/2011 9:27am EDT
cobie smulders
HIMYM returned last night with “The Stinson Missle Crisis.” The fourth episode of the new season pulled out some big name guest stars and cameos, but did not meet the intensity and hilarity of the first three.

Kal Penn made his first appearance on television since leaving his role of Kutner on House to work for the Obama administration. He appeared as Robin’s (Cobie Smulders) court appointed therapist. It turns out that Robin had assaulted a woman. In typical HIMYM fashion, we find out what happened first and then are told the story of all of the events that led up to that point.

A man who attacked actor-turned-White House aide Kal Penn at gunpoint last year has pleaded guilty to felony charges of robbery and assault with a deadly weapon.

Marcellus Chambers pounced on Penn in the early hours of April 20th, 2010 in Washington, D.C. and stole the star's wallet and two cell phones.

The actor, who was working as a liaison officer for President Barack Obama at the time, filed a police report immediately after the incident and Secret Service agents became involved when it emerged one of the phones taken in the robbery was the property of the U.S. Government.

Kal Penn

Law enforcement sources tell a man carrying a gun approached Penn at approximately 1.20am local time and took his wallet and other personal property. Injuries were not reported as WENN went to press. Penn filed a police report with local authorities and an investigation has been launched, according to the website.

'House' Season Five Finale Shocks

5/12/2009 4:28pm EDT
Gregory House is a brilliant man, a genius, but in some ways he can be enormously stupid. He is always searching for his answers, for reason behind actions, and sometimes his obsession with everything fitting into a perfect little box means that he misses out on important things. Like, for instance, Kutner's depression leading to his suicide a few episodes ago or Cuddy's behavior in the season five finale of "House." After miraculously detoxing in one day last week, House and Cuddy finally ended up in bed together and he is still glowing the morning after. This might be the happiest and mos...

'House' Recap: 'Under My Skin'

5/5/2009 4:18pm EDT
This week's episode of "House" had everyone talking, either in excitement or annoyance, because they foolishly gave away in the preview that House and Cuddy might be taking an important step in their cat-and-mouse dance. This is the way to bring up ratings on a show, obviously, but it made the entire episode be about 'ooo when will they hook up, is it now?' And of course it's not until the last scene, duh. Still, nicely done, show. Who even cared about the patient of the week?

Said patient is a pretty young ballerina whose lung collapses after her partner drops her during a routine. Cl...

'House' Recap: House Divided

4/28/2009 4:36pm EDT
So it's officially happened, "House" fans. Gregory House has completely lost his marbles. Sure he's tried to kill himself and isolated everyone who might love him by his biting wit and cruelty, but now the one thing he always had to count on is gone: his brain. At the end of last episode, House saw Amber. And not in the Sixth Sense "I see dead people" way. In the "my brain is probably melting" way.

Amber admits straight out she is a hallucination and product of his own mind. She is able to bring up deep memories of his and figure out the solution to problems. Basically, Amber is the pa...

'House' Recap: 'Saviors'

4/15/2009 5:01pm EDT
So last week on "House" the writers decided to 'shock' everyone by having their happy-go-lucky character Kutner abruptly commit suicide. The background story is now known, with Kal Penn taking off from his acting career for one in the government instead, and the writers decided to use his exit in a dramatic way. After the dust settles, the show went back to its roots in a lot of ways. More of Cameron and Chase from the first three seasons, plenty of Wilson and House playfulness, and even a clinic patient. It worked well as an episode, but it did make Kutner's death a little anti-climatic. C...

A Conversation With Aasif Mandvi From 'The Daily Show'

4/14/2009 10:22am EDT
Aasif Mandvi
It's one thing to be hired, right there, on the spot for a job. A strange combination of joy for getting the position and fear because, well, they want you to start right now. Now, imagine the same scenario but it involved going on television in front of a live studio audience and millions of people at home. This is what happened to current Daily Show correspondent Aasif Mandvi the day he auditioned for his job. Aasif discusses in depth his experience on The Daily Show and why he is such a supporter of Kal Penn's recent career change.

Mike: You were born in Bombay, now Mumbai, right?

An Unexpected Death Rocks 'House'

4/7/2009 10:11am EDT
Well, the self-proclaimed "most dramatic episode of House yet" is over, and the responses are rolling in from both sides of the spectrum. Some people are angry, some are confused, some are horrified, and some are heartbroken. Honestly, considering all the melodramatic ads, the fact this tragic death came out of nowhere, and the fact they clearly were just pushing it for a "message" or to shock the audience ... "House" may be guilty of sensationalism. It wouldn't be the first time, but it's a little sad that a good character had to be victimized for it.

Yes, there will be big spoilers i...

'House' Recap: 'Locked In'

4/1/2009 9:43am EDT
One of the ways that "House" becomes more than just your average procedural is how, occasionally, the writers and directors like to be more surreal and artistic. Occasionally it does not work, but on the most part these episodes are a wide success and praised. The car crash last season with Amber's death is an example, or the second season with House being shot. This week's episode "Locked In" is about perspective and how people make their own prisons, and it guest stars Mos Def as the patient of the week. It is also somewhat based off the excellent movie The Diving Bell and the Butterfly.
